    Great series, worth reading all.

Sentenced is the 5th book in the "A Booktown Mystery" series. I'm a mystery reader that enjoys being told a story that's not cumbersome to read and has a nice mix of mystery, humor and enjoyable characters. This book and series has all of them.

It is the Founder's Day weekend in Stoneham and a big celebration has been planned. As Deborah Black owner of The Home Domestic shop, is ready to begin the activities as soon as a private aircraft pulling a banner leaves the area. On it's last pass it's engine sputters and crashes into the gazebo where Deborah is standing, killing her. Since an aircraft is involved, the NTSB is in charge of the accident, and there main concern is what caused the plane to crash, not if it wasn't an accident. Then Deborah husband quickly sells The Home Domestic shop, lock stock and barrel to a company that is starting to invest in the Stoneham area. Tricia starts to ask question and finds the Deborah has a dark secret that point to her husband having planned this horrible event. Tricia soon discovers that some inventory is missing from the store and possibly it was someone else. Add to this turmoil, Tricia learns that Grant, a member of the sheriffs department will be retiring and possibly moving away. Tricia was hoping that they could be taking a friendship to the next level.

Stop by Stoneham and see what is happening with Tricia sister, Angelica, and the latest news from Ginny, Tricia's employee. And of course Mr Everett is around too.

3.5 starsOne of Tricia's friends and fellow bookstore owner, Deborah, is killed at the Founder's Day celebration when a plane comes crashing down. No one else sees it, but Tricia is suspicious Deborah was killed on purpose. In the meantime, Deborah's store is quickly sold by her husband and Tricia's best employee is asked to manage the store. And more nefarious things start to happen...I liked this. I listened to the audio and it managed to hold my attention (always a bit trickier via audio). It might have helped that I already know many of the characters from the previous four or five books in the series. I will be continuing this series, for sure.

Booktown is having its first ever Founder's Day celebration and it may end up being the last when a plane pulling a banner for the celebration crashes into the gazebo where Tricia Miles best friend is making a welcome speech. Horrified by what she has seen, Tricia has to come to terms with the death of her friend, but can't get past the circumstances and the results of how it and others are affecting the town.I had to work to remember what was going on in the town dynamics because it had been a while since I read the last book but eventually it all fell into place and was a good mystery.

The Founder’s Day celebration ends with a bang and crash when a plane dragging around a banner hits the platform where Deb is giving a speech. It does not end well for either of them, and thus starts the story and Tricia’s quest to determine the why and how of this seemingly preventable accident. It will be easy for readers to become so engrossed in the actions of Tricia and her sister Ange as they methodically work their way through the townsfolk, trying to decide if the crash was more than pure happenstance. High on their list is Deb’s husband, but with more digging, they come up with other suspects, too. For me, the mystery takes a back seat to the characters - they really are more interesting. Still, the entire package is quite good, as is the series.

This was by far the weakest book in the series, I particularly didn't care for the "murder weapon". I just found it too unbelievable. The writing is still good, but the main character's obvious unhappiness with her life, even after making one of her life's dreams opening the mystery bookshop successful even in a poor economy makes for a lees enjoyable read. Another thing missing from earlier books in the series is Trish doesn't seem to read anymore and talk about the bookshop and classic mystery authors is almost non existent.

I hope her next entry in the series is more of a return to the the early books which I liked much better.

I love the idea of "Booktown," and a whole bookstore devoted to mysteries! I'm still trying to warm up to the series, though. Tricia, the main character, seems especially nosy, and not in an intelligent, savvy way.

I truly enjoy my time spent in "Booktown". I like the characters and the development of the relationship between Tricia and Angelica is always interesting.

When the Founders Day picnic is just opening and Tricia's friend Deborah Black is getting ready to make a welcoming speech, tragedy happens. A small plane pulling a banner announcing the festivities crashes into the gazebo, instantly killing Deborah and the pilot.

Tricia (of course) can't believe it was an accident and sets out to find out why Deborah is dead, and who wanted her gone. Working with Angelica, and even Russ, Tricia manages to question almost everyone who had anything to do with Deborah over the last couple of years. There are some issues with neighboring shops, a "bit too happy" husband and a bitter mother.

The only problem I had with this book is that I thought Tricia was pushing a bit too hard. She went after the widower and the mother which seemed a bit at odds with her normal behavior toward people. Other than that I enjoyed the book a great deal.

I'll continue reading this series, I love the idea of a town full of bookstores, all very close together.

I like this series but this one is my least favorite. Trisha's friend is giving a speech in the town's gazebo and is killed when a plane buzzing the event crashes into the gazebo. Trisha discovers that Deborah's marriage was in trouble and believes her husband is guilty. Meanwhile Trisha is dealing with Ginnie, Ross, Angelica, Capt Smith and the rest of the town.

In Barrett's mystery novel, the entire town including Tricia's friend and event organizer, Deborah Black, has turned out for Stoneham's Founder's Day celebration. As Deborah gives the welcoming speech, an aircraft crashes into the stage, killing both Deborah and the pilot. Ruled an accident, Tricia is convinced there's more to the story than meets the eye and sets out determined to identify whodunit and why. Barrett has skillfully plotted and paced this story to keep the reader turning the pages. An excellent addition to the A Booktown Mystery series.

As a fan of the Booktown Mystery series I was so excited to pick up the latest book in the series. SENTENCED TO DEATH takes place several months after the horrifying murder of Jim Roth, the owner of History Repeats Itself. Life in Stoneham is settling back to normal, or at least Tricia is led to belief. However, she is thrown in the middle of another murder mystery, when her close friend, Deborah, is killed. I have raved and raved about how much I enjoy the Booktown Mysteries. Of all the contemporary cozy mysteries being published right now, it is my absolute favorite. The murder mystery aspect is always strong and well developed and the characters are always interesting and lively (well except for the murder victim!). In my opinion, SENTENCED TO DEATH, is the best of the five novels published in this series. Lorna Barrett is keeping things interesting in the small town of Stoneham. When Deborah is killed, Tricia is left to re-assess everything she thought she knew about her close friend, and other friends in the small town. The residents of Stoneham are constantly evolving. As with any small town (or any big town for that matter) nothing stays the same, and Lorna Barrett skillfully portrays this in the Booktown Mystery series. Relationships and friendships change and evolve, and all this happens skillfully in the background, while the murder mystery takes center stage. With the combination of the murder mystery, and all the happenings in and around Stoneham, I was absolutely riveted through SENTENCED TO DEATH. By the last page, I gave a contented sigh at having finished another great Lorna Barrett mystery, and a little sad as well. Sad because now I have to patiently wait for the next book in the series to be released. MURDER ON THE HALF SHELF is due for a release on July 3, 2012. I've said it before and I will say it again. If you haven't read this series, stop what you are doing right now, go to the bookstore, shop online, buy it for Kindle or Nook, do whatever it takes to read this series. It is the best of the contemporary cozy mysteries of 2011 and you won't be disappointed.

I love this series featuring small town New Hampshire mystery bookstore owner, Tricia Miles. It's set in Booktown, a small town with a whole bunch of bookstores. While I like the series, this was, by far, my least favorite book in the series.I continue to like the characters but, to me, the plot in this one was a mess. Murdering someone by crashing a plane into them while they're speaking at a large gathering of people? Really?I intend to continue with this series but sure hope that future installments are better than this one?

First Line: Founder's Day weekend. The entire town of Stoneham, New Hampshire, has been gearing up for the big Founder's Day celebration, but everything literally goes up in smoke when a freak accident kills one of Tricia Miles' friends right before her eyes. The Sheriff's Department chalks the entire thing up as an accident, but as Tricia learns bits and pieces of information, she starts thinking that there's a lot more to the story, and sets out to prove her point with potentially fatal results. This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series, and although I did enjoy this book, it is enjoyment with reservations. I found it to be less satisfying than the others in the Booktown series. The plot and the identity of the murderer felt a bit convoluted and over the top. The main character, Tricia, seems rudderless and looking for a change. Her ex-husband is making overtures, and she can't make up her mind between showing him the Welcome mat or a restraining order.I hope that Barrett is setting us up for something new and exciting in the next book in the series. I don't think I'm the only one who doesn't care for indecisive main characters.

Bookstore owner Tricia Miles is devastated when a close friend is killed in an accident. Well, the police say it was an accident, but Tricia isn’t convinced – the more she learns about her friend’s life the more she is convinced it was murder. While Tricia is investigating the murder, things are changing around her and she begins to wonder if it is time that she too makes some changes.“Sentenced to Death” is the well done fifth book in Lorna Barrett’s “Booktown Mystery” cozy mystery series – a series that gets better with every book. Barrett has created a wonderfully complex heroine in Tricia Miles – a character I at times sympathize with and at other times dislike. Tricia seems to be at a crossroads in her life and she is a very believable character – flawed yet a good friend to those she cares about. She is understandably upset by the death of her friend and it is nice that she does what she can to solve the case but at times she is blunt and not very tactful, even unlikable when questioning people she thinks may have had something to do with the death. Her relationship with her sister Angelica is also complex – it has grown throughout the series and I'm glad to see the two grow closer in each book. Tricia’s love life is a tangled one and it doesn’t look like it is going to be untangled soon. Barrett has created a wonderful setting in Stoneham, New Hampshire and the characters grow in each book. I’ve come to care for the characters and what happens to them, especially Ginny who seems to continue to have poor taste in boyfriends. The mystery aspects are well done and the murder weapon is certainly a unique one! The mystery has plenty of twists and turns and surprises and while there aren’t a lot of suspects, I still didn’t figure out who the killer was. Besides the murder mystery there is another mystery throughout the course of this series – who is the mysterious Nigela Ricita who is buying up so much of Stoneham? I have some ideas and can’t wait to find out if my suspicions are correct!“Sentenced to Death” is another well done cozy mystery by Lorna Barrett.

Although the plane crashing right into the gazebo seems like it's something right out of Desperate Housewives, Tricia's ability to ferret out inconsistencies powers to the forefront again. Stoneham has more than murder to worry about, as a multi-book side story, the Nigela Racita Associates conglomerate, is purchasing property in town again.

Many of the residents of Stoneham, NH (affectionately known as Booktown) are gathered in the town square to celebrate Founders' Day. Tricia Miles is watching Deborah Black's son Davey while her friend is making a speech. A small airplane is circling overhead towing a banner promoting the festival. Deborah is about to begin her speech when the plane hurtles downward and crashes in the middle of the square. Both the pilot and Deborah are killed, leaving behind his cash-strapped widow and Deborah's son and unpleasant husband. The deaths are presumed to be accidental, though Tricia suspects otherwise. Deborah and her husband had been having problems because he thought she was spending too much time and money on her shop The Happy Domestic, while pilot Monty Capshaw was also having financial troubles and had irreversible cancer.Tricia's assitant Ginny is trying to convince her boss to give her more responsibility, her ex-boyfriend the editor of the local newspaper wants her to give him another chance, her ex-husband is sending her jewelry, and she has her own budding relationship with Captain Grant Baker from the County Sheriff's Department.Meanwhile, Tricia is certain that the plane crash was no accident, and sets out to prove it in-between her other obligations. Her sister Angelica is able and willing, and with her help Tricia is able to do a little poking around.Tricia is an appealing heroine, and although her sister can be a bit grating neither Angelica nor any of the other supporting characters are one-dimensional.Booktown is based on the Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye and would be a fantastic idea here in the U.S., though perhaps not in this financial climate.
