About this audiobook
The childhood murder of Lydia Strong's mother has turned her into a woman obsessed with bringing brutal killers to justice. The reclusive, bestselling true-crime writer and investigative consultant has made a life out of chasing monsters. And her powerful intuitions rarely fail her.
When three adults—loners, drifters—go missing, no one seems to notice except for Lydia. Enlisting the help of her friend, former FBI agent Jeffrey Mark, Lydia starts an investigation of her own. But when someone raises the stakes and goes after Lydia—just as fifteen years ago when she put the FBI on the trail of her mother's killer—the real hunt begins.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lisa Unger's (then Miscione) debut novel is an enjoyable thriller, introducing Lydia Strong, the main character. Lydia, who survives the death of her mother at the hands of a serial killer, is now a part-time private detective and author... author of books about serial killers. Based in the Santa Fe area, this book involves the case of several missing individuals -- and only Lydia first sense the connection that leads to an eventual tracking and showdown of yet another serial killer. I'm a Lisa Unger fan, so even with some flaws, I found it a good read.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the first of this author's books and it was very entertaining and with the suspense leading to the discovery of who the killer was getting to almost killing him but laying in the hospital unconscious. The investigators were also fascinated by how she and her partner did their job. The falling in love was not what I expected but somehow, they were able to stop looking at their desire for each other. Actually did follow that blessing and the development of relationships out in the open. But I wonder why she wilted this long to follow her heart.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was a good read. Not my favorite book by Lisa Unger but good enough Ill read the next book in series. Lydia's aversion to love and happiness was a bit much as it constantly came up. It ends up serving her well at the end but hopefully she's more open in the second book. I don't want to give away anything with spoilers so I'll not go into detail. Lisa Unger has again given us a book to start a new series with interesting characters and mystery that will have you a bit baffled. Enjoy! Now off to book two.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lydia Strong is a true crime writer with an uncanny sense of when something is wrong - her intuitioon has never steered her wrong when investigating a case. In this story, she and Jeffrey Mark are in New Mexico investigating what she believes is a serial killer case. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I would read another of her books.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This first work by Lisa Unger (writing as Lisa Miscione) was okay, considering it was early in her career. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it or not, but aside from the overly descriptive wording in places (something common with new authors) and some jumping around with the plot, it was surprisingly readable. I had only discovered Lisa Unger recently, reading her most recent works, and so impressed with those books that I thought it made sense to go back to her first works. Would I recommend it? Sure, as long as you've already read (or heard, in this case) her most recent work - so that you realize this - 'Angel Fire' - isn't an example of all her books. In the end, I was captured enough by the storyline and characters to read to the end.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not a favorite, the story just wasn't compelling. I kept thinking it would get better but it just didn't compare to other writers I like.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lydia Strong was the person who came across her dead mother when she was a teenager. It made her who she is. She notices clues, links in the chain that don't make sense until the truth comes out. She's a true-crime writer and investigative consultant and with her friend former FBI agent Jeffrey Mark she is looking into the disappearance of three people, people that appear to have run away but Lydia can't shake a feeling that there's something else here. It's an interesting read, the characters are well fleshed out and complex. There were a few times that things didn't quite work for me but thery were few and far between. Overall it was an enjoyable read that kept me reading and wondering what was going on. The ending seemed a bit anti-climactic and things felt a little easy, but that's only a minor snag in the story.
