About this audiobook

An inspiring YA debut from the author of Dangerous Minds.

Eddie Corazon is angry. He's also very smart. But he's working pretty hard at being a juvenile delinquent. He blows off school, even though he's a secret reader. He hangs with his cousins, who will always back him up-when they aren't in jail.

Then along comes Lupe, who makes his blood race. She sees something in Eddie he doesn't even see in himself. A heart, and a mind, and something more: a poet. But in Eddie's world, it's a thin line between tragedy and glory. And what goes down is entirely in Eddie's hands.

Gripping, thought-provoking, and hopeful, Muchacho is a rare and inspiring story about one teen's determination to fight his circumstances and shape his own destiny.

This book was very good. Though it wasnt really challenging it was a book that no mattter your background or who you are if youve ever went to school and had a teacher that treated you like crap then you could easily relate.

Eduardo Corazon (Eddie) is a student at a mostly Hispanic alternative school. He is, by his own admission, an at-risk student, as are most others at the school. But he's made a promise to his mother that he'll graduate-- a regretted promise made because he had nothing else to give her late one night when he realized he'd forgotten it was his birthday. The novel is told in the first person from Eddie's point of view. To get a fine arts credit, Eddie enrolls in Ballroom Dance. Well, to be honest, he enrolled in the class only after seeing a show on TV where the girls were "so fine!" and noticed that the dudes got to actually touch the girls when they danced. So he was one of three guys in a class with 23 girls, which is how he meets his girlfriend. Author LouAnne Johnson tells an engaging story that will appeal to a majority of the students who claim that they don't read books. In other words, this is a fantastic recommendation for reluctant readers as well as ESL students from a Latin heritage. More importantly, it's an important recommendation for students who don't see others as equals. Perhaps my favorite sections in the novel are Eddie's musings about how Latinos are treated differently, and how white people might react if they were in the same situations. Johnson humanizes a very real and rather large part of our society through Eddie's wonderful narration. Highly recommended. This is shortlisted for the 2012 Missouri Gateway Readers Award, and I really hope this makes the final cut. There have been a great many less worthy candidates on the final list.
