About this audiobook

Is IQ destiny? Not nearly as much as we think. This fascinating and persuasive program argues that our view of human intelligence is far too narrow, ignoring a crucial range of abilities that matter immensely in terms of how we do in life.

Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman shows the factors at work when people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do well. These factors add up to a different way of being smart -- one he terms "emotional intelligence." This includes self-awareness and impulse control, persistence, zeal and self-motivation, empathy and social deftness.

These are the qualities that mark people who excel in life, whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. Lack of emotional intelligence can sabotage the intellect and ruin careers. Perhaps the greatest toll is on children, for whom risks include depression, eating disorders, unwanted pregnancies, aggressiveness and crime.

But the news is hopeful. Emotional intelligence is not fixed at birth, and the author shows how its vital qualities can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. And because the emotional lessons a child learns actually sculpt the brain's circuitry, he provides guidance as to how parents and schools can best use this window of opportunity in childhood. The message of this eye-opening program is one we must take to heart: the true "bell curve" for a democracy must measure emotional intelligence.

This book surprised me by focusing on primarily educational discussions - or so it seemed to me. I was hoping for a bit more practical insights into day-to-day relationships. By no means a bad book, though.

I thought this book was good, but I only gave it three stars because I was disappointed due to my expectations. I thought I was going to learn how to become more emotionally intelligent, but it was more as a matter of fact about emotional intelligence. I guess I would say it's my fault. If you just want to know what EI is, this is the book for you.

Too theoretical to be honest. Lessons that can be applied to real life situations can be deduced from the theoretical concepts of this book, but it's not as straightforward. Would've been a lot more helpful if a couple of chapters at the very least were dedicated towards application (the how part) of these wonderful ideas in the real world.

A must read to all of us. The book shares a couple of facts and highlights to help us build our emotional intelligence.
There's a magnificent thing with adding fun to the learning process. So, I found the workshop a whole lot more understanding understanding than the book. Feels like people read the book, studied the concept and delivered that knowledge in a more fresh kind of way.

this is exactly what I believe we need, which is an understanding as a child growing up about how to deal with conflict resolution, and things of that nature.

The information is this book is enormous! I had to read the paper book couple of times and listened to the audio book couple of times to digest through all the new ideas and concepts. I agree and support quite a few suggestions that the author offers in here. Thank you, Dr Goleman!

O heard it up to the end, but I like audiobook better when it is not narrated by the author. I believe that Since they already know the book by heart they seam to speak faster what makes it harder to focus.
