About this audiobook

For as long as she can remember, Katarina has been a part of the family business—thieving. When Kat tries to leave "the life" for a normal life, her old friend Hale conspires to bring her back into the fold. Why? A mobster's art collection has been stolen, and Kat's father is the only suspect. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat's dad needs her help.

The only solution is to find the paintings and steal them back. Kat's got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family's history—and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

Ally Carter, known for the Gallagher girls series, comes back to the YA audience with a new series that kicks off with Heist Society. Katarina Bishop wants out of her crime family, so much so that she scams her way into a prestigious boarding school, hoping for a chance at normal life. But, no surprise, her old life catches up with her when several valuable pieces of art get stolen and their owner wants them back. Because Kat's father is on the top of the suspect list, it's up to her to save him by stealing them back.I actually started this as an audio book and liked the characters so much I decided to finish it normally. The hinted romance between Hale and Kat is compelling, as is Kat's desire to have a normal teenage life. Like a lot of action movies, some of the plot defies credulity, yet the just being along for the ride is what's fun. I especially liked how the author wove in a Holocaust reference when she divulged the history of the five stolen paintings, taking the story beyond its surface level.

Narrated by Angela Dawe. "Ocean's 11" with teens! Fifteen-year-old Kat Bishop grew up in a family of master thieves. No mere bank robbers here: they steal art masterpieces. Kat tries to escape the life by attending boarding school. But when a mobster accuses her father of stealing his masterpieces, she must return to the fold to save her father. Along with an assortment of teenaged cousins and co-conspirators, Kat plans the biggest heist of all, breaking into the Henley Museum to steal back the paintings she suspects are hidden there. There is plenty of action thriller derring-do, yet smartly done without weapons or violence. Readers will get a kick out of these teenagers using their talents to get over on authority figures, whether it's the mob, museum officials or family. Reader Dawe convincingly voices the world-weariness of teens who've seen it all but are still excited by the thrill of the chase. Kat is a thief with a conscience, a quietly confident leader who has her moments of insecurity but deals with it.

Someone told me that this was kind of like an Ocean's 11 for teens, and that's a pretty accurate description. Quick, fun read...a little confusing in spots, but that could have been because I was reading too fast to find out what happened.

Kat's family business is crime. Once she's finally had enough, Kat uses her skills as a criminal to con her way into an exclusive private prep school, only to have one of her former friends get her kicked out. The reasons are good however when Kat's father is under the threat of being killed by a criminal family who is convinced he stole their precious art. Kat and her friends have the impossible task of not only finding the art but stealing it back before the deadline passes and Kat's father is killed.
This book is exciting with action that never lets up and enough twists and turns for any mystery enthusiast.

I love it when books surprise me! I didn’t know I would like this and yet I did.

Heist society felt a lot like a twist of an Ocean’s movie but with a much younger cast.

Katarina Bishop could have been like any other teenager, but she wasn’t; at only fifteen she accomplished more jobs that you can imagine; and I’m not talking about waiting tables or cashier at the supermarket kind of job.

    She’s a thief and a skilled one.

She travelled the world looking for the most valuable masterpieces and yet she longed for a “normal life”, so she walked on her old life determined to put it all behind her and start a new life in Colgan, a boarding school for girls. However, her resolution was quickly put to an end as her father was accused of robbing five of the most expensive paintings from a guy who gives a whole new meaning to “bad guy”.

After being called for the job that would clear her father from suspicions, she realized that she didn’t like that her friends had done so many jobs without her, she was afraid that maybe she had lost her touch, she dreaded the change in her feelings toward Hale… but most importantly she realized where she truly belong.

I am going to start with what bothered me:

Theft is one of my most favorite book subjects, as I’d been in love with Fantomas and Arsene Lupin my whole childhood, so I’m a little exigent when it comes to it. A good thief must have a fine taste in art and technology and these teens mostly did, they were good, maybe too good for their age, which got me the feeling of watching a Disney version of Ocean’s. There was even a dialogue or two taken from the first movie; it did bother me a little.

This feeling got intensified as at times, I felt very confused when the author jumped from one scene to the other without a very good transition; it was like reading a movie script and it left me puzzled and very frustrated for not knowing what was really going on.

What I liked most and I’m not ashamed to say it is Hale.

W.W. Hale the Fifth is adorable, sweet, caring, funny, cocky and very much in love with Kat though he didn’t actually say it but couldn’t help but show it all the time. I have a soft spot for friends in love and these two were so sweet to read about, especially with their teasing and Hale’s smugness.

I also liked the principle of this Visily Romani: he’s not anyone, he’s everyone. the Robin Hood of modern times, who robs things, taking them home, to their original masters, right where they belong; he doesn’t rob to enrich himself but for the sake of art. Nonetheless, I was very frustrated not knowing who the mystery guy was, it kept me at edge the whole book but at the end his identity didn’t matter much, it was his objectives and the selfless meaning behind his actions that made him who he is.

Let’s hope the next book will make it up for this one.

You have to suspend your disbelief a fair amount at how competent these teenagers are at all things illegal but it is a fun romp with enough details to make the heist plausible. And although they're by no means angels, this particular heist is for all the right reasons so the reader doesn't feel too morally conflicted. If you like the TV show Leverage, you'll probably enjoy this.

Book on CD read by Angela Dawe First in a seriesFrom the book jacket: When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she’d expected. My reactions:This is a fun, fast, young adult novel with a likeable main character and a totally implausible plot. I did like the intricate plotting, and was glad that the romance was kept somewhat on the back burner. The teen gang ranges across continents, from New York to Paris to London to Italy back to Paris, New York, London, etc. Who wouldn’t want to live this billionaire-lifestyle, even if just vicariously? Private jets, mansions in multiple countries, and a butler/valet who is one-step-ahead at all times, anticipating your every need even before you realize you need it. Loved Marcus! Angela Dawe does a fine job narrating the audiobook. She sets a good pace and has enough skill as a voice artist to differentiate the many characters.

I felt the book confusing. I really got into it finally when they were at the Henley. I wish I had read the author's note at the back about the Nazi's taking priceless paintings in the war before I read the book.

This book is a bit like the art thieving part of White Collar, but without the FBI and with teenagers who are art thieves. You do need to accept a few unlikely things as true to enjoy it, because there's no way that so many people would take a few teenagers seriously. However, it's a very interesting novel if you imagine the characters to be in their early twenties instead of their late teenage years. This is the only negative thing that I found though.

I loved how it kept my attention for so long, that I read it in one day. In fact, I only put it down to eat lunch. Even though it’s the kind of book where you never get the impression that anybody is really in danger, I had to keep reading because I wanted to know how they solved the problem.

Awesome book for fans of Ocean’s 11 and White Collar, as long as they don’t mind teenage main characters. There aren’t enough books about thieves out there and I’ll definitely read the rest of the series.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

This was a fun, entertaining story of a young girl and her team trying to steal back some paintings after they have been stolen from a powerful mobster who blames Kat's father for the theft. While not the most brilliant piece of writing or most convincing storyline, it is still a fast-paced read packed with excitement and adventure, with a touch of romance which will appeal to teenage girls. There are a number of similarities to the movie "Ocean's Eleven" including how the co-conspirators actually break into the Henley, but that was a good movie so it didn't really bother me.While Kat is intelligent, self-reliant and capable, it is the 16 year old billionaire, turned thief, who I really liked. I found W.W. Hale the Fifth to be charming, amusing and very engaging. Looking forward to reading more about these teenage thieves.

This was an extremely fun read, think of it as Ocean's Eleven with teens and girls. Kat used to be a thief (it's the family business) but she decided she wanted out and conned herself into one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the United States. Kat's dad is being accused of a robbery he didn't commit (mainly cause he was busy committing another one somewhere else) by a pretty frightening guy. With Interpol hot on her dad's trail Kat needs to clear her dad of the second crime, or get the artwork back. So Kat sets up her team and breaks into one of the most well protected museums on the planet.

Kat and her compatriots are hugely likable characters. While technically they are criminals, they do have a code of honor that is highly important to them. A lot of this book focuses on that code of honor and on righting previous wrongs and contextualizes an important part of how theft can sometimes be justified (I am trying not to be spoilery).

Such an entertaining book! Heist Society is a fun, quick read, that has you wishing you could be a 15 year old con artist. Carter is good at writing cute, quirky novels with an aura of mystery and intrigue. Always great for a lazy day read.

Kat wants to be an ordinary girl. But her family holds a very dark secret. Kat's family is a family of thieves. So Kat escapes to a boarding school. But Kat is pulled back into the world she had just escaped by her friend, Hale. Kat finds out that a mobster's priceless art collection was stolen. Kat's father is the only one on the suspect list. So Kat teams up with Hale, her cousin, and more friends to get the paintings back in time to save Kat's fathers life. Heist Society by Ally Carter is the best book I ever read. I felt like I was right there in real life. It really gets you wanting to read more. The second book will also be good and I know it. I recommend this book to teens who love adventure and drama. It starts out really good but than for one or two chapters its kind of confusing, but at the end you understand the whole story. The next book "Uncommon criminals" by Ally Carter sounds like a good book.

HEIST SOCIETY was an excellent story about a well-planned caper and about a group of friends with unusual skills. Kat Bishop has decided to step away from her criminal family and has conned her way into an exclusive boarding school. But her side trip is ended when she is framed for a prank and expelled. Then she learns that her father has been accused of stealing a group of paintings from a very, very bad man and has only two weeks to return them. The problem is that this time Bobby Bishop is innocent; he was pulling a much smaller heist in Paris at the time. He wants Kat to forget about it and stay with her safe boarding school life. But that ship has sailed and Kat along with Hale, who might be a boyfriend if they can ever stop sparring long enough to find out, her cousin Gabrielle and friends Angus, Simon and Hamish plan a way to get the paintings back.I enjoyed this whole story. I loved the interactions between all the kids. I loved how conflicted Kat was about her old life and how much she wanted to start a new one. I loved her sense of family loyalty. I also loved that she was one very smart young lady who wasn't going to wait around for some man to rescue her.I can't wait to finally read the rest of this series.

Kat is an amazing character. She's smart, she's quick on her feet, and she she's trying everything she can to help her dad. And it goes without question that I love Hale. He's so amazing! I LOVE HIM! Who else ships Kat and Hale? I, of course, love the rest of their crew. I love Simon, and Hamish and Angus, and I like Kat's cousin Gabrielle. I'm not to big a fan of Nick, though. I also love Kat's dad and her uncle Eddie. This is an awesome book. It's just as good as the Gallagher Girls series.

A fun, light-hearted, Ocean's 11 sort of heist novel with teens instead of old guys, and a smart heroine that we all loved. The teen book club discussion of this one included morality and ethics, as in: is it okay to do the wrong thing for the right reasons?Recommended.

I enjoyed this one far more than I thought I would. I forgot how much I liked the Gallagher Girl series, and this is kind of the other end of the spectrum. In the Gallagher Girls, you had spies. In Heist Society, you have thieves. While it is a little bit far fetched, that didn't stop me from loving it.The only thing that annoyed me was Carter's tendency to refer to the characters as 'the boy' or 'the girl'. It worked the first couple of times, but after that it was just tiresome.Looking forward to the next one!

This was a fun little book about a girl who was brought up in a family where the family business was a bit less than legal. When her father is accused of a high profile art theft, she is pulled to return to the life of crime she left in order to save him from some pretty shady characters. In order to prove he didn't commit the crime, she and her group of friends have to figure out who did, and steal the artwork back, a task that seems impossible. The characters were likable, I enjoyed reading it and recommended it to my daughter.

This story is like Ocean's Eleven. I have to admit, I was kind of annoyed with these teenagers who had an infinite amount of money and were running all over the world. I admire their cleverness though, and by the ending I was pretty into the story, wondering how it would all turn out. I liked the book enough to read the sequels someday. Also, I must add that my teenaged daughter also enjoyed this book.

This was a pretty interesting book, hooked me right from the beginning and had me wondering what was going to happen the whole time. Katarina is a pretty unique character and someone who I really never read about, especially with her being so young. I like the dynamic between Katarina and Hale, Hale seems so handsome and mysterious. The whole operation that they had planned was pretty great, unrealistic I think for that age but still fun to read about it. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series and see what other "missions" they will have together.”

"Heist Society" was a spell-binding read!!!! I have never read any other book by Ally Carter before, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It actually turned out to be a good book. It was like no other book I had read before, surprising me and capturing my attention in ways I thought that never could be. The main character, Katarina Bishop; is an art(painting) theif that was just looking for a break from her family's long-time heist business. So she decided to go to a school for once. At last, she was satisfied; no more getting into trouble. But she wasn't there for long. Someone set her up and got her into trouble for something she didn't do. she was then kicked out. Who set her up? And why did they want her out of this school and into the real world again? Soon Kat finds herself all wound up in the family business again, and has a new case to solve: someone set her father up for a heist he DIDN'T do for once. A man named Arturo Taccone got his paintings stolen and believes that Kat's father IS the one and only suspect. But he didn't steal Arturo's paintings. And if her father didn't do it, then who did? There are many unanswered questions running around Kat's mind and its up to her to help her father out. Kat's adventure will soon become your adventure, too, as you help her solve this exciting mystery. "Heist Society", by Ally Carter was by far a fast-paced and interesting read!!!

This book was "Leverage" for the teen set. I agree with both the high and low reviews --especially the one-dimensionality of the characters.
