But this time is different. This time Marty sees a young beagle on the road past the old Shiloh school-house.

Marty feels sure the dog is being abused by his owner. When the dog runs away to Marty's house, his parents say he must bring him back. But it hurts Marty to return the runaway dog to his cruel master.

A great book about a boy and his love for a dog. Very suspenseful! This is a book I have in my classroom library that I often times recommend to students who have a love for dogs.

When Marty discovers an abused and underfed hunting dog on his rambles through the countryside, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, the dog belongs to Marty's neighbor, a hard, cruel man who isn't interested in giving the dog up. Moreover, Marty knows his family can't afford a pet; they can barely afford to keep food on their table. When Marty finds the dog again, he faces a moral dilemma: is it right to lie in order to save an animal's life? This Newbery winner has appealing subject matter, makes for interesting group discussion, and has a strong first-person narrative voice. Plus, the dog doesn't die! (I don't feel that that's a spoiler, as there are three more books in the series with the dog's name in the title.) It's not a new favorite of mine, but it's a solid choice on the part of that year's committee. I can see myself recommending this book to young animal lovers.

While wandering through the hills, Marty, an 11-year-old boy, comes across a dog which follows him home. He discovers that the dog, which he named Shiloh, belongs to a middle-aged man, Judd, who lacks all compassion for his dogs and sees them only as hunting aids. Marty attempts to hide the dog from everyone, including his family, but when Shiloh gets attacked by a neighbor's German Shepard, word spreads quickly. Judd, dispite being angry that his dog was being held without being notified, allowed the family to hold on to Shiloh until he healed. The family grew to love the dog, and Marty set out to put his foot down - he was not allowing Judd to take the dog back, for fear that the dog would be shot since he was no longer good for hunting, and for the deep love that he now possessed for it. He stumbled across Judd in the fields shooting and killing a deer during the off season which he then used for "blackmail", not realizing that Judd had a trick up his sleeve. Marty agreed to work for Judd in order to buy Shiloh from him, and in return he wouldn't report Judd to the game warden. Halfway through his work, Judd told Marty that the paper deal he made wouldn't stand a chance in court, and that he was working for nothing. Marty continued to work, nevermind the harsh conditions and smug remarks from Judd - he wanted to hold up his end of the deal. After Marty completed all of the work, Judd had a change of heart and allowed Marty to keep the dog without putting up a fight. I've read this book once as a child, but decided to read it again since I did not remember much about it. I'm glad a did. It is such a good book for young readers as there are many little lessons within. It touches on lying, ownership, responsibility, doing the right thing, standing up for beliefs, relationships, respect, and the importance of keeping one's word. It teaches children how to stand for something for which they feel passionately. And it is easily relateable as many children feel this same connection with pets.

This is the perfect book for any animal lover. The main character's devotion to a stray is something that is very important to share in a time when adoption areas and shelters are desperate to find happy homes for unwanted, unloved animals. Sharing this story with a younger reader will help encourage them to treat animals fairly and older readers will take from it the emotion that comes along with keeping a secret for all the right reasons. Is it right to tell a lie that saves an animal's life? Are there consequences?Well written and perfectly "spoken" by a country boy, this story will touch the heart of anyone who picks it up. It's almost a guarantee that you won't be able to put this book down. It easily deserves the Newbery Medal that it won.

I loved this story. I read it as a kid and thought the story was ok, but now that I read it again I really enjoyed it. I love Marty's attachment to Shiloh and his want to keep him safe. I really liked how well written the story was and it was really easy to read.

A realistic fiction book revolving around yet another dog. This is a difficult book to review, it's not that I did not like this book due to the language hell and dammit or the mention of drinking and tobacco. I think the mention of those are minor, it is the story itself. I am sure boys of young ages and dog lovers will be into this book, but my problem was reading one too many books revolving around dogs (and I am a dog lover but I just could not get into this one). I know in a few years if I re-read this book I may appreciate it more, but now not so much. Issues are brought up with right and wrong, lying, not doing the right thing or thinking you are doing the right thing, not telling people of what you are doing. ....

It was a great book. It showed the main character, Marty, having the courage to stand up for Shiliph and not let Judd Travers, his owner, hurt him. I liked the way that Marty's family helped him. In the end, Marty saved Shiloh from Judd and the book ended with a happy ending.

This is the story of an 11 yr old boy that falls in love with a beagle that belongs to someone else. Shiloh helps show that you shouldn't lie or judge people. Marty decides that the dog is being abused and hides the dog. He lies again and again to keep the dog. He knows that he is wrong but feels he's not as wrong as Judd. The story follows the consquences of lying and the journey of doing anything you had to for a friend. I think that Naylor did a great job with this story. She showed the thoughts and feelings of the characters well. I liked this book and would recommend it to teach consquences of lying and taking responsibility for your actions- good and bad

I loved reading the book, "Shiloh." The book is about a little boy who steals a dog because he is being beaten. The little boy hides the dog in the woods, in hope that no one will find him. When Marty's parents find out they force him to tell the truth. The story deals with a battle of helping someone and lien to someone. Does the other one make it right? Overall I feel as though this is a great book to implement in the classroom. It will help students to understand what is right and wrong.

This is a tenderhearted tale of a boy and his dog. There is something magical about the love that grows between Marty and Shiloh. It is also interesting that Marty faces some grown up dilemmas in deciding what is right and wrong, what is dangerous about lies, and what is honorable. The setting is unique but in a way that is just there, not full of explanations. You get a sense of the poverty of the area, but also of the hard-working ethic of Marty's family, and of others in the community. Wonderful book.

This is a book about an 11 year old boy named Marty discovered a beagle named Shiloh. It doesn't take long for Marty to fall in love with Shiloh especially after Shiloh follows him home one day. Marty figures that Shiloh is being mistreated by his owner and Marty wants to save Shiloh no matter what it takes. This is a sweet story. However, I was disappointed that Marty tries to justify telling lies and continues to tell more lies to cover up the first ones he told. I would not use this in my classroom because lying is wrong and this book is only making excuses for lying. There were other ways to handle the situation but the book never shows that Marty has any punishment for his lies and the reader could assume that it is teaching children that lying is okay if it is for a good reason.

I did NOT like this book very much. Though overall it's a pretty sweet story but there are so many stories like this. The main character, Marty LIES too much for me. Lying is wrong and he should have resisted the temptation regardless of whether or not he would lose his dog in the first place. Poor. I say don't waste your time reading this.

This dog followed him home and found out that he was his mean neighbors dog that lived on the other side of town. He absoultely loved this dog and began to grow feelings to keep him as his own. He finally gets his way and works for Judd to get his dog Shiloh. This book is addicting and one of the best books I have ever read. It is loving and sweet. One of my favorite books because it shows good character and is a real life situation.

I would suggest this book for ages 3-5. Shiloh is a very moving story about a young boy and his love for animals, especially a dog he names Shiloh that just happens to be his crude neighbor's hunting dog. Marty is very determined to keep Shiloh because he knows his neighbor mistreats the dog but is stuck between a rock and a hard place when making decisions of what is right and what is wrong. Will Marty give up his fight or will he follow through and make the dog his own so that he can love him forever?

I was reading another dead dog, but this was a charming little story of a boy who falls in love with an abused dog and uses determination and moral outrage to defy his family and the dog's owner. There are shades of grey to the action, and the descriptions of the family and the landscape bring the tale to life.

This is a story of an eleven year old boys devotion to a mistreated dog that really pulls at the heartstrings. The boy does everything he can to save the dog he has named Shiloh from his abusive owner while hiding the dog. The dog is badly injured by another dog and must have medical attention to save his life. The boys parents are then pulled into helping the boy and the dog, but insist they must tell the owner they have the dog. The boy ends up with the dog because he catches the dogs owner in the act of killing a doe out of season. The boy actually blackmails the dogs owner. The owner comes to see the strenght of the boys love for the dog and learns something about character from the boy. The boy does keep the runaway dog and he does blackmail the dogs owner, but it all seems like the right thing to do and the only way to save a defenseless dog.I could not put this book down. It was like going to a bullfight and cheering for the bull. Laws and rules are not always equal and just. This innocent dogs life was saved by the boy and Shiloh became a valued member of the family. This story has conflict for the boy because he knows not to lie and he knows he is lying but he carries this burden because he knows what will happen to the dog if he goes back to his owner.Good classroom extensions would be to show how one lie usually leads to another. It usually takes another lie to cover the first one and so on. It is also hard to carry that quilt. Another good extension might be discussing the devotion and responsibilty the boy felt for the dog.
