I have never read a novel by E. Lynn Harris. I heard about him for the first time through a podcast from the Philadelphia Library and he sounded like a very interesting person. He grew up in Arkansas in the 60s, which was in itself hard enough for a black boy, but he was also gay and had an abusive stepfather who wanted to beat the "sissy" out of him. I still think his story is basically interesting, but his writing style is shockingly boring. The whole thing just drags along, and sounds more like whiny reminiscing. I would not have been surprised if the guy was an actor, or baseball player, or something of the sort, but he was a writer! of novels! Now I'm not sure if I feel compelled to try some of his fiction, or not. It would have to be much better written than this autobiography!

Fascinating story of ELHs upbringing. Haven't read anything to date by ELH that I did not truly enjoy from page one.
