About this audiobook

"My love, speak to me. Tell me everything." Neferet went to Kalona, kneeling before him, stroking the soft, dark wings that unfurled loosely around the immortal.

"What would you have me say?" He didn't meet her eyes.

"Zoey lives." Neferet's voice was flat, cold, lifeless.

"She does."

"Then you owe me the subservience of your immortal soul." She started to walk away from him.

"Where are you going? What will happen next?"

"It is quite simple. I will ensure Zoey is drawn back to Oklahoma. There, on my own terms, I will complete the task you failed."

Exonerated by the Vampyre High Council and returned to her position of High Priestess at Tulsa's House of Night, Neferet has sworn vengeance on Zoey. Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Z. But Zoey has found sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgiach to take over for her there. Being Queen would be cool, wouldn't it? Why should she return to Tulsa? After losing her human consort, Heath, she will never be the same – and her relationship with her super-hot-warrior, Stark, may never be the same either…

And what about Stevie Rae and Rephaim? The Raven Mocker refuses to be used against Stevie Rae, but what choice does he have when no one in the entire world, including Zoey, would be okay with their relationship? Does he betray his father or his heart?

In the pulse-pounding 8th book in the bestselling House of Night series, how far will the bonds of friendship stretch and how strong are the ties that bind one girl's heart?

I really like the House of Night series, but I think that the plot is getting a little too predictable. In this book the focus was a little on everyone, which was nice. I found the characters to have very little development in this one- aside from Zoeys mom ( but we are a few books in). I am hoping that the next one tie up a few of the loose ends and maybe kill off someone evil instead of the good ones for a change.

This the eighth and most recent installment of the House of Night series. In this book, Neferet is exonerated by the Vampire High Council and she returns to her position of High Priestess at Tulsa's House of Night, Neferet has sorn vengeance on Zoey. Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Zoey. Meanwhile Zoeyhas found sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgiach to take over for her there. While her best friend Stevie Rae has her own issues with one the Raven Mockers, a son of the immortal Kalona. Stevie Rae has been imprinted with him for some time now, and eventually has to chose between his father and Stevie Rae. I loved the ending of this book, and of course it was left sort of open for the next book. Which I can't wait to read. I highly recommend this book and the series to anyone who is looking for something good to read (and if they like vampires).

The 8th installment of the House of Night brings the usual twists and turns you come to expect with this series. There is the epic battle between good and evil presented along with tales of love and heartache. This book continues the author’s trend of multiple narrations. Several characters, including Zoey, Neferet, Stevie Ray, Kalona and Rephaim, narrate this installment. I like this story telling device for this series, and find the change from Zoey’s narration to be interesting. Zoey and Stevie Ray have some quirks with their dialogue and pop culture references and it is nice to take a break from them now and then. This is the first book of the series that I have listened to in audio format. The reader does a good job with the dialects including Stevie Ray’s and Zoey’s. Her Irish dialect made me chuckle, but that could be in part from the character’s dialogue as well. The book starts out rather slow and it takes awhile for the action to kick in. Once you are past the halfway point, there are surprises and reveals to keep the story entertaining. The book ends with a bang and hints of things to come with the next book.Although I think this series has gone on way too long, and I am not as invested in vampire series as I once was, I still continue to pick up these books. I suppose it is because I have invested the time into the series and want to see it through to its conclusion. This installment is book 8 of 12 planned books. The first few are the best of the series, in my opinion. Recommended for fans of teen paranormal romance and vampire fans. The next installment in the series is called Destined and it is due out November 5, 2011.

While I was reading this book I couldn’t stop thinking about other things. I don’t know if I’m getting sick of this series or if this book just wasn’t as good as some of the others. It seemed to be very slow with not a lot happening. I didn’t get pulled in like I have before with these books and I didn’t find it at all interesting until the last few chapters. It did have it’s good moments, but like I said, they were near the end and by that point it was a little late. I almost gave up on this book. There were also some things that made me angry and I spent a lot of the time rolling my eyes at the characters. In the end, I will probably still buy the next book, Destined, and keep going with this series until the end. I just hope it gets better.

** spoiler alert ** Oh. Dread. I'll start out with the positives -Okay, I can only think of one. Such a great concept for a series of books. Bottom line - Zoey is a regular teenager girl who is going to high school when she is "Marked." This means that she will eventually turn into a vampyre. She's shunned by all and eventually reports to "The House of Night," a school for others who are beginning the change but not before she drives to see her grandmother, a Native American (Zoey is part) and experiences a spiritual experience with the goddess, Nyx, goddess of the moon. Zoey is destined to be a great leader.Zoey arrives at the school which is very big into practicing Wicca. The high priestess, Neferet is stunningly beautiful but seems to be evil. Yada, yada, she really is evil, Zoey steps up, Zoey and her friends develop powers and affinities for the elements, have weird experiences, etc. See? Fantastic content for young adult audience. Then it goes downhill. This book starts with Neferet having sex with some random warrior. He's not the one she wants so she kicks him out. But at least he's beautiful. She goes to the dungeon where she is keeping Kalona, an immortal, who used to be the Guardian of the goddess Nyx and who just failed to kill Zoey. Now he's a slave (including sex) to Neferet. Next scene: Zoey is on the island of Skye, recuperating from Book 7 with her guardian, Stark. They have sex in a grove and Zoey decides to stay on Skye forever. By the way, Stark is beautiful.Interruption: Mothers, Are you feeling how appropriate this book is for young adults? But, wait. There's more.Neferet has a debt to pay "darkness," the evil tendrils she commands to harm, maim or kill those she commands. She chooses to kill very sweet, very purple, very gay Jack, Damien's lover. And, oh, the stereotype is all over this one. Jack and Damien are completely about rainbows, puppy dogs, interior design, and painting their love for all the world to see. Did I mention these characters are sixteen?Neferet makes her appearance at the council and - Surprise! All the adults are just too darn stupid to realize Neferet is evil. Because, as a rule, grown-ups just don't get it and really are not people to trust.Meanwhile, our stereotypical southern, Stevie Rae is talkin' all southern for us and lamenting about her love, the Raven Mocker Rephaim. Rephaim is a great big bird, beak and all. But she loves him. It's important to point out how Rephaim was conceived. Kalona, his father, raped his mother and she died in childbirth. Special.Continuing with socially unacceptable sexual practices, Kalona, Rephaim's father, discovers that he has a connection to Stark, Zoey's sex toy. He can travel into Stark's mind. Interesting twist to the story except HE ONLY CHOOSES TO DO SO WHILE STARK IS HAVING SEX WITH ZOEY! EWWW! She's 17 years old! Now we're talking statutory rape/rape (Zoey did not give Kalona permission to enjoy sex with her via Stark's mind).Much to my better judgment, I did finish this book which gave me one more sexual anomaly. Neferet "gives herself completely" to the white bull. That's right, folks, beastiality.Let's go over that list one more time:1. Casual sex (even though they really LOVE each other)2. Homosexuality and stereotyping of gay boys.3. Rape4. Statutory rape5. Beastiality.Almost insignificant is the book jacket that, if I had seen the inside of it, would have been a good indicator. Turn it inside out and you get a full poster of a teenage boy, well defined muscles, low slung jeans looking morose. With four more books in the series to be written, I implore the authors to PLEASE develop a social conscience and 1) write better characters 2) stop insulting the reader with such garbage and stereotypes and 3) take writing workshops. I know P.C. Cast has earned prestigious awards but the characters lack depth, the story is not well developed, description of surroundings and action scenes lackluster or are absent, and the dialogue loses the genuineness by including the Scottish accent, Southern accent, and African American accent. Give the reader some credit in allowing us to create the accents in our heads. We know how to do that or sometimes we choose to concentrate more on content rather than worry about how something is said. 4) Stop grossing out the reader.

Good book, but several friends and I agree that it seemed like P.C. Cast was just dragging out the series and adding new, random boyfriends and antagonists. The plot was going in so many directions that it was hard to follow, but still good.

I understand (now) why some people like PC Cast and her writing. But I can't stand these books. I would gladly use them to heat my house in a jolly fire if I wasn't so against book burning. I wanted to flick the main character, Zoey, in the nose the entire time I was reading. I know the voice is meant to be that of a teenager, but she's trying to hard. Not to mention Zoey is a huge hypocrite who calls other girls basically sluts yet falls in love with three boys herself during the series. She's all "look at my tattoos, OMG cool!" the whole time. The only reason I gave it two stars is because deep down there is an interesting plot buried beneath all the layers of superficiality. If more time had been spent on that, instead of on omglikhowhawt all the menz are, I wouldn't have had such a problem.

Um, I am only reading these books for two reasons. One, because I can't stand not finishing something and two, I wanted to find out what happened between Stevie Rae and Rephaim. This book was okay. But I just keep thinking after this there are three more, and I just don't know how they can keep dragging it on.I also absolutely do not like Zoey switching between guys so much, and this whole thing where she can be with different guys just because of who she is and it's okay makes me a wee bit ill.And I have to admit I didn't read the book word for word...I skimmed some, and only read the points of view that interested me the most.I don't think I will read any more books because I felt like the story plot I was hooked to the most (Stevie Rae and the Raven Mocker) has been resolved.

FINALLY! PC and Kristen Cast redeemed themselves! I really liked the first 4 books in the series, but after book 4 the series gradually started to go downhill. The 5th book was "eh" and I was truly annoyed by the end of both books 6 and 7. The 2 prior books had me drawn into the story and kept me anticipating a really good ending that NEVER CAME! By that point I thought PC and Kristen were losing interest or dragging the books on too long, and they were ruining my opinion of the books. I kept thinking, “please be done already!” And, "can you PLEASE give me an ending?” Oh, and let’s not forget about all the guys Zoey kept selfishly stringing along. Ugh! Now I am back on board! You know why??? I loved this book! The first part of Awakened I really liked, then it started to drag (I was thinking “NO! NOT AGAIN!”) but about the middle of the book I was sucked in! At that point, I COULD NOT put it down. Put it this way, I stayed awake until 3am just so I could try to finish it. The ending to the book was A-MAZE-ING!!! There was a little bit of a cliffhanger, but it was THE perfect twist! It may be the best ending to the whole series! I know the plan is to extend the series for a few more books; as long as they keep this up, then I'm on board!

I seriously love this series and the latest did not disappoint. I'm loving and hating the cliffhanger at the end. I will say that I was surprised by a lot of the book, more surprised than I've been in a long time when it comes to a plotline.

This book was great in many ways and in some ways I feel Neferet's evil is being drawn out. I have a feeling the Casts won't get rid of Neferet until the last book. Which does have me still eager for the next story. I'm hoping for some resolve and a break for the fledglings. How much can they indure? Zoey has already shown she needs a break. I think what happened in the Otherworld was a precursor to how much the 'nerd herd' has suffered. And for some reason I want to shout at the adult Vampyre's for not listening to the children. They seem to have a big clue as to what is happening. For once I was happy to see Zoey wasn't attached to so many men, just one. It's nice for her to some what settle into a relationship instead of mass juggling. I rate this a four cup book as I'm sick of Neferet and the fact she isn't getting dealt with and banished.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEADWill the problems never end? The book starts with Zoey back from her time in the Otherwise, and she and Stark recovering from their assorted traumas. Zoey is not even certain she will return to Tulsa and face the ongoing problems with Neferet and Kalona. Meanwhile, Neferet slips deeper into her relationship with Darkness and Kalona continues to chafe at his place. Stevie Rae still cannot seem to tell anyone about Rephaim. It takes yet more heartbreak for Zoey to return and she quickly finds herself tangled in another part of Neferet's plot. But it seems the others at House of Night may be having their doubts. Lines continue to be drawn, loyalties questioned, and Neferet doing anything she has to in order to get what she wants.I do wish something more had been done in previous books with Zoey and her mom. She does reappear in this book, but not for long enough. I saw that another reviewer was disappointed with the pacing of the first half of the book. I didn't feel like that was the case at all. Nothing wrong with giving characters some time to recuperate.

For me, all of the books in this series are like episodes of a soap opera, or something you'd find on CW. Fluff that's fun while you're reading/watching it, but that you forget about the moment it's over. The story is dragging out much more than it needs to be, but whatever - I'm sure the authors are enjoying their paychecks. I'll keep reading them, but I don't spend any money on them.

I just finished reading Awakened, A House of Night Novel that follows fledgling High Priestess, Zoey Redbird, after her soul was shattered. Zoey must find the strength to return to her home in Tulsa with her Warrior and Consort, Stark to intervene in the evil lurking caused by Neferet and Kalona. It is my belief that P.C. and Kristin Cast carried out our expectations well in this latest novel, which keeps you hanging on for more. They use a witty writing style that captures the essence of youth and thus is appealing which enables them to get their point across to a wide variety of audiences. Generally, this book is written for young adults and teenagers. That being said, I’m in my thirties and continue to faithfully follow the series. I really love the idea behind the HON series. From the first book that I read, I was hooked. It’s my opinion that the book uses quite a few clichés repeatedly, which may actually be part of the draw to the series. For me, it actually became just a little too droning. It would be my recommendation to continue usage of these clever clichés, but to exercise a little repetition. Of course, this is only my opinion. The HON series is original and different, which makes them stand out. Even though Awakened was not my favorite of the series, I still had a hard time putting this book down once I got started. P.C. and Kristin are genius writers and mega superstars due to their successful imaginations. I “heart” them and the HON series!

Yes I know she is a fictional character bla bla, but I hate her that much, she just learned that her friend died who spent ages preparing a party for her, and what does she do? No not mourn for him, not go and do witchy prayer for him... NOOOOO she goes and screws her one-of-a-many bf... I used to like this series, but now, I can't stand it... I even shelved it to it's shelf...DIE ZOEY DIE!Zero Star if I only could!

Culminations on lots of things and some things begun. I just read the first eight books in order in about a week, and I'm ready for the next one. I like the direction things are going with Stevie Rae and Rephaim, I'm not so keen on the foreshadowing with Zoey/Stark. I am a bit curious about what role Erik will play, and I don't think we can count Kalona out any more than we can count Neferet out.

Just because a book targets a Young Adult audience doesn't justify it being poorly written. Especially when the books young readers imbibe can have such a lasting impact on their view of the world. Vampires, werewolves and supernatural creatures are hot right now. My daughter is asking to read them. I bought several YA books in this genre to preview before adding them to my bookshelf. This book will not be staying in my house. My expectations coming into this book were modest. I anticipated a kind of sex-sanitized Harlequin Romance with blood suckers and magical creatures. I enjoyed watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel with Daughter #1 in all of its badly-acted, campy awfulness because many episodes touched upon a social issue that was relevant to my kid. Read (or watch) what your kids are reading and all of a sudden that 30-year difference in your ages disappears and you are speaking the same language. In this book, however, the heroines/villains were all so shallow that I just wanted to smack them. The plot was thin. The writing bad. The whole thing reminded me of this Mary Sue book I co-wrote with a friend in the 9th grade in a loose-leaf notebook.I will keep reading ... searching for a suitable YA vampire series for my kid to read to sit besides the three 'Hunger Games' books and all our legacy Lord of the Rings and other fantasy books. This book, however, is going into the 'donate' bin as soon as I hit 'save' on this review. My YA daughter deserves more nourishing fare, and I will keep searching for it until I find that magical YA vampire/werewolf series that can bridge the gap and help us speak whatever middle-earth language young people speak these days

Awakened continues the story of Vampyre High Priestess Zoey Redbird and her friends' fight against Neferet, Kalona and Darkness. The action picks up a bit more in this than the last couple, but still does not showcase enough of the humor and friendships that made the first couple of books so great. Tragedy keeps striking, and victories are few, but it's obvious we're building towards an ultimate showdown. Recommended for fans of the series. If you haven't read these yet, start at the beginning. This is definitely not a stand alone.

Well this book was a bit different for me. The first couple in the series pulled me in. It was slow at times. I like Stark but I have no desire for Heath to come back even if it is just his soul. Zoey and Stark are back from the Otherworld, and Kalona owes Neferet because he did not keep Zoey in the Otherworld. Neferet returns to the House of Night and tries to convince everyone that she is what is best for the school. So it is a fight again between Neferet and Zoey. Neferet is counting on Kalona to help her, but he doesn’t like being told what to do by Neferet. Kalona’s son Rephiam is imprinted on Stevie Ray so he doesn’t intend to hurt her even if his father expects it. This book doesn’t move the story along much. I am really tired of the series books that turn into twice the number of books they should be. I am ready for this series to end. I am tired of the attempt to be cool with pop culture references and even more so the attempt to mix Vampire, Biblical and ancient Native American traditions and now we have added Fey to the mix. So another series that I will not be tempted to buy the next book and I will not be reading to the end. Perhaps someone will be smart enough to make Cliff’s Notes for the series, get rid of the filler stuff the author’s used just to sell more books and I will read it so I know how it ended.

Awakened is the 8th book in the House of Night series. Like all of the other books in this series this was a great book and i am waiting for Destined the 9th in November of this year. In this book Zoey and Stark are recovering on the Isle of Queen Sgiach. Where she is shown the old magik and falls in love with Stark. At the house of night in Tulsa, Jack and Damien is preparing for Zoey's return, the council is getting ready to meet as Nefret shows up. Aprodite and Daruis return to Tulsa. When there is a howling sound outside and everyone goes to see what it is and finds Jack dead ..... after awhile Zoey is called and she makes changes her mind to live where she is and come home to help her friends. Nefret "choose" to give Zoey the honor of lighting the funeral pyre for Jack and all hell breaks lose as normal ....

Ohhhh mixed emotions. For starters, I genuinely do enjoy the House of Night series for several reasons. The mythology that is woven in with the story is pretty cool. Not only does it make the series unique, but it also helps to clearly define the world that Cast's characters live in. It seems like the mythology and mysticism are the cornerstones of the HON foundation, and do a lot to drive the plot and characters in the books. That said, I think the biggest shortcoming of Awakened is that it looses touch with it's mythological foundation- or at least strays far enough from it that it messes up the feel of the book. The overall change in 'vibe' started in book 7 and continued on in Awakened. I feel that having Stark, Zoey, etc on the Isle of Skye was a bad idea. Mythological and mystical? Yes. BUT it didn't fit well with the elemental/Goddess/light/dark motif established in the first 6 books.I've read a lot of people gripe that this book was a bit of a placeholder and didn't do much to move the story forward. I disagree with that. There is the resolution of the Stevie Rae and Rephaim question as well as the solidification of Stark and Zoey's relationship. Stark and Zoey's dynamic will become even more important now that Kalona has figured out that he can get to Zoey by possessing her warrior. Oh, and lets not forget about Heath's reincarnation and Neferet's naked evil bull riding! There might not have been a lot of action per say, but a lot did happen to advance the story. As for my own personal gripe: TOO MANY DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW!!!! Normally, I like it when there are multiple narrators in a book. And by multiple I mean 2. Having twice that many drove me out of my mind. It seemed like the author wanted to make sure that we knew EVERYTHING that was going on and had to use multiple narrators to do it. I'm good with a little bit of mystery....especially if it means I don't have to feel like a schizophrenic having an episode."If its got tires or testicles it's going to give you trouble"

I am so happy to say that for me, Awakened is one of the best HoN books to date! I thought we were loosing it for a while there when things got way out of control and confusing, but they brought it all together beautifully.Awakened is all about forgiveness and redemption and love. And man did I cry like a baby. This will be a short review since I don't want to spoil the story, or even the back story since this is book #8, but it starts off with a bang and doesn't slow down. There's some really good and happy times. Stuff that makes you smile and see how much some of the character's love each other. But there is a lot of darkness in Awakened too. Lots of sadness and despair, but come on, it's Zoey! So it's still filled with horrible teen slang and the nerd herd, but oh well.If you've managed to stay on track with this series then you will not be disappointed in book #8. It answers ton of questions and stars the ball rolling on a new conflict, which hopefully will round out the series. Destined, book #9 will be out in November 2011 and I'm already putting it on my wish list. If you're still a fan of HoN, you will be blown away with what happens in Awakened.4/5 Stars
