About this audiobook

For the past thirty-five years, John Gottman’s research has been internationally recognized for its unprecedented ability to precisely measure interactive processes in couples and to predict the long-term success or failure of relationships. In this groundbreaking book, he presents a new approach to understanding and changing couples: a fundamental social skill called “emotional attunement,” which describes a couple’s ability to fully process and move on from negative emotional events, ultimately creating a stronger relationship.

Gottman draws from this longitudinal research and theory to show how emotional attunement can downregulate negative affect, help couples focus on positive traits and memories, and even help prevent domestic violence. He offers a detailed intervention devised to cultivate attunement, thereby helping couples connect, respect each other, and show affection. Emotional attunement is extended to tackle the subjects of flooding, the story we tell ourselves about our relationship, conflict, personality, changing relationships, and gender. Gottman also explains how to create emotional attunement when it is missing, to lay a foundation that will carry the relationship through difficult times.

Gottman encourages couples to cultivate attunement through awareness, tolerance, understanding, non-defensive listening, and empathy. These qualities, he argues, inspire confidence in couples, and the sense that despite the inevitable struggles, the relationship is enduring and resilient.

This audiobook, an essential follow-up to his 1999 The Marriage Clinic, offers therapists, students, and researchers a detailed intervention for working with couples, and offers couples a roadmap to a stronger future together.

This was my first Gottman book and I am so disappointed! I quit reading after the first three chapters discuss mathematical metrics of war, standard deviations, economic game theory, etc. I was looking to learn about the science of trust, not an overcomplicated metric analysis of historical game theory applications.

God this is so boring. I got through 2hrs before reading the other comment and skipping to chapter 4. It hasn't gotten any better. This book uses game theory, war theory, "insert noun" theory, etc. It's repetitive, impractical, and overly complicated. He has a ton of examples about the theories, which is useless since this book isn't about proving random theories...except that it what it is for some reason. If you hope to gain anything from this within the first 4 chapters, you'll be very disappointed. I'll update this if it gets any better.

I don't think that audio book is the best format to consume this content, as it seems to depend on visual items such as math, matrices, and charts that it would be very helpful to see as opposed to hear described. I do however think that the content was extremely helpful in relationship analysis, and that certain aspects if understood correctly could strengthen an existing relationship or help in establishing new ones. I do think that I will look for an e-book or physical book version as again, without the visuals it is hard to follow.

Truly, as the title states, the literal science (and mathematics) of trust. Read more like he was defending a dissertation than anything else. Research heavy, but less so in the interpretation of data and more so in the breakdown of his methods and rigor. Definitely not what I was expecting from Gottman content, which is usually so rich in narrative with a purposeful yet conversational tone.

In all honesty, it was entirely laborious to get through this. It was a one star for enjoyment and I’m not sure I took away too many practical applications as both a counsellor and as wife.

I only offered 3 stars because his work is so potent and powerful. Unless you’re looking to dissect his research, I’d say skip this one.
