About this audiobook

In this stand-alone companion to the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone series comes the story of Mik and Zuzana's fantastical first date--as a gorgeously illustrated gift edition with bonus content included.
Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her "rabid fairy," her "voodoo eyes" are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or "Violin Boy," her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to make the first move, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It's a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter's night before leading him to the treasure: herself! Violin Boy is not going to know what hit him.
New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy--the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Originally published as an ebook, this new print edition will include breathtaking black and white illustrations, plus bonus content in a gorgeous package perfect for new and current fans of the series.

Night of Cake and Puppets is a beautiful companion story to the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, telling the story of how Zuzana and Mik got together that was only alluded to in the main series. If you're unfamiliar with Taylor's work, it's probably not the best place to start. While a lot of the story can be enjoyed in isolation, there are a lot of nods to the main series such as Karou's quest and the system of using wishes that will not really make sense to a newcomer. However, for a fan, the novel is certainly a must by. The hardback edition is simply stunning. The cover beneath the dustjacket is brightly coloured and illustrated with a drawing of the two protagonists and the book is filled with Zuzana's gorgeous pencil sketches (drawn by Jim di Bartolo, who also illustrated the graphic novel). In addition to the novella, it also contains extra pages of artwork and excerpts from both the novel and graphic novel, making it a wonderful collector's item. The story itself is short and sweet, carrying Taylor's whimsical charm. While it lacks the world-building of the main series, it does present a lovely romantic tale from the first person perspective of the protagonists. The story is self-contained and brings a sense of magic to the streets of Prague, as Mik follows a series of puppet-related clues on a treasure hunt that will lead him to the puppet maker - a girl who he has long admired from afar. The story has the feel of a faerie tale and I was more than a little disappointed that it was over so quickly. The characters of Zuzana and Mik are two of my favourites in the main series and this book really gave them a chance to shy. Both of them had very different voices, with Zuzana's fiery eccentricity forming a nice counterpoint to Mik's calm. While there are some brief cameos from other characters, they don't really have much impact on the story. This is Zuzana and Mik's tale, and it is magical. All in all, I don't have much to say about this one. While I wouldn't recommend this novella to people who haven't read Daughter of Smoke and Bone, fans of the series will certainly eat it up. The book is beautiful and certainly will find pride of place in any collection.

I just finished "Days of Blood and Starlight" and I hurried to see if a little bit romance would seep into this book! I'm tired of all the violence in the previous book. I need some "Zuzana and Mik" time and hopefully some action with "Karou and Akiva".

Suzana is so funny! Well, and weird. I loved this short story... it was funny and romantic.

For a short book, this sure packs a punch of wonder and magical moments that made me sigh. This book is the story of Zuzana and Mik. It is a story of wonder and first love in a snowstorm, of magic, of treasure hunts, a night of cake, and puppets, and violin music in the dark and snowy night. Of first kisses.Violin Boy has no idea what is in store for him,one snowy evening. The rabid fairy has set her sights (and scuppies) on him, and is ready to make her feelings known. In true Zuzana style of course, fully orchestrated into a very charmed evening, in more ways than one. It all begins with a map with a prize, slipped secretly into a violin case, and continues with a surprise at every stop, culminating into one of the most enchanting first date stories. Complete with cake, kisses and peacock footprints.I really loved this short little story. A few quotes that I particularly liked:"People might try to pat me. I see them think it. My height triggers the puppy-kitten reflex - Must touch - and I've found that since you can't electrify yourself like a fence, the next best thing is to have a murderer's eyes." "I have scuppies in my pocket and lust in my heart.""You almost hold up your piece of paper and say 'The girl I like just gave me a treasure map to herself.' ""I want to warm my face against he neck and steam her up like a mirror and write my name on her with my fingertip."If you are a fan of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, you might like this short novella that is a small part of the series. It is definitely a love story though, so be prepared. It was a nice break from fighting and monsters, and I love Zuzana so to me it was perfect, but I know that is not everyone's cup of tea. But if you are a romantic at heart, this book is definitely for you.

Night of Cake and Puppets is a short story/novella about two of the side characters from the main Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. It's not required reading, if you're a fan, but if you're impatiently waiting for Dreams of Gods & Monsters, it might hit the spot. I didn't find Zuzana and Mik all that inspiring as main characters -- they couldn't have carried a novel for me, at least not as they're seen here -- but it is very sweet and I enjoyed the quirkiness. I agree with another review I saw somewhere that mostly, there's a problem with the fact that it's a very straightforward romance. There's no mystery or angst, which wouldn't fly in the main trilogy, but it is a sweet little thing of its own.Still, I can't rate it as highly as the actual trilogy.

Loved it! what a great couple of characters Zusana and Mik are! I enjoyed this little glimpse into their story as they are one of my favorite parts of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and even more so in Days of Blood and Starlight. This little taste has me itching to get my hands on the last of the trilogy. April can't get here soon enough!

E-book from the library - This is a companion novella to the "Daughter of Smoke & Bone" series and takes place during the first book. While Karou is traveling the globe, trying to find a way back to her world, Zuzana is left at home, plotting how to get "hot violin boy" (Mik) to notice her. Zuzana is worried that he doesn't notice her, but with a bit of imagination, the breathtaking city of Prague, and five tiny wishes, she can do anything. The reader, of course, already knows that Zuzana succeeds and that Mik is just the best boyfriend ever. So this story is all about the journey and the prose. The imagery of a quest through Prague in the snow is just as delicious as the romance itself. It is saccharine, for sure, but I have a major sweet-tooth.

My favorite character in Daughter of Smoke and Bone was Karou’s best friend Zuzana. This short story gives readers a look at the first date that’s mentioned but not described in the novel. It’s told from the point of view of both Zuzana, who makes puppets, and her love interest. She creates a series of clues for him to follow throughout the city of Prague on a snowy night. It’s sweet and offbeat and I really loved the whole story.

This is a companion piece to the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. While Karou is out gathering wishes after the gates are destroyed, Zuzana is determined to capture Mik’s heart. This is the story of how Karou’s best friend captured her sweetheart. I love Zuzana because she is the perfect best friend; if you’ve read the trilogy, you will whole-heartedly agree with me! The story is told from both characters’ viewpoints. Zuzana knows Mik but gets tongue-tied around him, so she decides to be brave. She’s not going to wait around and see if he’ll notice her. She makes a plan. Mik knows of Zuzana but can’t make himself talk to her. When he finds a treasure map in his violin case, he is beyond excited that this girl likes him. What follows is Mik following the treausre map and then making his own adjustments. As the short story/novelette progresses, Zuzana texts Karou, making it easy to know when these scenes occurred in reference to the trilogy. The artwork makes the story even more fun, as they are all artists in these stories. If you loved the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy as much as I did, this is a must read!

This is a long novella, fully illustrated, featuring one of the secondary characters from Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy - Zuzanna. I loved her character as she is an absolute scene stealer, and her friendship with Karous is a highlight of the series. The story is of how she met Mik (Violin Boy). It takes place after the first book, when Karou is away from Prague searching for wishes after all the doorways had been burned closed. Karou has left a string of guppies with Zuze to help her create an enchanted evening to catch Mik's attention. The illustrations truly take the story to the next level, giving it a (dare I say) magical quality. It's a lovely romance that made me fall in love with the characters again. The price of the book is a little high considering the length, but most stores are offering a discount which makes it worth the purchase. I would love to see Taylor do another illustrated adventure set in this world. It's a great way to give readers more time with other characters, without taking away from the plot and momentum of the regular novels. Highly recommended.
