About this audiobook

Already the alpha pair of Denver's werewolf pack, Kitty and Ben now plan to tie the knot human-style by eloping to Las Vegas. Kitty is looking forward to sipping froufrou drinks by the pool and doing her popular radio show on live television, but her hotel is stocked with werewolf-hating bounty hunters.

Elsewhere on the Strip, an old-school magician might be wielding the real thing; the vampire community is harboring a dark secret; and the irresistible star of a suspicious animal act is determined to seduce Kitty. Sin City has never been so wild, and this werewolf has never had to fight harder to save not only her wedding but her very life.

How enjoyable to return to this series after I gave it a bit of break. Kitty and Ben' Vegas adventures are a little like I imagine that city to be -- over top, crowded, and all about show business, but I think it is the perfect setting for their wedding.

Not the best of the series. Each of the first four landed some serious punches to the reader, with resolutions that had long-lasting emotional consequences for Kitty. I didn't feel that in this one. I also didn't feel like the story really started until halfway into it. And I think the summary on the book jacket gave something away loooooong before the narrative brought it up.

Kitty-Lite?This book was enjoyable and I enjoyed the parts about Kitty and Ben and their impending marriage. I liked seeing Kitty's parents more and knowing that Kitty avoids the paranormal cliches of having had tragedy involving one or more of her parents. However, this book made almost too much use of them, while doing nothing to move the story forward. Ben too is gone through half the book. Its basically Kitty exploring Vegas and finding out about its 'seedy' underbelly. It was kind of disappointing in the fact that she can't do anything to permanently resolve the situations that she finds. The story was also shorter than normal and the huge climax happens while Kitty is mostly unconscious. Therefore, we the readers, learn about what happened secondhand. Also, there was this whole subplot involving Ben being kindnapped by a Vegas mob type that Ben narcs out for cheating at gambling. That situation ends with ABOSOLUTELY nothing resolved. Therefore it feels like just a plot device to get him out of the way so that Kitty can explore and interview alone. Still, it was Kitty and I love her. She was still recognizably her even though her 'wolf' was downplayed. I missed Cormac too! The must frusterating thing to me is, as I finished the book, I realized I had no idea what "Dead Man's Hand" is supposed to refer to. I dont' recall it coming up anywhere in the story.

Bah. I didn't like this nearly as much a the earlier ones. It felt as if there were too many different plot threads, and the ending just wasn't that satisfactory. And leaving something hanging to be resolved in the next book? BAH!

Fun times, Kitty can't go anywhere without something huge going down. Same strong heroine, same sharp wit, same fast pace, this series never gets old.

I love the Kitty Books, but this has to be my least favorite of her books. But if you combine it with her next book (Kitty raises Hell) you have two great books. I also miss Cormac. I hope we see more of him in the future. I would have also had a different title for this book. I'm not sure what Dead Man's Hand refers too. I'd also like to find out more about what happened to Ben when he was missing.

This is book 5 in the Kitty Norville series. It was definitely not a strong book in this series. The book really spent more time kind of setting up a new story. In this book Kitty and Ben decide to go to Las Vegas to get married. Only things start to get complicated. Kitty's boss talks her into doing a televised version of her radio show while she's in Vegas and Rick asks Kitty to deliver a note to the Master vampire of Las Vegas. Things begin to fall apart when Kitty finds out about the local Las Vegas pack and stumbles upon new types of magic and a secret that the local vampires have been keeping under wraps. This was an okay book in the series. I felt like Kitty spent a lot of time running around sticking her nose in where she shouldn't and in general not really accomplishing anything. It was a bit frustrating to watch Kitty not have a clue what she was doing. She even had trouble getting guests for her radio show. In general the pace of this book was a bit frantic and not in a griping and engaging sort of way. There is also a large shortage of action scenes; I think there is one action scene in the whole darn book...maybe two.None of the characters were really developed any further. A lot of main characters from the previous books are conspicuously absent for most of this book. Even Ben is only actually present for a very brief amount of time. Overall it seemed like the sole purpose of this book was to introduce some new characters and set up some big events for the next book; so let's hope the next book is better.Which leads me to the positive points of this book; it wasn't a total loss. Balthasar and Odysseus Grant are amazing characters. New and interesting magic elements move throughout the story. The book is a quick and still fun read. It is somewhat engaging. This is an okay book about Kitty; just don't get too excited about it. See it as a necessary read to continue on in the series and hope that the 6th book is awesome.

The previous books in the Kitty Norville series have been light, fun reads and "Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand" is no less. Kitty is a fun character and her story arc has followed a logical progression. I'm not left wondering "Huh?" when she takes a course of action. The storyline is easy to follow, the characters are interesting, the plot is light. A great poolside read.

Kitty and Ben decide to get married and decide that the easiest way to deal with all the stress is to elope to Las Vegas, figuring that would be work well and there wouldn't be trouble. Wrong. It all goes horribly wrong, there are bounty hunters; vampires, a were-cat pack, and a magician who isn't all he appears to be.It's interesting and I enjoyed the characters and their lives. It was quite pacy and kept me reading.

Unfortunately I had no Idea that this book was apart of a series when I picked it up. The book did a good job of explaining stuff that happend in previous books, so it was easy to follow. It was an easy read with an interesting story. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. I was reminded of the Anita Blake books, I don't know what series came first but if you like these books check out Anita Blake too(she gets pornographic toward the end of her series tho, fair warning.) The whole story line of vampires and lycanthropes being real and tring to out themselves and be apart of society catches me as an interesting way to look at everything. Like I said it was a good read and I'd recommend it.

I like this series. It has the perfect amount of werewolf personality to human control. Some series it too much wolf and not enough humanity, and others that are switched. Unfortunately, this book doesn't quite compare to the previous volumes. It seemed like it would have made a great short story, but doesn't work as a full length novel.

The premise: book five takes Kitty to Vegas, where she not only plans to elope with her mate Ben, but where she also gets to do a live version of her show on television. But the trip isn't anything like she expected: there's a gun convention at the hotel, and some of them know Ben from his bounty-hunting days and don't like Kitty one bit. There's a magician who seems to be the real deal, a Master vampire who's entirely unconcerned with his city, and then there's a suspicious animal show that seems to be made up entirely of lycanthropes, and worse yet, the ring leader has his eye on Kitty, and she's not entirely sure he's friendly. My RatingWorth the Cash: while I love this series, I have to admit it would've been difficult to follow up on Kitty and the Silver Bullet without seriously freaking the reader out. Book four had such an emotional resolution that I feel book five is starting a new phase, a new level, and this book feels mostly like set up. It's good, but it's not the best of the series at all, and it feels more like traditional UF than Vaughn's books usually do. That said, Vaughn's still one of the best, and I'm naturally looking forward to the next in the series, which comes out the end of February, because I really, really hope Vaughn doesn't pull back on the punches. I want more emotional grit, and I want the stakes to be raised. This book is fun, but for some reason, I was never worried about any of the characters, and I wanted to be.The full review, which includes spoilers and the cover commentary, may be found at my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. :)REVIEW: Carrie Vaughn's KITTY AND THE DEAD MAN'S HANDHappy Reading! :)

Kitty and Ben now engaged. Like all things in Kitty’s life… nothing goes as planned. They decide to elope and have a Las Vegas wedding. Ozzie, her boss, approaches Kitty about doing a live studio show while she’s there. It’s her chance to do a tv show on her terms this time. The trip turns into a working vacation. Her mother insists on being there for the ceremony. And guess what? The hotel just so happens to host a gun enthusiast convention at the same time which might not be so bad if some of those enthusiasts didn’t make their living as werewolf hunters. The lights, crowds and sounds set the wolf sides of Kitty and Ben on edge because it dulls their senses. Vaughn gets the setting on the Las Vegas strip completely right. I was in Las Vegas two years ago for a friend’s wedding and this book brought back some good memories. Even the details about the weather at various times of day are spot on.While Ben plays poker, Kitty meets the Las Vegas Master vampire and becomes intrigued by two acts she’d like to feature on her show. The first is magician Odysseus Grant who seems to use real magic in his act. The second is the trained animal act (lions, and tigers but no wolves, oh my!) of Balthasar, King of Beasts. Kitty wants to know if the were-felines are there against their wishes or not. Odysseus and Balthasar don’t get along either which makes Kitty curious about their history. This book felt like a long setup for Kitty Raises Hell so I’m glad these two books were published a month apart. There is a lot of action in this one and it’s possibly the sexually raciest of the series. Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand continues the theme of The Long Game which was introduced in Kitty and the Silver Bullet when Kitty learned more about vampire politics than she cared.

These books are not deep, they do not make you think about the bigger issues in the world, but they are great escapist entertainment. Kitty is getting married and all sorts of chaos ensues when she visits Las Vegas to do the deed. Lots of fun, I really hope the magician character shows up in later books, he was so mysterious, especially when you know what most of the characters are in their intro into the series: human, were, vamp...Love the magician.Always enjoyable, keep em coming!

To say that I love the Kitty books would probably be an understatement. First, you have a kick ass heroine, find out she's an English major, she has her own radio show, and she's a werewolf. How could you go wrong with that?Even though I toyed with the idea of Kitty and Cormac getting together, I knew it could never work. While he had a great understanding of her, there lives were too different. Further, she could never fit into his lifestyle of being a supernatural bounty hunter. When Ben was turned into a werewolf and Kitty's Wolf viewed him as her mate, I wasn't sure how to take it. However, after reading Kitty Takes a Holiday and Kitty and the Silver Bullet, Vaughn really won be over to the whole idea. While working as her lawyer, you could see a spark between the two that was just amplified once their Wolves made a decision. In the previous book, I felt Ben really stepped up to the plate and proved himself to be capable of being an alpha. However, it did feel strange him becoming one of the alphas for the Denver pack with so little werewolf experience under his belt. So, I was pretty excited when the couple decided to take the next step. After the Wolves decided they were mated and the two became the head of the Denver pack, the logical next step was to get hitched. And what better place than Las Vegas!Admittedly, this book was all over the place! But I felt that was Vaughn's intention with this book. Even though things seemed to settle down a little after the vampire/werewolf battle, it couldn't stay that way for long . . . Not with Kitty involved. And, of course, things are bound to get crazy when Ozzie wants Kitty to put on a live show in Vegas! My problem with the book is that so many things were happening at one time that it was hard to focus. However, I really do think that was a plot device. That being said, I wish there would have been more time spent with the weird troupe of lycanthropes. I imagine, however, that we might get a bit more in the next book, but I'm not sure. Honestly, a lot of the stuff Vaughn introduced in this book could easily be subject matter for later books. The whole weirdness with Dom and the vampires could be explored, Grant and his guardianship, etc.Even though this book was a little crazy, I really enjoyed it. Honestly, when I got married, I would have rather just gone to Vegas and screw everyone *sheepish grin* So it was nice to see Kitty do that ^_~Vaughn was able to have a really action packed book while still maintaining a level of humor that I expect from the Kitty books. My favorite conversation in the whole book: "A werewolf isn't supposed to have parents," Brenda said, grumbling. "They're not supposed to have mothers. How am I supposed to shoot you now, knowing it'll upset that really nice woman?" "You're not supposed to shoot me at all!" I glared "Sorry. Figure of speech." (179)All around, just a fun book! It was a quick read and never bored me.

I mostly enjoyed this next entry in Kitty's series. I wish Ben was a little less flat as a character, but part of me is glad to see a heroine who doesn't fall for someone who treats her badly. Something about the book felt a little flat, but I think it was actually well structured. I'm actually more excited about the way it set up the next book.

Even though they're mated as wolves already, Kitty and Ben are going to make it official the human way. Getting KNOB to pay for a trip to Vegas where she can sip fruity drinks by the pool and do a televised Midnight Hour is the perfect time to do it. Or so Kitty thinks. Staying in a hotel where the gun show consists of werewolf hunters isn't a very good start to the weekend that's supposed to be fun. But then she has to go and get the attention of a group of potential shapeshifters and a magician who may or may not be the real deal. Needless to say Kitty finds herself in all sorts of trouble before she and Ben manage to tie the knot. It's kind of hard to say much more about the plot of this one. To be honest I enjoy this series a lot but this story would have made a good anthology addition instead of a full novel. It's not that the story is bad—it's entertaining enough—it's just so transitional. It's more or less taking readers from Kitty and the Silver Bullet to the real storyline she wanted to do here... the one she sets up to be executed in Kitty Raises Hell. I still don't like Ben. He's really boring as a hero to me as a reader and he's even less interesting this time around. I get why Kitty like him and that's all that keeps me from hating him. In fact, it took me months to read this one because it was pretty dull between Ben and the slowly progressing plot. Unlike Kitty and the Silver Bullet this one has very little action. Should you bother? Well yeah, if you're a reader of the series and you want to be fully informed for the next in the series. I'm not 100% sure you could skip it completely. But on the same token maybe you can. This book leaves off in a sort of cliffhanger fashion that I imagine requires some recapping in the first chapter of the next book. I'll let my fellow readers be the judge.

I love Kitty. I want to be Kitty...er, without Kitty's problems anyway. If you don't know who Kitty is, then you haven't been reading Carrie Vaughn's series starring werewolf Kitty Norville; and shame on you! This series is hilarious, scary, exciting, and sexy all at the same time. In the four previous books, Kitty's been turned, exiled, outed, hunted, and mated. Now her life continues in book five, "Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand" where she 'tries' to get married. When all the brouhaha and decision involved in a big wedding get to be a bit too much, Kitty and Ben decide to get married in Vegas. Once her boss finds out, hey...how cool would it be to do a live show in Vegas? Yeah, that's about how Kitty's life goes. So instead of frou frou drinks by the pool, Kitty's looking at work, delivering a message to the Vegas Master Vampire, and (yes, only Kitty's life could be so screwed up) dodging the gun-show expo supernatural-haters who also happen to be booked in the same hotel! And I shouldn't forget to mention the magician who seems to be more than a showman and the animal act at one Vegas hotel that may actually star shapeshifters! But if you want to know more, you'll have to pick up your own copy...mine's already sitting on my keeper shelf. This series isn't really romance, and it isn't really urban fantasy, and it isn't really suspense, and it isn't really mystery. It's a bit of all of them rolled up in snarky dialogue and sharp plotting. I just wish Carrie Vaughn could write faster :)

A decent read, although admittedly there are certain aspects about Kitty that bug the hell out of me. Shes just a bit to submissive to be an alpha anything. As far as the story goes, this one dragged a bit. A few spots with some intrigue and action but few and far between. The story line of a vampire controlling a group of were's seems to remind me on one of the anita blake books, but at the moment I can't recall which one. It ends with what is supposed to be a cliff hanger. But honestly if you can't already guess that either the master vamp and/or her were pack are coming for revenge, there's something wrong. They never leave well enough alone (in any of the series out there).

Perfect for : Personal reading, anyone who likes vampire or werewolf storiesIn a nutshell: Book 5 of the Kitty Norville series finds Kitty and Ben the alphas of the Denver pack, and working together with Rick, who is now the Vampire Master of the city. It also finds the pair taking their relationship to the next level - marriage - in Vegas!! What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - right? Well, Kitty agrees to do the first real KNOB televised show from Vegas prior to her marriage. When she and Ben arrive at their hotel, they find that there is a gun show convention complete with silver bullet-toting hunters of the supernatural! Add to that a strange lycanthrope (were-animal) show where the performers try to dazzle Kitty for unknown reasons of their own. Supernatural trouble tends to gravitate toward Kitty, and Vegas is no exception - both Kitty and Ben run into trouble, and make new friends along the way. Another GREAT book in the series!Extended Review:Characters: The main characters remain the same: Kitty, Ben, Cormac and Rick. This book also sees the introduction of Dom, the vampire Master of Vegas, Balthasar, the lead of the lycanthrope pack, and Odysseus Grant, a talented magician with supernatural ties of his own.Story-Line: The story continues, shedding some light on Vegas as only a pair of were-wolves can. Kitty and Ben are there to get hitched, and everything seems to be working against them! They do manage to tie-the-knot, but not without the help of some new friends.Readability: A fun and easy read.Overall: Another great book by Carrie Vaughn, continuing the story of Kitty and Ben, which brings a new set of challenges, supernatural problems, and even a few new friends. I loved this book and highly recommend the series to anyone who is a fan of were-wolves, vampires and the supernatural. I also recommend this series to those who want to give this type of genre a try.

This entry in the Kitty-the-Werewolf saga just wasn't nearly as good as the previous books. Most of the story centered around her being nervous about an impending wedding which pretty much dumps the plots into chick-lit territory rather than urban fantasy. Granted, a couple of interesting new characters were introduced but it still wasn't enough to save the story. Carrie Vaughn seemed to have phoned this one it, so to speak. I hope the next book picks up with the action and grittiness of the earlier books.

It has been a little while since I read this book but here is what I recall...

I love the series!! Yummy romance involving paranormal elements. Plenty of steamy action and a touch of humor!

Definitely a series to get into! I started it and didn't stop until I reached the last book that was released! I am always looking for the next book!

If you like steamy supernatural romances this is a series to look into!!!!

This is not Vaughn's best work. The story seemed disjointed. I have no clue what the title refers to - what dead man? What hand? The secondary characters were not written well enough - I kept forgetting who they were, and I read this book within a 48 hour time span. I still don't buy that Ben is the right man for Kitty. Kitty falls (again) for a trap, knowing it's a trap. Come on, Carrie Vaughn, show us that Kitty is intelligent and thoughtful! I want Kitty to be an Alpha that is good, not a reactionary, self-centered one.

Maybe I am being mean but 2 1/2 and I'm rounding down because it might not even deserve that.

This was a disappointment for me altogether. After the last 4 books which were pretty good, this book puts many of the things that annoyed me about the other books in, and then goes and has no real point.

Ben and she decide to go to Vegas to get married in order to skip all the pomp. This is the story. While in Vegas they do stupid things that aren't very romantic or honeymoonish and get into trouble. They don't think, 'hey, maybe we should... move to a different hotel' when the gun show with werewolf hunting zealots are in town, or maybe, 'let's skip this and do it a different time. Or when the boss says, 'hey do a live TV show from Vegas while your there, she doesn't say, 'forget that I'm going to get dirty with my baby!' no... instead... they go and Ben finds other things to do, play poker, and Mom and Dad come along (this was actually OK in the end they get married with out them anyway) So they plan to get married in Vegas and then make plans to NOT spend time with one another. She ends up going around to get people on her show and get in trouble. The vampire master, who is a friend of Rick, says, 'hey call me if you need anything.' Then cannot do anything for her when she does. When Ben is kidnapped she goes crazy and searches for him at the Lyncanthrope show and gets nearly seduced (yea, she is getting married yet she is getting the hots for all the werecats) Where she escapes only by chance. Then she gets distracted by the vampire party and gets no information. Then she gets sucked into a stupid, stupid trap by the werecats and gets out of that by pure chance and help from again. All of this doesn't help her cause at all and Ben gets out of his trouble on his own. Something you would think anyway. Aggg!

The marriage is anticlimactic and the show she puts on not very interesting.

No, I didn't particularly like this one... but... I didn't hate it either. I just thought it was just a bit on the too stupid without any point. I would skip it and go directly to the next one. Knowing the werecats of the Vegas show are controlled by a old vampire goddess. She puts a curse on Kitty at the end of the book. She makes friends with a magician that is some sort of gate keeper to another realm. She makes friends with some of Ben's zealot friends and enemies of others, who get arrested for murder at the end of the book also. OK now don't bother reading it just go to the next one.

Kitty Norville is getting married, but she doesn’t anticipate all the responsibility that goes along with the wedding plans. Las Vegas! When her boss finds out she’s traveling to Vegas to get married, he suggests she throw in a little business while she’s there and do a live installment of her radio show. Las Vegas brings her more than just wedding troubles.I had committed to reading this Book 5 if the Kitty Norville series before I had completed the first four books. I had read Book 2 and had some background, but was worried I hadn’t read the others yet. It didn’t matter. Carrie Vaughn does an excellent job building on past books, but if you didn’t read them, you still won’t feel lost. Again, I enjoyed the character of Kitty Norville as Ms. Vaughn continues to present us with the trials Kitty must endure to be human and wolf in an intolerant society. In Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand, the characters are questionable until the end – the author kept me guessing. I didn’t find myself “on the edge of my seat” throughout this book, but I did enjoy the characters, the conflict, and the wondering. I give this book 4.5 stars only because I was able to put it down in between sittings.

I really wanted to join in on the tour and read this series, but started having regrets because I am probably the least likely person to read a book on a werewolf. I didn't even know what the word lycanthrope meant. I don't know the legends, and myths of the whole genre. Yep.. I am a newbie to the werewolf world. But guess what? I enjoyed the book! I read part of the first book in the series to kind of get in the groove of the series and of course due to reading deadlines, I had to jump into the last two books right away for this tour. Hey I liked it!I am going to read the whole series from beginning to end and review each one. I like Kitty, Ben and the whole werewolf thing. The Vegas setting is familiar to me. Fun books!!! I will continue to read on and enjoy. I also like that they aren't too too scary but just enough suspense for me.I like the fact that these are cuddle up and read in a night or two. I also like Kitty, she is honest, brave and very cool!

A quick job on TV how exciting as well as a Vegas wedding sounds easy and fun. Well not for Kitty and Ben, they get to meet the so called master for Vegas and a group of were cats in this one as well as a bunch of gun toting killers who are hunters of their kind. What a series of events, Kitty just can't stay out of trouble can she. Fun and interesting and making me want to read more about Kitty and her pack. I am really enjoying this series and can't wait to read more.
