About this audiobook

“You’re going to hell, Jack Nightingale.”

These are the words that ended Jack Nightingale’s career as a police negotiator. Now a struggling private detective, the chilling words return with a vengeance when Jack inherits a mansion with a priceless library—and a terrifying warning from a man who claims to be his father.

Nightingale quickly learns his soul was sold at birth and a devil will come to claim it on his thirty-third birthday, which is just three short weeks away. It’s a hard pill to swallow. He doesn’t believe in Hell and probably doesn’t believe in Heaven either. But when people close to him start to die horribly, he is led to the inescapable conclusion that real evil may be at work. And if he doesn’t find a way out, he’ll be damned for eternity.

Dripping with brooding intensity, unrelenting suspense, and surprising wit, United Kingdom thriller master Stephen Leather’s first book in the Nightingale series is a riveting, heart-stopping mystery with extraordinary range and power.

This book was a lot different than expected, the private detective dealing with the fact his soul was sold to a devil, made for a very weird story. I’ve heard Stephen Leather always does bizarre stories and while it was odd, I really did enjoy Nightfall. I was recommended this author by someone that doesn’t read much, so I was a little hesitant in reading it, but it turned out well. Looking forward to trying some more Stephen Leather.

Nicely written and engrossing - carries you along and leaves you wanting to read more - thank goodness it is the start of a trilogy. If you enjoy a bit of horror, evil, magic, mystery and suspense then you will probably enjoy Nightfall.Jack Nightingale is a former police negotiator (potential suicide/jumpers - that sort of thing) turned private eye (follow your cheating spouse and bring back photographic evidence) who gets caught up in a world unlike anything he ever imagined. "You're going to hell, Jack Nightingale."Someone or something is controlling Jack's destiny and Jack wants to change that.Highly recommended!

I picked up this book after finding it at my mum's house: she'd won it in a competition. I had no clue what the book was about and I initially found the book quite promising. However, the book quickly descended into farce. All the talk of devils and evil characters was very reminiscent of a Dan Brown book, but without the depth of detail that would give the story an ounce of plausibility. Furthermore, the characters did not seem very well fleshed out and the plot seemed very uncomplicated: the main character did something, discovered a name, then immediately visited that person, etc. without doing anything else other than drink alcohol.

Leather has brisk pacing, and each chapter is only as long as it needs to be. Jack Nightingale is not atypical of many other troubled and devil-may-care PIs in the genre, but he is not without charm, and an easy character to follow in his crime-solving ventures. Nightfall is the first in a series of books featuring Jack Nightingale, so though some key questions are answered, others remain to unfold in other books in the series. Nightfall is a quick and enjoyable read for those who like their mystery with a side of the supernatural.

Nightfall turned out to be both more and less than I expected. More because a lot of authors playing with the supernatural tend to let that make up for lack of story. Leather didn’t go that route I am pleased to see. There were hints but it wasn’t what made the story move. It was less in a sense in that the ‘demon’ seemed to have more control of people in Jack’s life than it seemed likely. It seems to be setting a difficult precedent for any future books to deal with.Jack Nightingale was a trained negotiator and was often called out to talk suicides down. Until one day an unexpected thing happened that changed the course of Jack’s life. Now Jack is a private investigator and he’s mostly spying on suspected unfaithful spouses. Not glamorous but it mostly pays the bills. Then one day he gets a call from a lawyer in a little town outside of London. Jack went, assuming it was work, but turns out that Jack’s whole life is about to be turned upside down. The lawyer tells Jack his father just died and he was the sole heir. This surprises Jack greatly because his parents both died in a car accident 15 years previous.Turns out Jacks biological father blew his head off with a shotgun the previous week. He left Jack a video suicide note. Finding out he was adopted was a big shock to his system, hearing what his biological father claimed to have done to Jack before he was even born was just out of this world. It was so far fetched that Jack believed his father to be a crazy loon.I did enjoy this book and while Jack refused to believe what his father told him in the video, it wasn’t a surprise that he was slowly pushed into believing it. Overall I liked Jack, even though he seemed to enjoy his 2 bad habits (drinking & smoking) mostly because everyone else doesn't.

I was told recently by a family member that I need to write something on Facebook besides my opinion on books that I have read...Well, not this time. The reason for staying on course is due to the credit of an author by the name of Stephen Leather. He has written a trilogy of horror/detective thrillers subtitled THE NIGHTENGALE TRILOGY..The first book is entitled NIGHTFALL. Jack Nightengale has a job he is damn good at. He is a police negotiator working in his native England and his specialty is convincing people contemplating suicide not to end their lives...Sadly, he fails at one that tugs at his heart enough to go after the person that has driven a child to kill herself...Her father utters "You're are going to Hell Jack Nightengale" moments later another life ends... Flash forward two years and Jack is now a detective for hire...handling mostly catching cheating spousal cases and providing evidence..Jack's luck is about to change when he inherits a mansion but with that comes a terrible revelation...Not only does he discover that his birth father whom has commited suicide is a satanist but also he sold Jack's soul to the a devil (not THE devil) and the debt is due on his thirty third birthday two weeks away... To do this book justice is not to give anymore away....I found this gem on Amazon Books....Book two and three are availbable on Amazon Books UK...book three to be released in June...in the U S..the two final volumes are to be released in the fall... Patience is not a virtue with me.... ENJOY!

Nightfall ( ISBN 978-1612182292) is a 438-page paperback novel by Stephen Leather. The book is published by 47North and consists of seventy-seven chapters. Nightfall is a fast paced, action packed read, and it is a book that is hard to put down once you start reading it. This novel is the first in a trilogy and I am definitely looking forward to seeing the sequels to this book. The book is a thriller, with a main character named Jack Nightingale, a former police negotiator who later becomes a private detective. Jack soon learns that he is adopted and his biological father has left him a huge mansion, an extensive library, and very little time to save his own soul. Following his father’s death, Jack discovers a message from his father that tells him of the circumstances surrounding his birth, how his soul has been sold to a devil, and that on his thirty-third birthday, a devil will come to claim his soul for all eternity. Nightingale has roughly three weeks to come to terms with what he has learned and to find a way to spare his own soul from damnation. When people begin to die terrible deaths all around him, the situation becomes even more desperate. Jack has to rely on all his skills as a former police officer, negotiator, and detective in order to find a timely solution to his deadly dilemma.

I enjoyed Midnight [my first ever Stephen Leather] so much I couldn't wait to buy the first in the trilogy - I even paid full price at Exclusive rather than buying it on-line or second hand. It's never easy to make a subjective judgement on the first in a series if you have already read the sequel but l certainly don't regret buying the book - nor paying over the top for it either. Lets get it quite clear that this is an occult thriller: I steered clear of Leather in the past because I suspected he wrote Dick fic with a serial hero, but this is no Spider Shepherd tale. Jack Nightingale, a police negotiator, is distrubed when a little girl whom he tries to talk out of suicide reveals she has been the long-term victim of incestuous rape by her well-heeled father. After the child throws herself to her death, Jack goes to see her business mogul dad and during the course of their private interview, the abuser is mysteriously defenestrated, his last words being "You are going to Hell, Jack Nightingale". Fast forward a while - Jack has obviously left the police and is working as a PI, assisted by Jenny, a top-drawer girl friday with brains, beauty, lots of money and excellent academic qualifications. Shortly before his 33rd birthday Jack discovers not only was he actually adopted but his biological father was a Satanist who sold his newborn's soul to a demon called Proserpine in exchange for wordly success. When he tries to verify the adoption bit - the selling-soul bit he dismisses with atheistic scorn - his adoptive family members start dying at an alarming rate, killing themselves after leaving the cryptic message "you are going to Hell, Jack Nightingale" Its a wonderful story, fast paced and a touch creepy but with plenty of witty relief: an added bonus is that Leather has good command of the English language and his writing flows swiftly and smoothly. I'm glad I already have the sequel but am now in the unenviable position of waiting on tenterhooks for the final volume of the trilogy...Shortly before his 33rd birthday Jack discovers not only was he actually adopted but his biological father was a Satanist who sold his infant soul to a demon called Proserpine in exchange for wordly success. This is the first book I've read by Stephen Leather, but it won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller with a twist and came to really like the protagonist Jack Nightingale. It's a great concept for a thriller - an estranged son finds out he's inherited a country mansion, a library full of books on the Occult and a stack of bills... oh and the father he never met sold his soul to a devil and it's only three weeks until the due date, Nightingale's 33rd birthday. Some nice black humour, twists and turns and an ever increasing body count kept me hooked. I found this a great, quick read, totally escapist and thoroughly enjoyable. Looking forward to the next in the series.
