INTRODUCING THE ALPHA AND OMEGA NOVELS...

Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack…and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she'd learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country will recognize her value as a pack member-and as his mate.

The premise: picking up RIGHT WHERE the novella "Alpha and Omega" left off, Anna returns to Montana with Charles in an effort to start a new life away from her abusive pack in Chicago and to explore what it means to be Charles's mate. Her wolf accepts him, but her human half has been so traumatized that she second-guesses everything, even her importance as an Omega werewolf. But there's bigger problems at large: a rogue werewolf has been killing near the Marrok's territory, and it's up to Charles to take care of it. Only, Charles is still recovering from his own ordeal in Chicago, which means he has to rely on Anna for help. What they discover is something they never thought was possible, and something that, if left loose, could destroy threaten the entire pack.My RatingWorth the Cash: but do yourself a favor and read "Alpha and Omega" first. I don't care how you do it, but do it. People say you don't need to, but I think you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't. The book's enjoyable, but in my mind, it was more enjoyable because I was already familiar with the world and characters. No, the voice isn't as strong as the Mercy Thompson books, as it's written in multiple-third, but it's still enjoyable, and again, I really liked learning more about Briggs's werewolves. A side note: there's an excerpt from the upcoming Mercy Thompson book, Bone Crossed, and I'll go ahead and say this: it picks up IMMEDIATELY (as in, it overlaps) with the final chapter of Iron Kissed, and what you think happens at the end of that IK turns out is not what actually happens in the beginning of BC. Not that I'll get much more besides that first chapter, since the darn book's gonna be in hardback instead of paper, but at least I have a rather interesting resolution to the end of book three. :)The full review, which does include spoilers, may be found at my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. :)REVIEW: Patricia Briggs's CRY WOLFHappy Reading! :)

Reviewed by: Rabid Reads. Before you say anything, I KNOW. Any werewolf nut worth their salt should be up to date on all things Patricia Briggs. Well, this is me fixing it, ok? The delay actually worked out in my favour because I tackled the SHIFTING SHADOWS anthology prior to this audiobook, and it contained this series’ prequel which really helped to put this story into context, and as a result I avoided the whole lost feeling that many readers experienced. That point aside, I’m still kicking myself for having postponed CRY WOLF for so long because as much as I adore MERCY THOMPSON, she can’t hold a candle to Charles & Anna! I loved the characters, learning more about what it means to be omega, and the author’s switch to the third person POV writing style. It was howling good!I’ve always been drawn to Bran, Charles & Asil, so no arm twisting was necessary in order to convince me to spend more time with these alpha males. I enjoyed digging deeper into Cornick’s Native American half, and getting a closer look at the aspects that make him so unique among his kind including his ability to spawn clothing, and his Brother Wolf. Up until this point I hadn’t interacted much with The Moor, but I really liked him in the ROSES IN WINTER short, and was ecstatic when I discovered that this novel’s main plot line revolved around him. The reasons behind Asil wanting Bran to kill him are now crystal clear, and I loved that Anna was able to bring him some much needed peace. And, hanging with the Marrok is always a pleasure, even when he goes Beowulf.Mercy went through some tough times in Briggs’ other series, however she’s got nothing on Anna—the poor girl! Who would have thought that she’d find solace in the arms of a hitman among a pack of psychotic werewolves, but that’s true love for ya. Exploring what makes her character tick was a real delight, and I enjoyed learning about her omega traits. She’s also a rarity among weres, and when combined with Charles’ oddities, the two satisfied my fur craving to the nth degree. I liked how the author took her time in developing their relationship, and transformed Anna’s unfortunate past into a healing balm for the Marrok’s misfits. Her confrontation with Leah was extremely gratifying, and this book’s ending made a big puddle of goo out of my heart.I had some concerns about the male narrator because I’ve had problems with their female voices in the past; however Holter Graham quickly proved his worth as Anna and Charles. The former was soft without being breathy, and I adored his Native / Welsh lilt, it was very well-done. The third person POV certainly helped on both accounts, and he definitely added an extra layer of enjoyment to my listening experience. I always use the first installment to gauge a narrator’s performance, and Graham’s suitability for this series is uncanny. When I reached the midway point, I was already downloading HUNTING GROUND to my iPhone because I just couldn’t get enough of Briggs’ characters or his voice.CRY WOLF left its mark on this audiobook buff! *muah*

I highly recommend reading the prequel, Alpha and Omega, before reading this book. Anna's backstory is important, and jumping in as this novel does has left several friends confused. My only serious issue with this book is the lack of open communication between the OTP. That's a frustrating trope for me. Then the action part of the story kicks in, and all of that gets wiped away. I'm definitely curious to see how the characters develop with each other.

This is the first book of the series, however, I felt a little off kilter at the opening of the book. It started with Bran's arranged Anna's move to Montana and she already met Charles, and the first battle that Charles killed Anna's alpha was over. I kept thinking this is book 2 of the series, the first book was about how Anna became werewolf and how she survived the abuse and being rescued by Charles. But not this is book one, there were hinting, flash back on how bad Anna was treated. Anyway, the story line is still good.

So this series is very different from the Mercy ones. I love seeing the relationship between Charles and Anna this is the very beginning so they still need to work on communication. Anna is a silent and strong woman but everyone views her as weak

Pearl Ruled @ p116Rating: 2.5* of fiveI just can't. I don't like reading about straight people having sex. So that's why I don't wanna go on...I know your sensitivity to this unpleasant reality is different, but this issue increasingly makes a book unreadable to me. I am not straight, I didn't like straight sex very much when I was having it, and I am just not willing to compromise my remaining reading time with overlooking stuff not aimed at my pleasure centers.

Two and a half stars--somewhere between "it was okay" and "I liked it." The story was interesting enough, and obviously I liked it well enough to read the whole thing. The writing was a little iffy, though, and the shifts between different characters' points of views was overused and not well utilized to begin with. More often than not, we'd get the same scene from multiple points of views instead of different scenes from different characters (thereby providing the audience with information we wouldn't have gotten otherwise). The POV shifts were used more so that we knew there was a misunderstanding occurring between what one character said and how the other perceived their words--sort of irritating, as there are far better ways to do this.

However, I try to give early books more of a pass than I would more recently-written books.

So--the world was interesting, the supporting characters lovely, and even seeing Charles through Anna's eyes was interesting. If not for that, I'd have written him off as boring and underdeveloped (even though we do get his POV throughout the novel). I'm going to read the second one, but I definitely recommend keeping your search of "Cry Wolf" limited to library catalogs and bargain bins.

urban-fantasy, werewolves, witches, ptsd, relationships, mercyverse, series Come sideways into the Mercyverse. This is a side series of the Mercy Thompson books. Charles is a foster brother several hundred years old, and Anna is his very recently found mate. While Charles and Anna are trying to get used to each other, a crisis arises in the Montana mountain area that they call home. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers. Just read it for yourself and get caught up in the world of the werewolf. Holter Graham is perfect as narrator for this branch of the books.

Do werewolves smell of wet dog when they are in human form?

Anna is having a tough week. After breaking up with her old pack she moves to the middle of nowhere with a guy/wolf - Charles - she has only just met. Then when a rogue wolf starts attacking people, she has to help Charles track it down before it exposes the pack. But is it really a wolf?

Cry Wolf is another werewolf series from Patricia Briggs, set in the same universe as the Mercy Thompson series. After being won over by the Mercy series, I decided to give Alpha and Omega series a read. So I started with the Alpha and Omega novella and I am still scratching my head as to why it wasn't just included as the first few chapters of this novel. If you intend on reading Cry Wolf, do read Alpha and Omega first. Or don't: I'm not your mother.

This was quite a hard book to rate/review. It was an enjoyable read, but the breaking of the story between the main novel and the introductory novella throws out the narrative a bit. The romance between an abuse survivor and a really old life-long bachelor as the central plot is interesting, but it does tend to wander as the other events of the novel occur. At times I felt the story was just happening with no real point or destination in mind, but it felt like things tied together in the end. And for a Patricia Briggs story set in the same universe as the Mercy Thompson series it is going to draw comparisons. Whilst I'd recommend this book (and novella), it isn't as good as Mercy and her adventures.

My recommendation is that you'll enjoy reading this to sate your hunger for werewolf stories when you run out of Mercy Thompson novels to devour.

I've loved every Patricia Briggs books I've read so far but this one just wasn't up to par (apologies for the ryhyme).

Firstly, you have to have read one of her anthology short stories to have any clue what's going on, as the book picks up with no explanation of prior events. Secondly, it reads like a straight-out romance novel, unlike any of her other books. There's enough gazing and longing to make this urban fantasy fan nauseous.

Here's hoping she'll return to good form with the next Mercy Thompson book.

Summary: 'Anna never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she'd learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. Then Charles Cornick, the enforcer - and son - of the leader of the North American werewolves, came into her life. Charles insists that not only is Anna his mate, but she is also a rare and valued Omega wolf.' (from back cover.) Cry Wolf takes place in the same universe as Briggs' popular Mercedes Thompson novels, but focuses on the werewolf pack led by Bran, the deceptively powerful leader of all werewolves in North America. His son Charles is a powerful werewolf with a touch of magic from his Native American mother. For years Charles has been his father's assassin, but his wolf half has chosen Anna for a mate - and he's fallen in love with her, too. Anna is an Omega, a wolf who is neither dominant or submissive and outside of traditional pack structure. She doesn't feel the compulsion to follow orders, but rather sends a wave of calm tranquility that soothes wolves in her presence. However, Anna has been suffering abuse at the hands of a sadistic pack for the past three years, and her self-confidence and sense of well-being need to be rebuilt. Charles fills her with happiness, but she must still overcome the abuse she endured. Meanwhile, a Vietnam veteran, Walter, has been living in the wilds for years, afraid of hurting anyone during his flashbacks. While in the wilds of Montana he is attacked by a monster and finds himself becoming a werewolf. The beast which attacked him is somewhere between a werewolf and a ghost, controlled by a powerful and insane witch. Charles and Anna find themselves tracking the bad guys through the snowy Montana wilderness. This is a fast-paced adventure full of magic and action. As usual, Briggs provides real, deeply sympathetic characters the reader can't help but love. There is also a lot of insight and history revealed behind some of the supporting characters from the Mercedes Thompson books. All in all this is solid entertainment, and fans of the Mercedes Thompson series should definitely read this one as well.

After a violent introduction to the world of Werewolves- on the night she became one herself- Anna Latham sees nothing redeeming about being a werewolf. Violent and frightening, the dominant males of her pack beat her down until death seemed the only option out. Yet somehow she found the courage to reach out- and found her mate in the process.Werewolf enforcer, Charles Cornick knows Anna won't fully trust him after the abuse she suffered at the hands of those who were supposed to protect her, but "Brother Wolf" cannot let her go. Cry Wolf begins a day after the thrilling ending to the first story in the Alpha and Omega series with Charles and Bran- Charles's father and leader the werewolves- taking her home with them to Montana. As Charles recovers from the wounds he suffered while rescuing her, Anna must find a way to trust again- not only her mate, but those who would now become her family. Everything she ever knew of werewolves is turned upside down as Charles gently leads her toward accepting her true calling. But the fragile bond they're building becomes threatened when a dark witch makes moves to wrest control of the Montana pack from the most powerful werewolf on the continent leaving Charles and Anna smack dab in the center of the conflict. Secrets long thought hidden come to light, but not in time to head off a deadly battle that will have you on the edge of your seat till the last page is turned!LOVED this story and LOVE these characters. You really should read the first story of the series (Titled Alpha and Omega in the On The Prowl antho.) to get the full emotional impact of Charles and Anna, but I suppose it's not necessary. Briggs knows how to write characters with heart, and I loved seeing Anna grow in strength and courage. Charles's deep love and desire to protect her makes him the kind of alpha hero that works for every woman.I read Cry Wolf immediately after the first in the series because I had to have more! As far as I'm concerned Cry Wolf leads the pack in werewolf urban fantasy! Read it, you won't be disappointed!

I loved the Mercy Thompson series and it was nice to not completely leave that world behind. I also like that we get to hear more about Bran and Charles. But I haven’t developed the same interest that I did with Mercy Thompson perhaps I will as the series continues. Overall not a bad read but hopefully I like the others more.

I have been waiting for this book, after reading the short story that introduced the characters. I think it might be hard to track what's going on if you haven't read the Mercy Thompson books, so go read those first. You're going to want to read them after this one anyway, so you might as well start there.

Still loving this series. Turns out the Audio book is great as well. read 2x.

For some reason, my review and ratings are gone, so my review won't be as detailed as before.

This is a great start to a brand new series that is in the same world as the Mercy Thompson series. I do enjoy reading this book and the other in the series because it shows the werewolf side and how it is run. I love reading anything about Bran, since he first appeared in the Mercy books.

I'm not much for romance, but I do like Charles and Anna and seeing their relationship evolve. It's wonderful to see how both their strength and weaknesses play off of each other.

This is a fantastic story and it gets better as the series goes on.

I would recommend this series to anybody.

This book sweep me off my feet, a sexually/emotionally traumatized heroine, an Alpha werewolf hero, and an instant reaction between mates. This would have made me write off most books, but not this one. Charles and Anna both experience powerful internal conflicts. Fantastic third person POV. Written with twists and turns could not put it down
Read "On the Prowl" first the Alpha and Omega story.

Gripping and satisfying I’ve just finished reading this and the prequel novella, Alpha and Omega, in one sitting. I have previously listened to the first couple of Mercy Thompson books and enjoyed them, but this series promises to be even better. More room is given to character development and I felt there was a greater focus in the storyline, so that the reader is swept into the lives of Charles and Anna to the extent that it is difficult to stop reading. I am glad I followed the advice of several reviewers who recommended reading the prequel first (originally part of a multi-author anthology, but now available as a standalone Kindle book). Highly recommended for any who enjoy the paranormal.

I really enjoy urban fantasy, love Kim Harrison’s Hollow’s series which includes a little werewolf lore but had never read a novel focusing on werewolves and packs and just wasn’t drawn into the story much at all. I hadn’t read Briggs’s first series “Mercy” but started with this because it was an Urban Fantasy book of the month last August before I’d joined and thought I’d give it read. It’s very slow to get moving but about halfway through the pace picks up and it was a little better then the beginning had been. The main characters are somewhat likeable but the rest of the pack were either not very well fleshed out or unlikeable. It was good enough to finish but it’ll probably be a long time before I read another fantasy that focuses on werewolves. If you’re a big fans of werewolves or the Twilight series you may enjoy it, if not I’d give this a pass.

I'm a fan of the Mercy Thompson series, but I really had no interest in the Alpha and Omega series, since weres aren't my most favored paranormal species. But I found myself unspeakably bored at work yesterday and nothing on my kindle for mac app appealed. Until I stumbled across Cry Wolf and thought reading more about Bran and Charles sounded like a great idea.

An excellent read, although I'll still maintain that I prefer the more diverse world of Mercy's. It was a bit tough figuring out what was going on at first, since this book takes place pretty much right after the novella "Alpha and Omega" - so if you're looking to get into this series, start with the novella - it will make the beginning of this book *so* much more sensical. After figuring out what was going on though, I really liked the dynamic between Anna and Charles and I appreciated the amount of time spent on them before launching into the action. The action itself, while not gory, was hard to read at times and I'll admit, I passed right on over anything having to do with hurting animals. It makes up a small, very small part of the story, but those few sentences were more than I could bear. Otherwise, the subjugation of one person by another (I won't say human, as I don't think it applies in this case) is a big theme in the story and I thought Ms. Briggs did a very good job with it - reading it made me uncomfortable, as it was meant to.

I don't know if I'll read the next or not, but I'll certainly be checking it out.
