      Phew! I was a little disappointed in the last book, but fortunately this one lived up to my expectations. I think it’s the last in the series, and if I’m right then it’s a worthy send-off. [Sept. 2010]

      The subsequent books, while pleasant enough, have not lived up to my enjoyment of the first one. And I think I've figured out why. Book #1 featured a plucky protagonist who, against all odds, succeeded. And when I reach for a kid's fantasy book, that's sort of what I'm in the mood for. If I want Crime and Punishment or something by Nadine Gordimer, I'm old enough to opt for those ... but I didn't, I'm hoping for cosy/charming/pleasant/easy/gripping/delightful etc.

      Books 2 and 3 have the protagonist failing and losing and fighting and struggling and drifting and hiding ... he very rarely succeeds at anything, and it's ultimately depressing, even if he ultimately succeeds at the most important thing. Perhaps that makes this book weighty or important, and I'm just not in the mood to appreciate it, but I don't think so (I can think of other children's books that took a darker, sadder turn, and while I was surprised, I felt it worked). These books feel too slight to support importance--they want to be delightful fun page-turners, and they're not hewing to their paths!

      (Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).

      This is the third book in the Magic Thief series by Prineas. It was an excellent book in this series. The fourth book in this series, Magic Thief: Home, just came out last week. I was unable to find confirmation that there will be a fifth book in the series, but I did find a comment by Prineas saying she does have ideas for a 5th book. This is a wonderful fantasy read that is great for all ages.I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobooks for this series are incredibly well done. The narrator gets Conn’s voice spot on and does an excellent job with the other characters as well. We listened to this in the car on a road trip as a family and everyone really enjoyed it (my son is 7 years old).Conn has been exiled from Wellmet and his master Nevery isn’t pleased with him. Conn is determined to stay in the city of Wellmet and protect it from the evil magic that is coming. However, when things take a turn for the worse Conn is forced to leave Wellmet. On his adventures he discovers some truly astonishing secrets about magic and how it is tied to the cities.This was an excellent book in this series. There is a lot of magic, adventure, and humor. The characters all have great relationships (wonderful friendships and mentor/student) with each other and I really enjoyed that too. I love the positive messages, the humor, and the wonderfully unique magic. This book includes....DRAGONS...so awesome!Conn is such a plucky youth which such a positive outlook on things. Yet he started life as a thief and is struggling to prove himself as a wizard. He is always determined to do what it right despite what other people try to force him to do. He also always tells the truth, even if other people aren’t happy with that truth. He is funny and daring and just a wonderful character.We also spend a lot more time with Rowan and the new Lord of Twilight, Ember. Both are wonderful characters. I really enjoy Rowan as a character. She is a young woman with a huge responsibility being thrust on her. She’s a great role model, she knows how to deal with Conn’s independence and she is just a ton of fun to read about.This book does an excellent job of wrapping up the storyline involving evil magic invading Wellmet. The ending did feel a bit rushed, so I am happy to see there is another book coming out for this series. Overall this was another wonderful book in this series. I just can’t say enough good things about this series. These books are packed with magic, adventure, and excitement. The characters have healthy relationships, there is humor in here, and I love the characters and world. I can't wait to read Magic Thief: Home when it releases. This whole series is highly recommended to fantasy fans of all ages. It’s one of my favorite middle grade fantasy series ever.

      After barely escaping Desh, Connwaer (Conn) returned to Wellmet only to find that the situation there hadn't gotten any better. Knowing he needed to do certain things to defeat the Arhionvar (dark magic) and keep it from destroying them all. The need for certain materials and spells kept Conn and Nevery busy until the time came to cast the spells. Causing yet another explosion aroused the attention of the Dawn Palace guards as well as the minions that had been keeping an eye on Conn since his return. Following the magic to find yet another locus magicalicus (wizards magical stone) could open him up to more information than even he expected. Book 3 ..... Well, it took me awhile to get my hands on a copy of this book. I was concerned that I wouldn't remember what was going on in book 1 & 2, but this is not the case. Immediately remembered Conn, Rowan, Nevery, Benet and the situation around them all. The new additions to the character list were great and the reminders of what specifically happened in previous books helped me since it had been awhile, but might be redundant for anyone who gets the opportunity to read them straight through. Again it is a deceptively large book (only 358 pages) but the odd size, the larger print and the occasional letter or picture made the book read quickly. Really enjoyed the story till the end. I get some of the ending as unique, something unexpected and worked for me, but the very - very end was kind of bland. It did wrap up the series pretty good, but I would be willing to read another book by Sarah Prineas (like maybe her new Winterling series).

      Conn is in trouble, there are several factions in his city looking for him, not least of which is the Magic in the city. He is certain that he needs a locus magicalicus and he finds a spell to help him, which creates even more havoc and puts him under a death sentence. What the quest leads him to is unexpected and the end of the story almost passes too quickly. I'm not sure that the last chapter wasn't an added extra, it did complete the story and leave an opening for another. I enjoyed it, there were times where it lagged a bit but overall a good read. The book includes a knitting pattern for a scarf (also available free on Ravelry). It's an end of the story arc but there could be a return to the world and the setting.
