About this audiobook

The series takes place in a world similar to our own but one where vampires, witches, werewolves and shape-shifters live among humans without their knowledge. These supernatural races make up a secret society known as the Night World, which enforces two fundamental laws to prevent discovery: 1) Never allow humans to gain knowledge of the Night World's existence and, 2) Never fall in love with one of them.

First he put her in a dungeon. Then he realized they were soulmates. Now he wants to make her a vampire princess. Maggie Neely is a short, spunky sixteen-year-old with auburn hair and an iron will. When her brother turns up missing, she's determined to find him. But she never suspects that the trail will lead her into the most secret heart of the Night World, a kingdom where no outsider has stepped in five hundred years.
The kingdom is ruled by the young vampire prince Delos…who keeps all humans as slaves. When Delos falls in love with Maggie, he frees her and demands that she join him in his life of dark pleasure. He's handsome, he's romantic - Maggie can hardly resist him. But did he kill Maggie's brother? And who are the strange people searching the kingdom for a Wild Power? Maggie won't give up until she learns the truth - even if it means destroying Delos and his secret land. If he doesn't destroy her first…

The eighth installment of L.J. Smith's Night World series, in which a secret world of vampires, witches and shape-shifters exists alongside the human one, Black Dawn follows the story of Maggie Neely, a feisty teenage girl who stumbles upon a hidden kingdom in the mountains of Washington state, and discovers that Delos Redfern - the vampire-prince who rules it - is her soulmate.Determined to locate her missing brother Miles, Maggie instead finds herself captured by slave traders, and bound for the Dark Kingdom. Between escaping with her blind companion Aradia, Maiden of all the Witches; discovering that she is the long-looked-for Deliverer, the prophesied liberator of the human slaves of this strange land; and meeting her true love Delos, who is not only the lord of Black Dawn, but one of the four Wild Powers who will either prevent or bring about the approaching apocalypse; Maggie has a lot to do...The second of Smith's Night World books to focus on the Wild Powers, Black Dawn continues the ongoing narrative about the approaching millennial apocalypse (this was published in late 1997), begun in Huntress. Unfortunately, with its divided narrative, unconvincing "romance" between Delos and Maggie, and a "lost kingdom" in the mountains that would strain even the most devoted reader's suspension of disbelief, this is not one of the stronger titles in the series. It's fast-paced, and my love of the series carried me through, but I probably wouldn't recommend it on its own merits. Then again, as the eighth in a series, who would be reading it on its own?

I came upon this book by chance and loved it the moment i started reading it. Its great for those who like some light reading. Smith does a great job -- she takes away the dreariness which normally accompanies such genres. The romance is subtle and surprisingly refreshing. Clearly written and minus excessive blood and gore.

This is the 8th book in the Night World series, and the second to deal with the millenium prophecies. The prophecies tell that without the help of four wild powers, who are all teenagers, on the side of good the human world will be plunged into destruction and chaos as the Night World takes over. This particular title deals with Maggie and Delos who are soulmates, Delos is a wild power a weapon for the millenium battle he can be used for good or evil. Maggie is a human girl who stumbles into a hidden Night World kingdom looking for her older brother Miles who has been kidnapped by one of the wicked witches. She must convince her soulmate Delos to choose to fight for good, and free the human slaves in the hidden enclave which has been a secret for hundereds of years. With me so far? This is a so so title in the series, it has some very good ideas and quirks that make it stand out. The idea of a hidden vampire kingdom remote from humans for a hundred years was cool and reminded me oddly of Brigadoon. I like Maggie and Delos both are well drawn characters but they don't have the same immediacy of other couples in the series like Jez and Morgead, or Quinn and Rashel. It's good to see L J Smith move away from her archetypes by deliberately making Maggie quite plain in comparison with previous heroines, so she seems more normal. The slavery idea and an introduction to more of Night World history was especially welcome as the books move away from the romance angle. In short it's a good stand alone book that only seems a little dull when compared to the rest of an exceptionally good series.

Maggie refuses to believe her brother is dead, so she follows Miles' girlfriend and is quickly drugged, kidnapped and transported to a lost kingdom of vampires calling themselves the Black Dawn. She manages to escape and meet her 'soulmate' whom she learns is Delos, the heir to the kingdom and also a Wild Power. Again, the plot development is rapid in these later-series books, and character development suffers. I don't buy Maggie's 'relationship' with Delos and her ability to influence him so quickly away from his entire upbringing. However, the series as a whole has been decent and I'll probably finish it out.
