About this audiobook

A royal prince. An ordinary girl. An extraordinary royal wedding.

Once Upon a Prince, the first novel in the Royal Wedding series by best-selling author Rachel Hauck, treats you to a modern-day fairy tale.

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess — just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn't going according to plan. When her high-school sweetheart breaks up with her instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life.

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simons Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family's tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna's aid under the fabled Lover's Oak, he is blindsided by love.

Their lives are worlds apart. He's a royal prince. She's an ordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel's coronation.

It's the ultimate choice: his kingdom or her heart? God's will or their own?

A fun, light read with interesting spiritual discussion of how much should we let God guide our life and how much are we responsible for making our desires reality. Personally I think we are responsible to decide our course while asking for God's approval and guidance and then acting on the spiritual direction we receive. The message of the book is that when we trust Him, we end up with more blessings than we could plan for ourselves. I enjoyed that part of the book. The romance was too mushy for my taste sometimes. But that was the character. I also don't believe in "one true love" but that love is a verb, an action. This was balanced out by the part of the queen who learns to love the king. I think also that the prince could have been happy with Ginny if she had been a nice person (but she wasn't).

After the end of a twelve year engagement, Susanna Truitt's future has never been more uncertain. Nate Kenneth, heir to the throne of Brighton, has never had a more certain future. When a flat tire brings Nate and Susanna together under the fabled Lover's Oak of St. Simon's Island, a friendship forms that could progress into more if it weren't for Brighton law. Before Nate returns to Brighton, his royal status is revealed, but Susanna receives no further communication from him except an invitation to his coronation. Accepting the invitation, she travels to Brighton with her sister. While her external choices are publicly dissected, she finds her internal choices are muddled and confused by this blossoming, but impossible love. Has God brought Nate and Susanna together for a lesson in surrender that will later be told as a tale of unfulfilled love to their grandchildren or is there more for their future than either of them could have planned? Read more in Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck.Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck is the first novel in the Royal Wedding Series. The book's prominent theme of surrendering one's will and plans for the future to God even if it requires giving up a dream, a love or one's pride was an outstanding choice by the author. Most the characters were enjoyable, though I think the book would have benefited from Lady Genevieve's character having more depth. Her motives are foreshadowed in such a way that her admission later in the story seems surprisingly shallow and lacks the deviousness promised by the foreshadowing.Regarding the plot of Once Upon a Prince, I was disappointed. To me, the first half dragged and the second half borrowed heavily from The Princess Diaries movies. The storyline was a mesh of The Princess Diaries with Christianity and the American South. It sounds like an appealing combination, but too many of the scenes, relationships and situations were such close replicas to the movie, that I just couldn't enjoy it. Considering that Hauck has also written a book (which I haven't read) that is supposed to play off of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie, I think this lack of originality was actually intentional. Unfortunately for me, the positive aspects of Once Upon A Prince were overshadowed by the lack of originality. I've no doubt there will be readers that aren't bothered by the lack of originality and are just looking for a sweet read. However, for the aforementioned reasons, I recommend renting from the library before buying. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this ebook free from the publisher via Litfuse Publicity. I bought this book completely for its cover alone. I knew nothing about the author or the book. It was a very cute love story and I enjoyed it a lot. The beginning was a bit slow and the religious aspect was a bit much for me, but in no way detrimental to the book. The last third of the book read very quickly and enjoyable. I would recommend it to younger readers or those that enjoy a pure love story.

Who doesn't wish that they will someday find the prince of their heart? But falling in love with an actual prince might be a bit trickier, as this story shows. All in all a good story, giving a realistic solution to a potential problematic happily ever after.

I like the characters and the focus on falling in love with the person, not the passion and physical chemistry, as is the norm in Christian Romance. I did however not know that this book was Christian fiction when I started listening, so I must admit that the number of times God was mentioned became a bit of a pet peeve. Personally I don't believe in God influencing our lives on a personal level. Therefore I feel a bit frustrated when the characters look to God for answers and put their destinies completely in his hands, in stead of trying to find a solution on their own without divine help. This is not meant to offend anyone, just explain why I deducted points in my personal rating.

I watched the movie version of this book and thought it was cute, but typical Hallmark. When I began reading the book, I thought it would be a quick read, but predictable as well. And while the beginnings and endings matched, there was so much more richness and depth to the story. Rachel Hauck navigated worlds of politics, culture, and faith so convincingly that I had a difficult time ever putting the book down. I particularly loved the way the characters wrestled with God; it felt so much more real than most Christian fiction, so much like my own prayers. It was a balm to my soul to read this gem, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Rachel's books in the future.

This book reminded me of several teen movies, especially the "The Prince and Me". I doubt I will reread this one but I will probably read the others in the series.

There were lots of loose threads in the plot and sub-plots that seemed like they should go somewhere but never do; they end up feeling like filler.

This book felt like a mashup of many familiar fairy tales- even spin offs, like The Princess Diaries.

Despite that, it was an okay read. I enjoyed the Christian themes. The prince seemed very feminine to me. I've not known many men to be so love obsessed, and perhaps none at all that would be so vocal, sometimes even whiney, about it.

This got a middle of the line review because there was nothing that made it feel special or memorable to me, and though I don't regret reading it, I probably won't reread it.

Jilted! And from there the story of Susanna, flows and ebbs. Adam, who has been in Susanna's life forever has just returned from a tour of Afghanistan. This is the first day she sees him, though he has been home for three days. Instead of the proposal Susanna is expecting, he tells her he loves someone else.Rachel Hauck is a fantastic author and uses her unique voice and superb use of words to paint vivid images of the scenes around her characters while making the people realistic, though not perfect. Walking along a beach, I could almost feel the sand between my feet and smell the ocean while seeing the waves rolling in. A modern day fairy tale, Once Upon a Prince is a story that every girl dreams of, where a simple girl can truly win the love of prince. Faith when plans go awry, Trust that although God's plans are not my plans, things will turn out the way He has planned for me and I can feel His love as well. I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers for the purpose of reviewing it. A positive critique was not required, just an honest one. The opinions are my own.

If there's a girl that has never wished to be a princess or be loved by a handsome prince, I'd worry. Seriously worry about her. I don't think I've waited with as much anticipation for any other book than I did for this one. When it arrived, I pounced. And the family went hungry. But, praise God for fast food restaurants, right? ;)

Fully rounded and relatable characters made this book a great read. From Susanna (a planner who hates surprises) and Nate (a prince longing for personal freedom) to a mother and father who are as real as any could get, to a Queen who understands more than most would think, the great supporting cast makes the lead characters in this book even more lovable.

Nate is about to become King. In Georgia for a last holiday before a life of duty takes over, he meets--and falls for--local gal Susanna. Susanna has her own baggage she's carrying on her shoulders. Raw from a not-too-easy let down, she meets Nate and wonders if he can be someone special, or is he just her rebound guy? Can God do that? Pull the plug on a 12 year relationship and give her someone who is going to matter right away?

In a lighthearted, yet still deep manner, Ms. Hauck gives Christians questions to ask ourselves. Can God do this? Does God even care? What the heck am I supposed to be doing right now? Connecting with her readers on a personal, individual basis, we're forced to wonder "Am I willing to let go and allow God to lead in the way He wants me to go?"

She'll leave you with things to chew over, pray over, and ponder.
"She had to trust God, believing in the largeness, yet abandoning the outcome to him."

I loved this book. And I will be reading the next in the series.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fun and entertaining romance that manages to bury itself deep within the recesses of your romantic heart.

I read this book in 8 hours from cover to cover and lets just say I instantly fell in love with the characters. From the moment I started the book I fell in love with Susanna and Nathaniel or Nate. I love how this book was a modern take on a fairy tale. This is the sweetest story I have read it months and I was sad when it ended. I can't wait to read more books in this series because I loved this book so much. If you love sweet stories you will eat this one up.

    Once Upon a Prince
    Author Rachel Hauck
    Publisher Zondervan release May 7.13

I really was attracted to this book's published storyline and a totally fun cover. Unfortunately, it was more charade than fairy tale.

As much as I expect to like the leading lady of a story, I never came to any liking for Susanna. Unrealistic, lacking any depth of character or development, unbelievably immature for her stated age of 29; I couldn't imagine a 29 year old business woman acting, believing and speaking as she was portrayed. Her sister Avery was perfect for her age, but Susanna at 12 years her senior, didn't have as much wisdom or maturity as her sister.

Neither did she have characteristics that would have attracted any male of nobility, let alone be considered for the constraints, responsibilities and requirements of the role of Queen. When confronted with a barrage of photographers and reporters after a night out with Nathaniel, does she regard him with trust or honour his wisdom to NOT respond? No. Headstrong and determined she causes even more damage by feeding the 'jackals' as she blunders on. She offers herself to God for anywhere, anything, yet when the doors open she doesn't trust God to walk through or obey the action she's being called to.

It quickly became apparent this had moved far past fiction into the realm of fantasy. And not an enjoyable one at that. Everything was past the point of believability.

Wearing 4 inch heels to the airport, jumping onto an airport chair to address the papparazzi? Not likely. There was just nothing realistic that would keep me connected to or cheering for her. I repeatedly had to lay the book aside to take a break from the frustration. Including the far fetched ending. She couldn't even stop talking in the face of her "one love's" proposal!? Seriously, what guy would put up with that? Sadly, rather than a moment of redemption, one more reading disappointment.

Editing was confusing and/or non-existent in many parts. Nathaniel walks past a 'wall of white gowns' on his way into the Colors Coronation Ball. Next paragraph opens with Susanna being 'the only one' wearing white! Spelling, grammar, dialogue often seemed haphazard and unedited.

Overall, a sorry read I'm sorry to have to say.

I received this book to read and review in exchange for sharing my perspective.

A really sweet read to get lost in. Once the cover is open the words fly off the page, and make it hard to put it down. When the book opens Susanna Truitt's boyfriend for the past twelve years, tells her that he has found the right ring, and the right girl, but it is not her.Susanna should have been devastated, but she knew it was the right thing. He had become comfortable, like an old shoe. We spend time with her as she struggles with Garden Design business. She is good at what she does, and has a tell it like it is attitude. The last thing she needs is a new boyfriend, but a chance meeting with a cute guy Nate Kenneth, quickly changes that. They seem to have a lot in common, and that includes a great love of the Lord. When we find out that Nate is really in line to become King of Brighton, and blurts out to her that he can never marry her. UGH! Poor Suzz. Then his Father dies, and he must take the throne, and hopefully a wife. There is a conniving, lovely Lady Genevieve, who has the right lineage to become his wife and keep the kingdom. You have to like her, but Nate's Mother arranges for Suzz and her sister to come to the coronation. She is hoping when Nate sees her, he will realize that she is not for him. So what will Nate do when he sees her? Will he give up the throne to marry her? Will he do his kingly duty and help his country by marrying Ginny?Enjoy this wonderfully written fairy tale, I loved it!!I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

If you just want to relax, enjoy yourself and read about a modern day fairy-tale, then this book is the one to read. Doesn't every woman at one time or another wonder what it would be like to marry a prince and live in his kingdom forever?Crown Prince Nathaniel is taking a "holiday" to America on St. Simon's Island. He isn't looking for love, because like everything else in his life, the choice of a bride is out of his hands, it is a matter dictated by his royal position. Susanna Truitt has just been told by her boyfriend of 12 years that he has found the perfect ring, but not the right girl to put it on. Susanna is devastated, but at the same time realizes they both have changed and they both need to move on. But she isn't ready for any new relationships right away. When Susanna gets "rescued" by Prince Nathan she doesn't know he is a prince, just another vacationer on her St. Simon's Island. They quickly become friends and the more they "hang out" together, the more they realize how much they care for one another. Then Nathan's dad dies, Nathan must return home to become King. Susanna has a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that she was hanging out with a prince-soon-to-be-king! Time and distance does not change the way these two feel for each other, even though they both know Nathan cannot marry a "commoner". So when Susanna shows up for his coronation the media is not happy with this "friendship" and neither is his family. Can true love survive all this? Well let me just say that all fairy-tales have happy-ever-after endings, so you won't be disappointed with this ending. The lesson behind the story was all about surrendering one's will and plans for the future to God even if it requires giving up a dream. In the end He will work all things out for the good. As a side note, if you liked the movie "The Prince and Me" with Julia Stiles, then I am pretty sure you are going to like this story. There are many similarities. This complimentary copy was provided by Zondervan through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Paperback: 352 pagesPublisher: Zondervan (May 7, 2013)ISBN-10: 0310315476ISBN-13: 978-0310315476

I know that an ordinary girl meeting a prince and falling in love with him is far-fetched. However, Rachel Hauck actually took the fairy-tale stereotype and made it believable and refreshing. She was inspired by Will and Kate’s romance and marriage. The result is a great, clean romance about a recently dumped young woman, Susanna, and the kind stranger who comes to her rescue. Their romance progresses slowly but realistically, from kind stranger to friend to heart’s desire.

I was really impressed that the novel begins before Susanna is dumped and doesn’t skip over the emotional scene. Hauck doesn’t shy away from material a lot writers would consider difficult to get right.

I also enjoyed that the book is set on St. Simon’s Island, a real island on the Georgia coast. I wasn’t able to take a vacation this summer, but this was the next best thing. I was surprised to learn that Hauck doesn’t live on St. Simon’s, she really captured it.

Definitely a Rachel Hauck fan now. I'm planning to pre-order the next book in this series: "Princess Ever After."

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.Quick & Dirty: Modern fairy tale with a real prince. If you liked the movie The Prince and Me, you’ll love this.Opening Sentence: What did he say?The Review:When I had the opportunity to review Once Upon a Time by Rachel Hauck, I was excited. I’ve been looking for a sweet romance with a prince. I found it in this. It was simple and sweet, and perfect for the weekend. I felt the love and enjoyed the friendship.Susanna Truitt was in love. She was in love with a man that has served her country for many years. They began as friends and became more. After twelve years, Susanna was ready to settle down and have her own family. Unfortunately, her boyfriend didn’t feel the same way. He met someone else and ended Susanna’s happy ever after. Her career wasn’t progressing, like the rest of her life, and returns to work for the family restaurant. Prince Nathaniel is on holiday in St. Simon’s Island. He is escaping the pressures of his life, and his future, before the inevitable happens. As the king’s health decreases, his ascension to the throne is counted in days. What he doesn’t expect is a friendship that turns into something more. Susanna and Nathaniel’s lives are worlds apart, and could never work out, especially because of who they are. Will they say goodbye forever or have their own happy ever after?Susanna is someone that was easy to get to know. She is every woman, looking for love but just not in the right places. Hauck wrote her well and realistically. She had her own faults and flaws that she accepted, as well as unrealistic dreams. I related to her because I was in that place one time or another. It was easy to put myself in her shoes, and for me, that’s always a quality that I like to see in books. I took Susanna as a woman with much vulnerability, but as the story progressed, Hauck showed me her tenacity and drive. She transformed into someone stronger, someone independent, and someone that I would want to be.Nathaniel is a prince; a real prince (at least as far as the story goes). Who doesn’t love stories about princes? Nathaniel had an accent, he was dashing, and he was someone that most girls would love to swoon about. He had manners and charm that most of us readers don’t experience first-hand. And with Nathaniel, Hauck gave us our prince. I admired how much he valued family and duty, honoring and respecting his culture and his country’s ways. He was a good character to get to know, one that I’d like to know more of.Hauck’s world was one out of a fairytale. For those of you movie aficionados, Once Upon a Prince has similar hints to My Prince and Me. They both have comparable details towards the story and the setting, but I feel Once Upon a Prince has something more. As a book, I always get more out of a story versus a media representation. The place that she chose, St. Simon’s Island, was quaint and had that home-town feel. It played this role that added to the intimacy between Susanna and Nathaniel. It was a small island, allowing for the friendship to blossom into a romance. It was easy for me to get lost within the pages of Once Upon a Prince. Hauck paced the events well, and it allowed me to concentrate on the story itself. There wasn’t a love triangle, and not much angst. There are some elements that were predictable. But if I’m going to be honest, I read Once Upon a Prince to experience a feeling. I read Once Upon a Prince to feel the love that Hauck wrote about.Notable Scene:With the car raised, Nathaniel removed the lug nuts and then worked the flat tire from the axle. “My mates and I used to let off steam in our university years racing cars down country roads.” He let a memory rise in his soul and do the talking. “One of us always flattened a tire. But it was good to have a go at it with my mates.”“Sounds like you miss it.” She peered at him through the golden wisps of her hair that had been freed from her ponytail.“It was a different time. We were young and impetuous, thought we were invincible.”“And now?”“I’m respectable and not so impetuous nor invincible.”“Is that bad?” She tugged the spare out of the trunk and dropped it next to Nathaniel.”“At the moment, not at all.” He paused. “Not at all.” For a sweet Southern moment, he let the light and life of Miss Susanna Truitt sink into the most secret place of his heart.FTC Advisory: Zondervan provided me with a copy of Once Upon a Prince. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Are you in the mood for a good fairy tale? Then pick up Rachel Hauck’s novel, Once Upon A Prince. This sweet love story, with a touch of Southern sass is perfect for the beach or anywhere you want to relax with a good book and a glass of sweet tea.Susanna has been hanging onto a 12 year relationship with her high school sweetheart — until she is told he has the right ring, but the wrong girl! Faced with the whole of Saint Simons Island knowing her business and a flat tire, a literal Prince Charming comes to her aid. But love is not so smooth when faced with the demands of running a kingdom, a scheming wannabe Queen, and the fear of losing control. Susanna gives everything to God in her search of His plan for her life.Being from Georgia, I loved the setting of this book. The ebb and flow of island life shines through — I kept wanting to walk on the beach and get some barbecue! And Hauck does a great job in creating the fictional country of Brighton Kingdom. Susanna is a heroine to love, and Nate Kenneth aka Prince Nathaniel is truly a Prince Charming. The fairy godmother in this story is a wacky homeless woman who may have an inside track into God’s timing and plans for the couple. If you love a happily ever after tale, some humor along with your romance or a sweet story that includes God’s love in the mix, then pick up Once Upon A Prince.Recommended.(Thanks to LitFuse for my copy of this book. Prince Nathaniel comes to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia for a holiday. His father is sick which means he’ll be taking over as King of Brighton sooner than expected. The last thing he’s looking for on this holiday is love but then Susanna Truitt enters his life in a most unexpected way. Susanna is a planner and likes everything laid out nice and neat. So when her boyfriend of 12 years breaks it off, she’s understandably hurt and angry. She ends up being hassled by a vagrant and the Prince comes to her rescue. She doesn’t know he’s a prince. Her spit and fire attracts him but he also sees an honest, compassionate woman. She is drawn to Nathaniel because of his kindness and integrity. But what will happen when she finds out he’s really a prince? And how can they have a future together if the Brighton law requires him to marry someone else? This was a fun modern day fairy tale and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I loved getting to know Susanna and Nathaniel. Both were interesting, loveable characters loaded with personality! I also loved the setting of St. Simon’s Island. I have family that live in Brunswick so the area was familiar to me which made it even better. The story moved along at a steady pace, although a few parts got a little tied up with the political background of Brighton, but other than that you want to keep reading to find out how it all turns out. The message of totally turning everything over, including yourself, to the Lord was very well done. It’s something that’s easier said than done, especially for someone like Susanna. But, God’s way and timing are always best. The ending was great although I did have a few questions I would have liked answered. However, this is the first in a series so I’m guessing those may be bought out in the next installment, which I'm looking forward to. If you're looking for a fun, take-me-away type story then I recommend Once Upon a Prince.
