About this audiobook
For years Elisabeth Hasselbeck couldn't pinpoint what was making her sick. She consulted doctors and nutritionists, but no one seemed to have any answers. It wasn't until she was close to starving in the Australian Outback, living off the land as a contestant on Survivor, that, ironically, her symptoms vanished. Returning home, she identified the food ingredient that made her ill-gluten, the binding element in barley, oats, wheat, and rye. By simply eliminating it from her diet, she was able to enjoy a completely normal, healthy life.
Hasselbeck also discovered the myriad benefits that anyone can enjoy from a gluten-free diet, from increased energy to improved attention span and quicker digestion.
In this all-inclusive book, Hasselbeck arms you with the tools you need to start living a gluten-free life-from defining gluten and targeting gluten-free food and beauty products to creating G-free shopping lists, sharing recipes, and managing G-free living with family and friends, whether at home or away.
Whatever your motivation for going G-free-whether you suffer from celiac disease, as Elisabeth does, or want to maintain a healthy lifestyle-The G-Free Diet is the key to reaching your goal!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a solid introduction to the reasons for gluten free eating. I always avoided this book due to the terrible cover. But it is a decent, real life story of discovering gluten related health issues. Readable, funny, and informative - Ms. Hasselbeck's story is one worth sharing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great book!! I learned alot about the many unsuspecting foods gluten in which gluten is hidden. The author shares alot of knowledge she's gained from research and personal experience.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I thought this was an excellent, first-hand account of Hasselbeck's personal journey into getting her celiac's disease diagnosed. Included in her personal journey are simple explanations into the disease, resources, food lists, and ready-to-eat products. Although I have been tested for and told that I do not have celiacs, there is a strong possibility that I do have food allergies. I can see that even without all the food triggers that Hasselbeck and other celiac sufferers have, I still could benefit from this simple way of eating.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Being a Celiac myself, I have read several books on this topic, but I have to say that I'm quite impressed with this one. I think more because Hasselback's title has such updated information and she focuses a lot on what you should do when you go out to eat. She takes a real-life approach to how a woman can handle being a Celiac, by offering advice in regards to how you discuss your dietary needs, or how you may choose not to discuss it. I also really appreciate Elisabeth's focus on "replacing, not eliminating." And what great focus on cross-contamination; I've realized this may very well be the problem that I've been having! Thanks to this title, I've discovered the root of a few problems that I've been having with my gluten-free diet!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Most likely you've seen Elisabeth Hasselbeck as one of the co hosts on the television show The View. She was also on the reality TV show Survivor. And that's where things clicked for her. For years she had suffered debilitating stomach, digestive and bowel problems. With only rice to eat on the show, she felt great. Coming back to 'civilization' and resuming eating bread, she finally made the connection. The G-Free Diet is an all encompassing handbook, for those with celiac disease, with gluten intolerance, for those who live with them and for those who want to 'clean up' their diet.Gluten intolerance/celiac disease has an astonishing amount of symptoms and is associated with a wide ranging number of conditions. Among them are osteoporosis, reproductive issues, malnutrition, autoimmune diseases such as fibromyalgia, and many many more.Elisabeth's book is subtitled a gluten free survival guide and it is just that. Covering everything from diagnosis, definitions, to living with this condition and many tips she has learned in her own journey.I was surprised to find that gluten is found in many health and beauty products such as shampoos and lip gloss. The G-Free Diet covers social aspects - dining out at restaurants, with friends and family and travelling. Did you know that IPhone has a gluten free restaurant application? What if you have a child with this condition? Keeping a gluten free kitchen, reading labels and shopping. There are fantastic resource lists included. Definitions of all the ways and places gluten can be found and listed. Lists of 'safe' foods, online resources and information and other books for further reading. After reading this I have a new respect for someone living with this condition. And I think I might just investigate some of the other grains listed that are gluten free. Many people are choosing to eat this way for an energy boost, weight loss and feeling healthier. Something to consider....
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Written in an easy-to-read style, this book no doubt will be a great help to many who have frequent stomach pains and other strange symptoms. It could be an inherited predisposition to certain foods, and trigger a condition known as Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. In addition, there's a link of gluten to autism.I've heard about the evils of gluten, but I've never investigated it. I was surprised to discover how pervasive it is in everyday food--even some vinegars!Included are recipes, along with tips on organizing a kitchen, shopping, parties, and restaurants. This will prove to be a handy reference tool.
