About this audiobook

Includes a never-before-published Sookie Stackhouse story!

What could be scarier than the first day of school? How about a crash course in the paranormal from Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner, editors of Home Improvement: Undead Edition? Your worst school nightmares-taking that math test you never studied for, finding yourself naked in school assembly, not knowing which door to enter-will pale in comparison to these thirteen original stories that take academic anxiety to whole new realms.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris's story, "Playing Possum," Sookie Stackhouse brings enough birthday cupcakes for her nephew's entire class but finds she's one short when the angry ex-boyfriend of the school secretary shows up.

When her guardian, Kate Daniels, sends her undercover to a school for exceptional children, teenaged Julie learns an all-new definition of "exceptional," in New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews's "Magic Tests."

For those who like fangs with their forensics, New York Times bestselling author Nancy Holder offers "VSI," in which FBI agent Claire is tested as never before in a school for Vampire Scene Investigation.

And in New York Times bestselling author Thomas Sniegoski's "The Bad Hour," Remy Chandler and his dog Marlowe find evil unleashed in an obedience school.

You'll need more than an apple to stave off the creatures in these and nine other stories. Remember your first lesson: resistance is fruitless!

Includes stories by: ILONA ANDREWS, AMBER BENSON, RHYS BOWEN, MIKE CAREY, CHARLAINE HARRIS, DONALD HARSTAD, STEVE HOCKENSMITH, NANCY HOLDER, FAITH HUNTER, TONI L.P. KELNER, MARJORIE LIU, JONATHAN MABERRY, THOMAS SNIEGOSKI

WOW, What could be spookier with not one scarey story but several, and I only wished that several had a satisfying llllonnng ending! But each story just kept getting better and better that I can't decide which is BETTER!

Thought I would give this a try, knowing I'm not a big fan of vampires, aliens, zombies, etc. I managed to read all of two stories and parts of a couple others but it really isn't to my taste. People who love these kinds of stories will have a blast, I'll just send it back to the library for someone else to love.

Story by Rhys Bowen was my favorite.

I always pick up these compilations for the Sookie Stackhouse story. My OCD makes me read the other stories even though I don't really enjoy them. Usually they are by authors who have established series with their own fan base. I have never read one where it made me want to pick a new series. Fantasy isn't really my thing with the exception of Sookie and to be honest I am glad we are awaiting the final novel in the series because that plot has even grown thin. Anyway none of the other stories, all with a school theme, really stuck with me to even relate them. The Sookie story, unfortunately for Charlaine Harris, concerns a school shooting at her nephew Hunter's school. Talk about bad timing. The Newtown shooting had not happened when I first read this I found it disturbing even then since I work in an elementary school. Post Newtown the story is in really poor taste. I give this a pass.

Somewhat mixed bag of stories with a central theme of education. Described by Charlaine Harris as creepy school stories they vary from pure horror to light and some of them caught my attention a lot.The first story is by co-editor Chalaine Harris, it's a Stookie Stackhouse or Southern Vampire Mystery story, what starts out an ordinary visit to school to visit her god-son turns into a standoff with a crazed man looking for revenge. Small amount of supernatural involved but nothing too much. 3/5Spellcaster 2.0 by Jonathan Maberry - oh this one made me sit up and take notice. What if you took the spellbooks from history and collated them and made a master spell, as a research project in college? What if things started going wrong with the records? This one was an interesting read about consequences and seriously creeped me out in the end, but a good creeped out 4.5/5Academy Field by Donald Harstad is a story whose twist was vicious. Vampires and the effect they have on their victims and what lengths authorities will go to use those under their control to fight some of the evil. 4/5Sympathy for the Bones by Marjorie M Liu is a story about old style hexing and it's pretty twisted, the student bests her teacher in style. 4.5/5Low School by Rhys Bowen is about a girl finding herself at a new high school where it all goes wrong all the time. I guessed the twist in this one pretty early on. Not bad but outshone by others in this anthology. 3/5Amber Benson's Callie meet Happy is about Calliope Reaper-Jones taking a class and excelling at it, in all the wrong ways. 3.5/5Iphigenia in Aulis by Mike Carey is a zombie story with a difference. Melanie is one of the students at a school where they are all in cells and strapped into their chairs for classes. This one was interesting and scary and definitely different. 4.5/5Golden Delicious by Faith Hunter is about Rick LaFleur who is doing his best to control his beast, learn how to be a special investigator and hopefully not get killed. I like this story, well done, with interesting characters. 4/5Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews is all about finding a school and settling into it. Of course the school is not normal and nothing about Julie is ordinary. 3.75/5An Introduction to Jewish Myth and Mysticism by Steve Hockensmith and interesting story of a man who deals with his academic critic in an interesting way. 3/5VSI by Nancy Holder is about being trained to cope with Vampire crime scenes. 3/5The Bad Hour by Thomas E Sniegoski is Remy Chandler and his dog Marlowe and obeidence school with a difference. 3.5/5Pirate Dave and the Captain's Ghost by Toni L P Kelner is a story of a ghost with a grudge whose ways are reformed by a vampire and his mate. 3/5Overall it was interesting and introduced me to some authors I need to read more of.

I really liked some of the stories, like the one about the woman trapped at high school, the ex Angel turned PI and the two vampire ones. I was attracted to the anthology because it had a Sookie Stackhouse story, which was OK but I felt probably not one of her best ones. My favourite was the Amber Benson one, very imaginative. The rest of the stories were OK. I'll probably take a look at some of the authors I haven't come across before.

As expected, there were some stories I liked and some I thought about skipping. On the whole, though, it entertained. Favorites, in order of appearance: Sympathy for the Bones by Marjorie M. Liu, Iphigenia in Aulis by Mike Carey, and An Introduction to Jewish Myth and Mysticism by Steve Hockensmith.

    Review for Magic Tests

    Audiobook: Narrator – Angela Dawe

I’m not 100% sure Ms. Dawe is the narrator for this story as I listened to it in an anthology. Nevertheless, the narrator here did a wonderful job of not only Julie but the other students as well. I was more than pleased with her performance and would love to listen to more from her in the future.

This was a great story considering what we went through in Magic Slays. I loved seeing Julie becoming a mini Kate. Her thought processes were much the same but she also had her street smarts to fall back on as well. The introduction of a male character was very interesting and makes me curious as to what we may see in Julie’s future.

Overall, I enjoyed this collection better than "Home Improvement: Undead Edition". There were only a couple stories that I skipped; and they were the ones in which the author used traditional horror tropes and sparkled them up a lot.....sorry, but I am a traditionalist and that cutesy crap about were-folk with pet grindylows just gets my eyeballs a rollin'. Look, if you can't creep me out with your writing, don't try to amuse me instead; if I wanted to be amused I would have picked up a collection of P. G. Wodehouse Jeeves & Bertie stories.

It his hard to rate a collection of short stories. Most of the stories were surprisingly good, and only a few I disliked. I gave it a medium rating, but that is more a default rating for complilations.

I really like the themed collections that Harris and Kelner have been doing. For one thing they have lots of writers that I do read so dipping into familiar universes is great. The plus was a new to me writer that I will probably track down and read some more stuff and that is the point of this series of collections. Mostly familiar but always something new to trip over. So if urban fantasy is your thing this collection as a bit of everything along the spectrum of what people think is urban fantasy.

This review applies only to MAGIC TESTS by Ilona Andrews, which was really fun and short...but I won't complain about the shortness, because it was a very satisfying tidbit to tide me over until the next Kate novel. Yay!

I guess I had low expectations when it came to this book. I have no idea why although it was probably because of one of the contributing authors (her series has gotten more bizarre over the years) but I'm glad I read An Apple for the Creature because it was a joy to read.

The stories weren't particularly bone-chilling or terrifying but they made you tense and gave you a feeling of anticipation with every page turn. Even the cutesy stories like Pirate Dave and the Captain's Ghost. My favorites were Low School and Iphigenia in Aulis. The former is about a young girl harrowing day in a new high school and the latter describes a dystopian kind of world form a young girl's eyes.

This anthology was perfect to read near the end of October during Hurricane Sandy.

A surprisingly strong anthology, with great stories from some of my favorites (especially Ilona Andrews).

I only read Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews. Julie is the narrator. She investigates a missing student at a magical school. Julie is really good in this story. She starts off as the annoying teenager that she is at the beginning. Once she starts to investigate this missing student all by herself, she starts to act like a person instead of the whiny teenager. It was nice to see this side of her. It also shows her potential as an investigator. She will be an asset to Kate's PI firm when she's older. Right now, she just needs to go to school and grow up.

Hit and miss. It's had a great story from Ilona Andrews and one from Nancy Holder, The others did not WOW me.

The theme of this anthology is school, and all the stories revolve around teaching or take place in a school.Playing Possum by Charlaine HarrisThis story stars Sookie Stackhouse. I’ve never read a Sookie novel before, but this story was surprising easy to get into. Sookie and her nephew have to use their mind reading powers to stop a gunman determined to shoot up the elementary school. While this story is easy to read I found it a little boring.Spellcaster 2.0 by Jonathan MaberryAs a college project Trey and a group of his friends are making a database of all the spells in the world, with the idea of selling access to it to make money after school. Unfortunately for him, someone is trying to sabotage their work. Is it merely the work of another student or is something darker going on?I really liked this story, I think its one of the best stories in this collection. I’d never read anything by this author before but I’m intrigued enough to look him up.Academy Field Trip by Donald HarstadWhat if the FBI not only knew about Vampires, but had a special task force dedicated to the case? Claire is taking a class about information gathering, but is taken on a recruitment field trip to learn about vampires.I didn’t like this story at all. The story takes a long time to get going, and meanders around a lot. I did like the twist, but I’d seen it coming since midway through the story.Sympathy for the Bones by Marjorie M. LiuThis story is about a hoodoo witch apprentice trying to get free of her teacher’s control. But can dark powers really be turned to good? The writing in this is very visceral and dark. I really got sucked into this one. This is another author I want to read more of.Low School by Rhys BrownThis is the classic nightmare story of showing up for a test totally unprepared. Of not knowing where you classroom is, and showing up naked for class. There is a deeper story here, but I don’t want to spoil this one. The writing is tight, and the twist is fun.Callie meet Happy by Amber BensonIf you used to watch Buffy, Amber Benson played the part of Tara. I didn’t know that besides being an actress she is also a writer. This is a spinoff story from her Calliope Reaper-Jones series, about Callie the CEO of Death, Inc. In this story Callie is taking a remedial wormhole class so she doesn’t have to rely on her assistant to get around. Callie gets asked to demonstrate her wormhole summoning in front of the class things go wrong. She ends up in a different dimension and can’t figure out how to wormhole herself home. This story is ok, but again because its a spinoff story it helps if you know the characters.Iphigenia in Aulis by Mike CareyThis was my absolute favorite story in this collection. Melanie’s elementary school experience is interrupted by an attack of ‘Hungries,’ man eating zombies. But something is off about the school, and Melanie has to figure out what is wrong before the Hungries take over the school.Golden Delicious by Faith HunterAnother spinoff story, this one from Faith’s Skinwalker series. I had a really hard time understanding what was going in this story. There were a lot of characters dumped in all at once, and the situation isn’t clear at first. All the characters have a lot of background too.The storyline felt mushed in and too big for a short story.Magic Tests by Ilona AndrewsSet in Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniel’s world, this story is told from Julie’s, Kate’s ward, POV. Julie is sent to a boarding school to investigate the disappearance of one of the students. Julie is one of my favorite characters in this series, and I loved this story. Magic, dragons, dryads, and of course, school, all wrapped up in a fun story. An Introduction to Jewish Myth and Mysticism by Steve HockensmithI loved the twist of this story, because I never saw it coming. This story is about two college professors, and one of them sets about to teach the other a little something about relationships.VSI by Nancy HolderVSI stands for Vampire Scene Investigations, and is about two cops sent to a two week training course about how to spot vampire related crimes. But does the subject of vampires hit a little too close to home for one of the agents?Another fun story with tight writing and a nice twist. The Bad Hour by Thomas E. SniegoskiA simple class on dog training goes wrong when ‘The Bad Hour’ shows up. I loved that one of the main characters of this story was a dog. This seems to be another story set in an established universe, but the author does an excellent job of introducing the two characters.Pirate Dave and the Captain’s Ghost by Toni L. KelnerThis story comes in close second for my favorite story of the collection. Newly minted werewolf Joyce is attending a werewolf retreat to learn more about her new-found status in the supernatural world. But one of the attendees is more interested in finding out more about her, and won’t take no for an answer.Overall, this collection has a wealth of good stories and very few duds. I probably would have appreciated it more if I’d been familiar with more of the other authors in the collection, but overall I enjoyed it.
