Anna was never given a choice. Violently attacked by a member of the Chicago werewolf pack, Anna has had to learn quickly to survive as a female werewolf. Abused by her own pack and beaten into submission. But when she discovers her pack involved with murder, she must make a hard decision. Going above the Alpha of her pack, she calls on the Marrok, leader of all the North American Wolves. In response, the Marrok sends his son and enforcer Charles to find out what the Chicago pack has been doing. What Charles doesn't expect is for Anna to be so severely mistreated by her pack. A family that is supposed to look out for one another. Together the two will discover the evils the Chicago pack has taken part in, and that Anna isn't just any werewolf.Alpha and Omega does a good job setting the stage for a new urban fantasy series. Patricia Briggs tactfully inserts all the rules of werewolves within just a few short chapters. And while it's not necessary to read this before the series, it certainly gives the reader a better overview of the world. This was a second time read for me, and I enjoyed just as much as the first time. While Anna seems like she would be a weak female character given what she has experienced, she is quite the opposite. She knows how to avoid trouble, but at the same time isn't afraid to confront it head on if necessary. Charles is still a bit too Alpha for me, but given he is a werewolf I let it pass without too much fuss. He does have a softer side, as evident from his interactions with Anna, but it takes a lot of effort for it to show. The two characters complement each other well and the plot is pretty straight forward. That's not to say it isn't still interesting. It has plenty of action and of course, there's budding romance hanging in the background. Fans of The Mercy Thompson series will enjoy this new story.

I really love this short story. It shows the beginning part that starts just before the First book, Cry Wolf. It was great to see how Anna and Charles first met and read about what happened to Charles and why he was hurt in the beginning of Cry Wolf.

I bought ON THE PROWL just to re-read this story over and over, then purchased it as a seperate eBook when the opportunity arose. Love the beginning of Charles and Anna, and fascinated to see the Chicago side of the events that unfold in MOONCALLED.

Re-read 11/11 - I love this story, and every time I re-read it I remember how surprised and delighted I was to be on the other end of Bran's phone call. Briggs does a fantastic job of fleshing out her world (without ever making it seem formulaic), and Anna and Charles's story segue's perfectly from this to CRY WOLF.

I read this as an introduction to the series. I would recommend reading it before Cry Wolf, since it really sets up the world.

Charles and Anna are both great characters. I was told the series is more romantic than sexy and I would agree with that. I like how patient Charles is with Anna, and how she slowly comes to trust him.

An urban paranormal romance novella about the internal investigation of a werewolf pack due to murders and forced conversions. It is the prequel to the Alpha and Omega series and also takes place between the second and third book of the Mercy Thompson series.Alpha and Omega is one of my favorite novellas. I love the characters and the descriptions of their werewolf characteristics. The story is engaging with great dialogue and character development. Alpha and Omega makes a strong introduction to the series without alienating readers new to the established world.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories. Few authors, in my experience, are skilled enough at the short form to tell an engaging tale without needing more space or background. And, if they are fantastic, I want more and regret it not being a novel! This story was originally part of an anthology, but Subterranean released this special signed limited edition of just Briggs' story.Though this story does stand fairly well on it's own, it's helpful for a reader to be familiar with Brigg's first mainstream series, "Mercy Thompson". Alpha & Omega takes place in the same world, and major characters cross between the two. Mercy was raised by werewolves; specifically, Bran their leader. Here, Bran's son Charles comes across Anna - a very rare Omega who is in danger. This story is the start of a parallel series, Alpha & Omega, to Mercy's. I think that is why I enjoyed it as much as I did; there is much more to come! A&O is more paranormal romance & MT is urban fantasy, but they complement each other very well. Overall, highly recommended, though this lovely & expensive signed edition is not necessary. The story can be found in the hardcover first novel, or in the anthology much cheaper. But, readers can also jump into the first book without having read it at all.

I know I've read this before. But its sort of forgettable... (I dont really read Omega wolves). Its a good story. I'm surprised its a prequel since "Cry Wolf" started so abruptly that I dont really know where it began.

Well, its about an abused girl, Anna, who noticed something that was happening which resulted a boy being murdered viciously in an animal attack. Problem is, she's a werewolf and she had last seen the boy as a newly turned werewolf in a cage at her packhouse. She called in to someone who can help who in turn send his trusted executioner/son to Chicago. Charles, an alpha-wolf, recognized the battered woman as his wolf-mate but noticed that she was a rare kind of wolf, an Omega who had an ability to diffuse the emotions of any violent wolves in vicinity. However, she was uninformed of her status and was turned into a wolf unwilling, mistreated, abused, raped and malnourished. So, its up to Charles to set things right.

Its a good book, although a tad too long for a novella. I think its a bit too cinderella-like so hence why I forget the book. It didnt strike me enough to make an impression but still a good read for people who like werewolves novels and a bit paranormal politics in it.

I did nothing but read, eat and sleep for several days once the novel caught me. Briggs is a master of just the right detail to tie the story and characters to the believable world. Fascinating. 720 pages.

bookshelves: werewolves, mercyverse, reread This is the background on Charles and his Anna in a miniseries devoted just to them. Excellent writing and characterization unusual in such a short piece. Loved it!Holter Graham is excellent as narrator, both because of his natural voice and his performance.

Set in Chicago, Anna is the lowest in her pack, a werewolf pack she wasn’t given the choice in joining. After years of abuse, she is ready for a change. The Marrock has sent his son Charles to sort things out. Neither Charles nor Anna get what they expected.I listened to this book as part of a group read and it’s a prequel to Cry Wolf. The Alpha and Omega series is a spin-off of the Mercy Thompson series and is more romance oriented. Honestly, it’s been some years since I read Mercy Thompson but I believe I like that series quite a bit more than this series. So Charles is a dominant male among the werewolves and he’s a big handsome guy with skills. He meets Anna and discovers she’s an Omega, which is a person who can soothe and bind a pack together. However, her pack isn’t using her skills; instead they are just using her. By that I mean they take a chunk of her paycheck, have her clean and run errands, and pass her around sexually to reward pack members for questionable deeds. Obviously, Charles is not pleased at this at all. There shall be a reckoning! There was insta-love between Anna and Charles on a primal level in which their inner wolves recognized it but their human sides took longer to figure it out. I liked the dual nature of this aspect of the story. I also like that this tale shows just what the Marrock, Bran, doesn’t want among the North American packs. While some justice is meted out by the end, I felt that certain wolves didn’t show remorse over their actions, claiming they were ordered to abuse Anna and other lesser members. Obviously, some of these wolves will need further calibration. The story had some intense moments, but the romance was a meh for me. I felt that Anna’s character was just too submissive all around. There’s the need to survive a bad situation, sure, but we could have used some inner Anna thoughts about how to avoid the worst of it, or change it, or sabotage food. Something. The Narration: Holter Graham makes a very good Marrock and a very good Charles. His feminine voices were OK. I liked the harsh tones he can adopt when two wolves are squaring off. I also liked his soothing, patient voice for the Marrock.

Solid introduction to the Mercy Thompson spin-off. This novella provides details concerning the other half of the story presented in Moon Called, i.e. what happens when the Marrok sends his son and enforcer, Charles, to sort out the events in Chicago leading up to the attack on Adam in Washington State.

I'm not usually a fan of novellas as they are often too short on story and characterization but this is not the case here as both elements are sufficiently developed and Briggs provides just enough backstory on each character to make the reader feel as if they have read an entire book. It may have helped that it is a prelude to a full length novel.

Anna starts out weak and submissive although there are hints at her spirit right off the bat and she grows in strength until she is capable not only of protecting herself but the hero as well. Charles is a dominant alpha but knows when to stay in control and when to push. His protective instincts are evoked with Anna and the connection between them is palpable.

The investigation into the wrong doings in Anna's pack is comprehensive and the ultimate villain a bit of a surprise. Looking forward to seeing where Briggs takes these characters and how their relationship develops.

A nice start to the series! The characters were unique and memorable, just as I've come to expect of Patricia Briggs. Anna was Changed against her will three years ago and repeatedly abused within her pack. As a result, she thinks all werewolves are monsters and knows nothing about what she has become. When Charles Cornick arrives to investigate the pack, Anna learns she's not as lowly as she's been led to believe. Charles and Anna have great potential as a couple and the omega aspect adds a dynamic paranormal element. There wasn't much time in three chapters for courtship, but I enjoyed how the plot unfolded.

Anna is a young waitress who was forcibly Changed into a werewolf. Her pack abuses and rapes her, but the final straw is the death of a teenager. Anna calls in the Marrock's enforcer, Charles. He immediately sees how twisted and abusive the pack has become, and with Anna's help he kills the baddies.

I love Briggs's Mercy Thompson series, so I was thrilled to find a new series set in the same world. But alas, I really disliked this. Anna is such a sad-sack that I actually started giggling at her woebegone, martyred POV at one point. She's basically Little Nell. Charles, whose main traits seem to be his Native heritage and long black hair, isn't any more interesting. The mystery of what messed up Anna's werewolf pack is so, so incredibly obvious that I was insulted either character wasted a page wondering about it, let alone making it stretch the entire book. Not much plot! Not much characterization! Just a whole lot of Anna and Charles looking at each other, wishing the other one liked them.

It was fine--I can't believe this isn't "required" reading prior to beginning the series, though. I was pretty confused when I tried to begin the official book one (Cry Wolf), and this cleared it up completely.

I do love Charles and Anna. Anna's situation is utterly horrible here - and we only slowly learn why. Charles has been presented as the stoic (or nearly stoic) killer, in the Mercy books; here we learn a lot more about who he is inside, as he finds himself knocked off his base by Anna. It's quite short, dealing with one relatively simple crisis - but I really wish she'd republished it as the first few chapters of Cry Wolf. I've _finally_ obtained this copy (e-novella) so I can reread it that way. I tried reading Cry Wolf a couple times, and found myself struggling to remember exactly what had happened in Alpha and Omega to set up the situation at the start of Cry Wolf - it's rather important. Good story, and an important part of Charles and Anna's story.

In this novella, Anna Latham is a three year old werewolf. She works at a restaurant and is barely making ends meet. When a boy is kidnapped, Anna fears that her pack’s behavior will bring attention to werewolves, which is forbidden by rules. Anna decides to risk her alpha’s ire and the Marrok, the Werewolf Overlord, to report the crime. The Marrock sends his right man, his son Charles Cornick, to investigate the situation. When Charles meets Anna, they connect immediate because his inner wolf (brother wolf) recognizes Anna as a rare type of werewolf—An Omega. An Omega wolf is a wolf that is outside of the pack structure because they are neither alpha nor submissive. They provide a calming influence to the other wolves. Omegas also inspire a need for protection in other alpha wolves.Anyway, when Anna, meets Charles, the Marrok’s enforcer, she was terrified. Charles was a dominant alpha wolf and she has been brutalized by alphas for so long. Charles’s wolf desires to take Anna as a mate and she agrees because she feels safe with him. Anna helps Charles figure out the secret dealings of this pack and sets off to begin a new phase of her life, as Charles Cornick’s mate.

Having already read Cry Wolf, the first book in the series, this prequel didn't hold any surprising information; however, I still really liked it. It's a fast and enjoyable read, even if it is a bit gruesome because of what Anna's Alpha did to her.My favorite part was reading about Charles and Anna meeting for the first time. I love seeing their reactions to each other and realizing that they want to be mates. It was a good call on Patricia Briggs's part to start this series, because I think Charles is such an awesome character and it's a shame we don't see him more in the Mercy Thompson series. Anna is also extremely cool; she's tough while not being overly aggressive and she's keeps calm in the face of danger. After reading about Adam saving Mercy all the time, it's kind of fun reading about a girl saving a guy's ass when he gets himself into trouble. The one problem I see with this is that, as a novella, it doesn't explain much. If you haven't read the Mercy Thompson series or the Alpha and Omega series, this isn't a good one to start on. Briggs assumes you know how the world works and who some of the characters are and doesn't go into a lot of explanation. It's great for those who have already been introduced to this world, either through the Mercy Thompson books or the books in the Alpha and Omega series. This novella isn't necessary in understanding the series as a whole, but it is a good read. I highly recommend it for those who have already started the series or those who are thinking of starting the series.

For having read the Mercy books first, and then turning to the Alpha and Omega series, the transition was somewhat difficult. Anna took a long time to come around (and she's still coming around as I read Hunting Ground) but I think that her character is believable. She was beaten down to believe that she was submissive, although she was a rare and wonderful gift to the wolf world - Omega. And as Charles (Sam's brother, another Alpha) encounters this Omega, you see a transition in the stoic leader and assassin for the Marrock.
