This was a very quick and easy read which is fairly enjoyable, but not particularly memorable or well written.A couple of times in the book, his tone did come across slightly smug, that kind of "you only know if you're a runner" type mindset (I'm "a runner" too, by the way) which always annoys me. But overall it was really enjoyable and in parts, pretty inspirational, particularly in how he conveyed his pure enjoyment of running and how that is probably why he is so good at it, not because he is some kind of super human or running machine. Basically, if you like running enough, you'll want to do it all of the time. And if you do it all of the time, you'll get to be really good at it. If there is anything exceptional about Dean Karnazes, it wouldn't be his body, it would be just how much he freaking loves running. If you're already running 10k's or longer, then I think this is a fun little read to get some more tips and inspiration to take your running to the next level. If you're just starting out then I don't think it would be so encouraging.

This book was a fascinating and inpirational book for me just now, as I'm training for my first marathon! Dean Karnazes' running just amazes me!

In addition to the marathon stories, I enjoyed the gray boxes of tips and extra info, as well as the stats about each race at the beginning of each segment.

At the time that Dean Karnazes was running his fifty marathons in fifty days, Ian and I were preoccupied with new born Harriet. Although he is a local sports celebrity, I have only just heard of him this year promoting his account of those fifty marathons: 50/50.For the 50/50 challenge, Dean Karnazes ran fifty consecutive marathons, each in a different state. All of the marathons were on official marathon routes, but not all of them were run during the normally scheduled marathons. Those that couldn't be run during the usual marathon were recreated. The recreated runs had different permitting issues and could sometimes only have a dozen or so participants running along with Karnazes.Karnazes had a team of handlers to take care of the organizational issues of such an undertaking and he had a bus to ride on between the races. It sounds like it was a nightmare to carry off but they did it.As you can imagine, most of 50/50 is dedicated to the 50 marathons and the 50 different cities visited. Peppered into this runner's geography of the United States are running hints. The hints include training schedules, diet tips and product recommendations. If you are a runner or know a runner, you will probably enjoy this book. If you're not a runner, you can still enjoy reading about Karnazes's adventure. For the non runners, the book is fairly quick and can be skimmed. There's a lot of repetition as to be expected in a book about fifty marathons.

In 2006, ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes realized a goal that had been simmering in his mind for a number of years: to run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. Originally conceived as an epic family excursion, the realities of pulling it off amidst other family member's obligations made it seem unlikely to ever bear out. When outdoor outfitter The North Face stepped up with a sponsorship offer, suddenly the unlikely was not only possible, but would have the resources needed to pull it off.50/50 not only contains anecdotes from the more than 7 week journey, but also is loaded with tips useful for runners of all abilities. Most of us will never have Karnazes' freakish ability to run all day, then do it again the next, and again the day after...etc. Dean was both inspiring and inspired by the people he encountered along the way -- countless individuals who planned to run for just a half and wound up keeping pace to go far beyond what they thought possible. Karnazes rents himself out as a motivational speaker, and while he questions the dubious effect one can have on another if the passion is not already there, he does have a flair for tapping into deep-seated ambition and bringing it to the surface where it can do some good.Dean Karnases is my exact age, so I am definitely not over-the-hill when it comes to setting new athletic milestones. Running a full marathon has been kicking around the back of my brain, kept there by the simple fact I do not love running like Karnazes does. As far as challenges go, however, it is an attainable one: I've run many half-marathons and occasionally train beyond that distance. The next step I suppose to just sign up and do it. And next year, I think I will.

Dean Karnazes is an inspiration to runners and non-runners alike. This book chronicles his amazing adventure of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days in a row. Any serious marathon runner would be happy to run 50 marathons in a lifetime. Dean describes his adventures at every race stop all the trials the good, the bad and the ugly. In addition he mixes in a wealth of training advice, running tips and motivational inspiration all along the way. Obviously running 50 marathons takes more than incredible endurance which Dean has but also you need a little luck and great support from family and friends as well. You will be inspired by reading this book. Dean is a down-to-earth, blue-collar, genuine nice-guy and that becomes readily apparent. What do you do after you run 50 marathons in a row. That's a surprise ending that I win't give away.

Ok, this is most certainly the longest book title of any book I have ever read. To start with, I have read Dean's first book - Ultramarathon Man - a couple of times now. I have enjoyed the rereads of that book and I'm pretty sure the same will be true of this book. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Dean and his running quest, in 2006 Dean attempted to cover a marathon in each of the 50 states on 50 consecutive days culminating at the New York City Marathon. This book brings to life the highs and lows of the journey, including the logistical issues, physical hurdles and emotional struggles that he and his crew endured over nearly two months. But far from being a 'look at me' story, 50/50 spends much of the time detailing what any person can do to improve themselves and reach their athletic goals, no matter what they might be. Dean's writing style is both powerful and inspirational, yet also conversational. It seems like he is sitting in your livingroom having a conversation. I've actually met Dean, and I can tell you that he is just that way in person. In this book, he spends time describing his approaches to diet, fitness, equipment, race strategy and many other aspects of marathon running. Perhaps most importantly, Dean shares his philosophy and provides many quotes that are inspirational to all of us. For instance, this passage really stuck in my mind: "Awakenings are always terrifying, as they force you to realize that yourpast has been lived in confinement. The most disturbing part is when yourecognize that the shackles holding you down are largely ones you have placedupon yourself. the prison is self-constructed. 'We are all living in cages withthe door wide open,' George Lucas once said.It is so easy to live a life that has been scripted for you by others, tofall into the mire of conformity by following a path that society has laidbefore you, rather than heeding your own unique calling. Comfort, complacency, routine, the path of least resistance, the easy road - these things are the baneof humankind. It is a disquieting moment when you awaken to realize thattrappings of conventionality have created a life for you that is entirelydifferent from the one you wish to live"Without a doubt, if you get a chance to read this book, do it. Whenever you are feeling unable to meet the battles that life throws at you or can't motivate yourself to continue training, this book will serve as the wake-up call to get outside and keep moving - whether you are running or living. I highly recommend it for anyone!

Thoroughly enjoyed this as a slow not very good runner. A great write up of an incredible feat of endurance. I found one marathon bad enough!
