CREATIVE WRITING AWARD

Two prizes of £1,000 (approximately $1,290) each and publication in Aesthetica will be given annually for a poem and a short story. The winners will also receive a consultation with literary agency Redhammer Management, a subscription to Granta, and books courtesy of Bloodaxe Books and Vintage Books. The winner in poetry will also receive a full membership to the Poetry Society in London. The editors will judge. Submit a poem of up to 40 lines with a £12 (approximately $15) entry fee or a short story of up to 2,000 words with an £18 (approximately $24) entry fee by August 31. Aspen Words

LITERARY PRIZE

A prize of $35,000 will be given annually for a book of fiction published in the current year that “illuminates a vital contemporary issue and demonstrates the transformative power of literature on thought and culture.” The winner will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the 2018 Aspen Words Summer Benefit in Aspen, Colorado, as a featured speaker and guest of honor. Novels, story collections, and translations of books of fiction published by a U.S. publisher in 2017 are eligible. Stephen L. Carter, Jessica Fullerton, Phil Klay, Alondra Nelson, and Akhil Sharma will judge. Publishers may submit the required entry form with a $30 entry fee by August 1, and five copies of a book (or bound galleys) by September 1. Baton Rouge Area Foundation

ERNEST J. GAINES AWARD FOR LITERARY EXCELLENCE

A prize of $10,000 is given annually to an emerging African American writer for a short story collection or novel published in the current year. The winner will also receive travel and lodging expenses to attend an awards ceremony in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2018. Anthony Grooms, Elizabeth Nunez, Francine Prose, and Patricia Towers will judge. Submit eight copies of a short story collection or a novel (or bound galleys) published in 2017 by August 15.
