What a fun and wacky read! Not since my days of Roald Dahl have I fallen this in love with a story line. The Whippet Hotel is a place built out of the imagination of a very interesting man. Merganzer Whippet, the hotel's designer, was told that he would one day invent wacky things! If this hotel is any indication, that's completely right. From a room with edible furniture, to one that is built just like a pinball machine (that you can PLAY!) this is a hotel that I would be happy to stay in! I think middle grade readers will fall in love.

When Merganzer Whippet goes missing, it's up to Leo to solve the mystery of the hotel. There's something to be said about a young, brave protagonist. Leo is smart, kind, and adorable the entire way through the book. I loved how Patrick Carman built his relationship with his father, and with the other characters in the story. It's easy to fall into step with Leo as he sets of on a zany adventure through the hotel. You'll find yourself cheering him on, and wondering what fascinating thing he is going to find next!

If that's not enough, the other characters in Floors will definitely sate your need for silliness. Each one has their own unique personality (and in the audio book their own voice). They mean well, but each one has a pretty interesting set of quirks. After all, doesn't an amazing hotel need equally amazing people to inhabit it? It's so much fun to read about their daily lives, and see how they fit into the overall mystery. Kudos to Patrick Carman for writing such a wonderfully vivid cast of characters.

I see this as the type of book that is going to fly off your library shelves. Or, if you have a young reader at home, one that they'll beg you to read over and over. There is so much to love in Floors! Silly, fun, and just downright wholesome. This is the type of stuff that Middle Grade stories are made out of. Definitely recommended!

Leo and his handyman father live and work at the magnificent Whippet Hotel. The hotel is completely unique. Each room has been carefully crafted by the eccentric Merganser Whippet, whose fanciful ideas appeal to the rich, odd, and famous. Merganser knows all the ins and outs of his whacky hotel, but he's been missing for months now. When Leo takes the hotel ducks (yes, ducks) up to the roof for their daily walk, he finds a strange box with directions for solving the mystery and saving Mr. Whippet. Since he only has two days, Leo seeks help from the new doorman, Remi. Together, they embark on a wild adventure, while still trying to get their jobs done, as neither wants to anger the mean manager, Ms. Sparks. They need to find a total of four boxes, and each box contains a piece of the puzzle. Do Remi and Leo have what it takes to work together to solve the mystery? Who is the mysterious person that's creeping around the hotel rooms leaving clues for Leo? Everything at the hotel is breaking at once and either the hotel misses Merganser or someone is tampering with everything. What is going on? Follow along with Leo and Remi as they travel throughout the Whippet Hotel on a wild ride to uncover the truth.

Floors by Patrick Carman is a fantasy adventure that will appeal to your imagination. Reading about the fascinating hotel rooms made my mind soar with possibilities. I would love exploring the hotel and checking out the various rooms- one room is devoted to cakes and sweets, which are replenished daily. Yes, please! Leo and Remi are both loners who build a fast friendship. They have some opposite character traits, which help them to get along, and it was great to see how they reacted to each other. It was also fun trying to figure out what the different boxes meant, and, as I knew so little about the hotel, I was pleasantly surprised once the mysteries of the hotel were revealed. I recommend this book for kids in fourth through seventh grade. Anyone who likes a story where anything is possible will enjoy the first case in the series. This book reminded me how important creativity is, and if we dream it, it can become a reality. At the end of the book we learn that there is more in store for the dynamic duo, and I look forward to seeing where their future investigations take them.

Leo lives in the basement of Whippet Hotel w/ his father.... They have lived there since Leo's mother died. The Whippet Hotel is no ordinary hotel, it has secret rooms, hidden floors, magical rooms, and a special elevator for the hotel's ducks. The guests are as odd as the hotel itself.

Merganizer Whippet has disappeared and the hotel manager, the very nasty Ms Sparks, has taken over. Then things begin to go awry, someone is sabotaging the hotel and it is up to Leo to solve the puzzle and save the hotel. Could it be the mysterious man who wants to purchase the hotel and tear it down?

There was so very much going on, that at first it was difficult for me to keep up.... but the story had a magical touch of creative eccentricity which kept me reading until the end. The story will delight most children who like the wacky world of inventions, fantasy & adventure all rolled into one.

Floors is about a boy named Leo Fillmore. His dad is the maintenance man. One day n the duck lift he finds a purple box with the owner of the Whippet Hotel head, Merganzer D Whippet. Soon after, Leo receives a letter from Mr Whippet's best friend, the lawyer George Powell, saying only Leo can save the hotel, and he must look for four boxes which he has 2 days to find. Children's LiteratureThe many floors of New York City's Whippet Hotel, creation of eccentric billionaire Merganzer D. Whippet, are filled with quirky rooms (the Pinball Machine, the Cake Room, the Robot Room), wacky inventions (the Double Helix elevator), and most of all, Merganzer's beloved ducks. But now Merganzer D. Whippet has mysteriously disappeared, and ten-year-old Leo Filmore has his hands full with helping his dad, the hotel's tireless maintenance man, deal with a series of disasters that suggest that somebody somehow is trying to sabotage the legendary hotel. Then Leo himself is sent on a bizarre quest to find four hidden boxes over the course of four days, each one containing cryptic rhyming instructions for what he must do to save the hotel from impending destruction. Meanwhile, the hotel is being surreptitiously surveyed by lurking Bernard Frescobaldi, who pores over Merganzer Whippet's private papers for clues to help him execute what seems to be a most nefarious scheme. Young Leo is a likeable hero, and it's a treat to spend time in the fascinating hallways of the Whippet Hotel. But few books have ever been so shamelessly manipulative of the reader in a way that amounts to outright deception. When readers discover why exactly Leo has been sent on his strange treasure hunt, and what exactly shadowy Bernard Frescobaldi is up to, they are likely to feel enraged by a massive authorial cheat rather than satisfied by Leo's ultimate success in his mission

This very entertaining middle reader novel has everything...mystery, humor, magic and ducks. Ten-year-old Leo and his dad live in the basement of New York's Whippet Hotel where they are the maintenance men. Leo is led on a mysterious quest for four boxes hidden in the fantastical hotel that will hopefully help him find the missing Merganzer D. Whippet, the owner/builder of the hotel. My favorite hotel room? The Cake Room, of course.

    Throughly Enjoyed this Adventure!

The basement of a Hotel is a strange place to live, much less, if you’re a 10 year old boy! But the again, Leo Fillmore isn’t just ANY, 10 year old boy. He’s the son of the Hotel’s live in Maintenance Man. And, the Whippet Hotel, isn’t just ANY old Hotel, the Whippet is known as an unusual hotel that only caters to the Ultra Rich and Eccentric, and there’s plenty of both to go around when considering the cast of characters who live and work at the Whippet Hotel, and there is no one more Rich or Eccentric than the Hotel’s Creator and Owner, Merganzer D!

But life at the Whippet Hotel, which is unusual on a regular day, is about to be turned upside down, and Sideways!, All Thanks to Merganzer’s disappearance! It’s been 100 Days since Merganzer’s disappeared, and his absence is being keenly felt by those within the Whippet’s walls (and outside of them, too!)

First things first, Leo, while taking care of his usual maintenance duties and helping out his father, suddenly and very mysteriously, receives a purple box addressed directly to him!! You would call it a mysterious box too, if a purple box suddenly showed up in a duck elevator no one but you and your father used, and it was bearing a label specifically addressed to YOU!!

    Suddenly, Leo fu

Ten year-old Leo mostly lives the life of an overworked adult. He and his widowed father live in the basement of the Whippet Hotel in Manhattan, an amazingly quirky nine floor structure built by eccentric Merganzer Whippet, who has been missing for several months now. Whippet was a fun boss who was obsessed with ducks, but since he's been gone the hotel has been run by Ms. Sparks, a horrible woman who screams and threatens the employees constantly. She especially hates Leo and his dad, who are the maintenance crew. They're working day and night fixing the plumbing and a/c, and minding the hotel's flock of ducks, because everything has been breaking lately. Leo and the new doorman, also a young boy, find that the hotel holds a deep mystery that has to be solved in order to save it.A fun story reminiscent of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library.

Leo Fillmore and his father work at the Whippet Hotel, the strangest hotel in New York. Every room and every floor has its own unique wackiness--the Cake Room, the Flying Farm, the Pinball Room--and on the roof, ducks! Maintaining the eccentric hotel just got a little harder for Leo and his dad since the disappearance of the owner, Mr. Merganzer Whippet, and what seem like acts of hotel sabotage. Then Leo receives a purple box. . . . Can he solve the solve the mysteries and keep the hotel running at the same time? For elementary age readers who like light mysteries, also good for fans of Roald Dahl and Vivian Vande Velde's Sammy Keyes series, though the writing here is definitely not on the same par.

A wild mix of mysterious hotel, a cranky manager, a missing owner, an adventure to discover hidden secrets by two young boys, oh, and ducks... never forget the ducks... make for a roller coaster adventure that youngsters will enjoy. No need to fear political or social agendas here, it's just rollicking fun mixed with a bit of mystery and suspense.

Shame! Shame on the author and on Scholastic for allowing this manuscript to be published before a real editor had seen it. There's nothing wrong with the plot or characters or concept, but please spare us the character who has never "stepped foot" somewhere, and the hero whose "eye caught sight" of something. "His happiness brought out a wild glee that tumbled out of his mouth like candy." Say what? Just because an author has been on the NY Times bestseller list does not mean that he is above the editorial process.

(Written by my 8-year old son.) This book was AWESOME – 5 stars. I liked the plot the best, it was interesting and I liked the characters, especially Leo and Remi. They teamed up and they saved the Whippet Hotel. One thing that makes the book so interesting is that every single hotel room is different and not like your average hotel room. There was one that was a life sized pinball machine, one that was a railroad room and one that was a HUGE junk maze.“The entire thing appeared to be made of junk, pile after pile rising all the way to the ceiling. Chairs, old dishwashers, cans of paint, picture frames, books, shelves, computers, telephones, car tires – it went on and on and it all looked like as if it might crumble to the floor any moment.” The author described the rooms really well so that I could see them in my head.I can’t wait to read the next book and find out what happens to Leo and the Whippet Hotel!
