About this audiobook

After discovering six gold Roman coins buried in the mud of the Devil's Dyke, Barnabas Sackett enthusiastically invests in goods that he will offer for trade in America. But Sackett has a powerful enemy: Rupert Genester, nephew of an earl, wants him dead. A battlefield promise made to Sackett's father threatens Genester's inheritance. So on the eve of his departure for America, Sackett is attacked and thrown into the hold of a pirate ship. Genester's orders are for him to disappear into the waters of the Atlantic. But after managing to escape, Sackett makes his way to the Carolina coast. He sees in the raw, abundant land the promise of a bright future. But before that dream can be realized, he must first return to England and discover the secret of his father's legacy.

Of course I love the Sacketts, even if they are on the rougher side as Galloway and Flagan are. Gold, cattle and obstacles abound. And there is a pretty girl. I enjoyed the book and will continue reading the series. Who would enjoy it? Anyone who enjoys Westerns.

Probably my favorite Louis L’Amour book. Full of action, adventure, battles, piracy, and a touch of romance. LL has such good writing in the Sackett series.

I always loved reading Lamour when I was in my teens. This was my first audio book and I enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to working my way through the awsome sackett series and more!

Flagan and his brother Galloway Sackett plan to settle permanently near a town called Shalako. But their endeavors to start a ranch are opposed by a cattle rustling family. Good entry in the series.

Truly some of the best writing done by Louis L'Amour. I've read and listened to a great many of his books and they never disappoint. I always am impressed by the fact that there's so much research of actual places, events, and character traits woven with an excellent story line. Can't wait to listen to the second in the Sackett series.

To be honest, I'm starting to get tired of the formula. The story was interesting enough; it's not bad, it's just not great either. But on the very last page, Galloway still gets the girl and the gold. Honestly, I was hoping that wouldn't happen. Maybe for once, I'll read a book where girl and gold aren't part of the conclusion. I mean, after all, it was on the very last page. Of course, abrupt ending as well.

This book at least had some new elements- a sniper and a stray dog-wolf. And, it started out uniquely also. Louis really can write a good story, he just doesn't dare break out of his comfort zone, and Galloway is no different. But, I only have a few books left in the Sackett series, then it's off to the "Talon & Chantry" series. Maybe something new will happen there.

Why is this called Galloway?? The main character and first-person narrator is his brother Flagan! Ah, well.... This is a good one - lots of action and strong characters.
