About this audiobook

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved.

Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box," the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Riveting and relentlessly paced, THE BLACK BOX leads Harry Bosch, "one of the greats of crime fiction" (New York Daily News), into one of his most fraught and perilous cases.

Connelly's Harry Bosch series had been recommended to me for years, but it wasn't until I was hospitalized that someone gave me a paperback that I had a chance to enter the series. Highly recommended.

In his latest cold case, detective Harry Bosch investigates the murder of a Danish photojournalist killed during the 1992 LA riots. But his mission is soon threatened when political agendas arise, and Harry finds himself in a situation that might just end his career.

While the Harry Bosch books are enjoyable reads (for the most part) and the investigations are interesting (especially the cold cases), they have become formulaic with several repeated tropes such as Harry's lone-wolf approach to police work, his conflicts with the powers-that-be, and his terrible taste in women.

Nevertheless, the twists and turns of the investigation into Anneke Jespersen's murder are very compelling and the ultimate explanation is both original and believable. One of the best aspects of Connelly's books is that the villains always get their just reward and this one is no exception.

All in all, a solid addition to the series, but something needs to change soon to prevent complete stagnation for the character.

The murder was 20 years old but Harry was determined that he would speak for the young Danish reporter that died during the riots of 1992. The book was just okay as far as I was concerned. I really like Michael Connelly's books but this one just didn't do it for me.

Bosch is determined to get to the bottom of a 20 year old murder of a Danish journalist who happened to be in LA during the Rodney King riots.

The Black Box by Michael Connelly, a former crime reporter for the LA Times, is a fascinating look into the step-by-step process by which a detective puts a case together from little in the way of clues. Detective Harry Bosch, who has been featured in a number of other Connelly books, is on the cold case squad and has opened up a file containing a case he initially picked up during the Los Angeles Riots in 1992. He was the first detective on the scene initially, but the case got transferred down the line and never solved. A Danish reporter is found in an alley deep in the heart of South Central LA with a bullet in her eye. No eyewitnesses were found. No one knows how she got shot or why or whether, in the midst of the rioting and looting, there was even a why. Although his boss wants him to drop the dead-end case, Harry follows each and every piece of evidence he can find in the file, including calling anyone who knew Annika back in Denmark until he finally opens the "black box," his nickname for the solution to a case kind of like the black box in airplanes, and solves the case. The solution, which I am not going to give away here, is more unlikely than anything the reader could have initially imagined.

I enjoyed this case, which might seem at first, to be slow and plodding as Harry makes one dead-end telephone call after another, but it is fascinating and the story does pick up pace as it proceeds to a conclusion. Highly recommended police procedural story.

Unfortunately this was my least favorite of the Harry Bosch series. I will say the audio with the reader Michael McDonnohie was very blah and not as good as his other performers of the Bosch series, so was disappointed when I saw the narrator, but gave it a shot.

I like the reference with his daughter and her personality and his love of jazz music, and his tenacity, but again the reader was not exciting at all. As usual Bosch is involved in the unsolved cold cases from 1992 and now in present day he is focused on bringing in the killers---with its normal political bureaucracy.

I have read all the series, but sadly, this was my least favorite and did not live up to the standards of the older novels.

Harry Bosch at his best, in deep doo-doo with his quirky boss(es) and getting results. There's a little international flare, the victim is European, but this 20 year old unsolved murder is all California based. I listened with interest and completed it in a couple of days. Meanwhile, Harry tries to raise his daughter; I wonder if Harry will get another wife?

Harry keeps finding the wrong ant hills to kick over as his career slowly winds down as he works the cold cases. The case he works on this time goes back to the LA riots and now as he finds his suspects they have powerful juice. Harry is also working on his relationship with his daughter and he feels almost as he can never quite get it right and also doesn't seem to do everything right with his new girlfriend as well. A decent book but not one of my favorites.

I rarely read thrillers but when I do I want MIchael Connolly. He is the best. He has great stories, wonderful tight sparse language. the story flows. About every two years I need such a read and I always return to MIchael.

This is the 16th Michael Connelly book I've read, and I'm a big fan of Detective Harry Bosch.

While this book was good, I wasn't blown away. Of course, that probably happens after you read 16 books of ANY one author.

Harry Bosch is working a niggling cold-case from two decades past. As the story unfolds, we find him in hot water with his superiors once more, as he takes on the case as a personal mission. We are drawn through portions of the Iraq war, to Germany, to New York, and - finally - to the California/Rodney King judgment riots.

We follow along as he uncovers an unexpected, secondary crime, that involves several individuals - some of whom have become far more influential in the past two decades.

The Good: It's a Bosch book. And I can't get enough of those. When Connelly is passionate about something, it shows through in those sections of the book.

The Bad: Those sections seem too few and far between in this work, linked by moments and pages that just feel dashed off. I think that, perhaps, Mr. Connelly might have been be spread a bit too thin on deadlines (or some such thing) to give this work the time it needed to be something great.

The Overall: The plot line is unique for one of his works. Unfortunately, it's also a bit more transparent (to a degree) than of his others. It was a decent read, but nothing to rave about. I missed the craftsmanship in this work that I have come to know - and love - Connelly to be capable of.

this one felt all over the place. O'Fool. Shawn Stone. Anneke, the 1992 riots.I felt it needed to be longer to really tie these things all together. Especially the incredibly rushed ending. I love that as we're possibly nearing the end of the series and Bosch's tie on the Force, I'm glad he got resolution for one of his personal Open/Unsolveds.

It's the first Harry Bosch I've read, and I found it fast-paced and engrossing. The ending was a little far-fetched, as others say, but then I don't expect police procedurals to slog through only the dogged realism of the everyday. These are stories meant to entertain. I can't say whether it measures up to the early work, but as a new reader I enjoyed it. It's good enough to spur me to read more Connelly.

Enjoyable if not the best of the Bosch books. I like the introduction of the daughter. Though the end did get a bit "Jack Reacher".I have now read all the Bosch books so will have to wait for the next one :(

This Harry Bosch novel went down smooth. The development of his relationship with his 16 year old daughter showed a tender side of Harry, and continued displaying his bungling attempts at relationship building. The crime story is nasty and brings us to the 1992 rioting, burning streets of L.A., and to other very different settings. Bravo to Mr. Connelly for another terrific novel..... please let us know why Mendenhall followed Harry.

This was a slow read for me because I don't really read this genre. I was suprised how much I got into it once the story really got going. I never felt lost while reading and Mr. Connelly does an excellent job seemlessly weaving back details with the current story.

I think the plot went well, I started to get a niggling feeling about the bad guy and predicted it as it turned out but that was part of the fun of reading it.

I read this book for the Sony VIP program discussion with Michael Connelly and I am happy I did. It's good to get out of your comfort zone.

I listened to this book which I downloaded from my library's electronic media site.Harry Bosch is working in the Cold Case squad with a new supervisor who doesn't seem to know much about managing detectives. Harry is following up a twenty-year old mystery of a woman journalist from Sweden. Her body was found during the riots following the release of the police officers who beat Rodney King right in the middle of the riot area. Harry was actually one of the first police officers to examine the body and scene but he was only able to do a cursory job before he had to attend to another case. Her murder was never solved but now a piece of evidence has tied her murder to a more current case. Harry is determined to do a thorough job this time. His supervisor has other ideas and, of course, they clash.Harry isn't one to let an ornery supervisor or a complaint investigation stop him following the leads. This was a good book to listen to although sometimes I didn't want to turn it off when I needed to do something else.

Typical Connelly: unputdownable. Bosch is at his usual self, cranky, soft-hearted, a nuisance to the top brass. Closure is what it's all about for him. And he gets it, as usual. The plot gets rather conventional in the end and never really grips you thriller-like. But Bosch keeps you with him every step of the way, from steakhouse to Jazz CDs.

Started well, was very engaged with situation, characters, plot etc. But then it fizzled out for me and the ending was justtoo convenient, too pat This is only my 2nd Michael Connelly novel (the 1st being 'The Lincoln Lawyer') so I will try one or two other books by him before I decide what I think about him as a writer.

Wow this was a great book. Now I definitely need to read this whole series. I can't believe this story. Michael Connelly does a fantastic job on this book.Harry Bosch has another case that he needs to solve. This one is 20 years old and one that he didn't solve originally. Plus the weapon used in the murder is linked to other murders and that is how he goes about figuring out who murdered this reporter during the riots of 1992.Finding out who did it and why is surprising. When Harry tells the brother of the murder victim that the case has been solved was truly touching. Now I will be going back to the beginning.

A good solid book in the Harry Bosch series. Not quite got the excitement factor of some previous books, but a bit like putting on some old slippers, a nice comfortable way of putting your feet up and enjoying the well fleshed out characters.
