When Mark is about to return stateside, he decides to adopt Cinnamon and sets up her transport back to the United States. But the unthinkable happens: Cinnamon is abandoned by the dog handler who was supposed to bring her home and disappears without a trace. Mark and his family start a desperate search for the puppy that lasts forty-four days and ends dramatically when Mark and Cinnamon are finally reunited. This is a touching memoir told by Mark's sister, who initiated the rescue efforts.

      This is the detailed account of a family's effort to get a friendly stray dog out of Afganistan and into the United States with the soldier who adopted it. The author is a relative of the soldier who adopted the dog while overseas. The joint effort to get the dog to the United States included not only the soldier but his wife, the author, several animal rescue organizations, and several fellow soldiers. The first attempt failed when the dog was abandoned enroute, then lost. Most of the book is about the effort and time needed to relocate the dog, rescue it, and then find a workable legal way to move it across several uncooperative countries. The determination of those involved in the effort is inspiring given the enormity of the task that unfolded.The book will give the reader a warm feeling about the willingness of volunteers to extend great effort for a worthy cause, in this case reuniting a dog with its owner.
