About this audiobook

Physicist Portia Harding's life is grounded in facts. There's nothing that can't be explained by logic and science. Until she travels with her best friend to England-and accidentally summons an ethereal Virtue who bequeaths her gift of weather control to Portia . . .

Now Portia's walking around with a literal cloud over her head-and a heart-stoppingly handsome maniac trying to kidnap her. But Theondre North is no run-of-the-mill maniac. He's a nephilim-the son of a fallen angel-who needs Portia's help to change his fate. Problem is, Portia's down-to-earth attitude frustrates beings from both heavenly and hellish realms-and gets Theo turned into a vampire. But at least he has Portia to satisfy his newfound hungers-and possibly save his soul.

Author

Katie MacAlister

Despite her love for novels, Katie MacAlister didn’t think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. MacAlister resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes. More than thirty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and landed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell.

I picked this book up for a dime at a garage sale early this summer. I finally decided to give it a go. I waited graciously for midnight so I could start reading it for NOV Challenges. Wow, I was surprised. I really enjoyed the book but I was also into the science part of it. The idea of not asking questions when something weird happens just doesn't seem like a good idea. Anyway the book was well worth the dime!

I love this author's other books, but this one didn't enthrall me. It wasn't as funny, romantic or sexy as her other books. It felt rehashed, and the characters didn't have the usual redeeming features. The story skipped too fast, too - one minute the heroine's a total skeptic, the next she's just going with it, without any showing of her thought processes. It was blah. An ok read but not what I want really.

Picked this up for a side-project of mine that required some dubious romance writing as inspiration. It turned out to be more entertaining and less smutty that I'd expected -- not so good for the project, but great as a way to spend an afternoon! I wanted to smack the heroine quite a few times (how can a girl who claims she's all about the logic be so steadfastly airheaded?!), but the plot, politics, world and humour made it worth a read, and even worth a recommendation to a friend who'll be highly amused.

Better than most Katie MacAlilster books, in this book, the female characters are nto totally hateful. I did like the ideas in this book about 'Heaven' and hell and thought this book has better character development. Meybe there is hope for this author after all.
An enjoyable read that didn't have me tearing my hair out at the stupdity of it all, this one is worthy of a readers time. A great world to dip into

This is my first Katie McAlister book, though my best friend has been trying to get me to read her stuff for ages. As far as paranormal romances go, it wasn't bad. The basic storyline (about the otherworld of angels, graces, and nephilim) was really fascinating, and I'd love to see more stories set in (and focusing more on) this world. The main character was an interesting change from the usual romance heroine; she's a physicist, and it was fun to see a completely pragmatic, logical person struggle to deal with the completely unnatural things happening to her.The love story progressed way too quickly for my taste, but that's my usual complaint about romances. I like seeing a relationship develop; the whole love-at-first-sight, soul mates stuff makes me cringe. Some of the dialogue made me groan, too. The heroine says things like "good gravy!" and frankly, I've never heard anyone under the age of 60 use some of these phrases. Kinda cheesy, IMO.But this is a cute book, though it's not one I intend to read again.

The main character, Portia Harding, uses science as an excuse not to accept things that aren't normal and is quite argumentative. Actually she comes across as being quite like a lot of my scientist friends. She's not quite a sympathetic character and when she's given some magical powers and bumps into a quite hot vampire things are never going to be quite the same. It's the kind of book that works if you put your brain in park but has serious issues if you start thinking about things. As a light story it's good but it's definitely one I won't be hunting up to add to my collection.
