About this audiobook

From the author of Where the River Ends, comes this page-turning story of love and survival.

On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport.  Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding.  Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.   When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection.   And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently.   And then the unthinkable happens.  The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive.   Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week).  With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens.   Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well.  He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair.  As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling.  And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous.  How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Both a tender and page-turning read, The Mountain Between Us will reaffirm your belief in the power of love to sustain us.

Martin's characters ring with genuine humanity, at times noble and selfish, and at other times weak and fiercely heroic. This story got to me because it felt so real. To survive a small plane crash in the mountains, two strangers have to trust each other and use every resource at hand.

This was so good! I listened to it and it kept me captivated. I really cared for the characters. I had 20 minutes left on Friday and couldn't get back to it until Monday morning. There is a shocker in the last 20 minutes I did not see coming. This is so good!

This was a very quick read. I scored it kinda low because I had just read The River At Night, which is also a sort of survival story but I found it to be more aggressive and in a way more realistic. I expected more things to go wrong in this story. I enjoyed this book while I was reading it and I was compelled to finish. Not sure how the movie compares but I'm excited to see the changes they made for the film.

This is a story about Ben and Ashley, two strangers who charter a plane during a snowstorm to make it home to their partners. During the flight, the pilot has a heart attack and crashes in the wilderness, leaving Ben and Ashley stranded in miles of snowcapped mountain wilderness.

No offense, but I found this surprisingly good. I'm not one to read books in this genre and I wasn't sure how I would feel about it (or if I would even finish it). But, I did finish it and I liked it. Loved it even. I really enjoyed the theme of two people struggling to survive in the wilderness while also maintaining the main focus of Ben and his love for his wife. I recommend anybody picking this book up and giving it a read if you haven't already.

I want to thank Blogging For Books for this book in exchange for an honest review.

The survival story line was quite gripping - how exactly will these two strangers manage to survive and get themselves to civilization? It helps that one of them is a doctor with wilderness experience and that the pilot of the plane was well equipped for back country adventures. Along the way Ben and Alex necessarily open up to each other. Unfortunately the ending reminded me of a Nicholas Sparks novel - there was that emotional hook at the end that just didn't work for me.

I have no idea why I picked this book up from the library, but I will tell you that it did keep me interested and engaged through the entire book. It was a bit romantic (which is not my thing), but not overly done.

I liked this book and I think that it will appeal to just about anyone.

I have been absent on my reviews and participation due to a death in our family. Everything stops and momentum is changed when someone leaves us. This book I am sharing now came at a good time. I think so anyway. So, to the book. Earlier this month I saw a movie trailer for The Mountain Between Us and thought I'd like to see it....but I wanted to read the book first. I always want to read the book first. This is a tale of survival, love, regret and chances missed. This story was engaging and I had a hard time putting it down. People are stranded at an airport and obviously frustrated. It starts with Dr. Ben Payne recording notes into a small recorder about cases he's working on. Ashley Knox sits beside him on the floor so she can share the outlet to charge her computer. They chat and then they part ways for the night since flights are cancelled during a snowstorm. Soon they arrange to share a private flight in a two-seater plane. The plane crashes it the Utah mountains and here is where the story really develops. It seems they are lost, no way to tell which way to hike toward civilization yet they can't sit and await rescue. The pilot hadn't filed a flight plan so no one knows where they are. Both Ben and Ashley are injured and honestly, you'll think things can't get much worse. Fabulous story with a twist at the end.Without giving spoilers I will say a food item mentioned is soup. It's vegetable soup in the book but I present you with a Tomato Basil soup. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. What more could you ask for, great pairing.Recipe and photos at Novel Meals :-)

After reading ll the 5-star reviews, I feel bad only giving it 2 1/2 stars. I picked this book up after seeing that it is being made into a movie with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba (I always want to read the book before the movie), but I was surprised at how much of a "chick-lit" book it is. I found myself rolling my eyes at some passages, pretty sappy. I didn't see the ending coming, though. Won't be reading more of his books.

It's a stormy winter's night and two strangers, Ben and Ashley want to get home. Ben finds a charter plane and offers a seat to Ashley. The plane however crashes and Ben and Ashley are in the middle of nowhere in the harsh wilderness in the mountains.I really want to see the film which is based on this book, but wanted to read the book first. I have to say that I really enjoyed it.The story instantly drew me in and I wanted to know how the Ben and Ashley were going to survive. They have a fair share of problems with injuries and lack of food, and just miles and miles of moutains to cross. As I'm reading I'm hoping that the next page brings a bit of luck for the characters. The book is not perfect and I was left thinking why there was no search party. If Ashley was due to get married wouldn't fiance be wondering where she was. The pilot Grover too has a wife, wouldn't she be wondering where he was. So for me this did put a slight dampener on the story, but didn't spoil it.I quite enjoyed the story and glad to have read the book before I watch the film. There are plenty of positive messages in the book about hope, love friendship and courage but for me it was just a good read to get lost in.

In this modern age, how to three people change their flight plans, hop on a small charter plane and tell no one - no Tweet, no email & no phone call. Pilot doesn't call wife and tell her where is going with a storm system moving in? Guy talks at length above the deep love in his marriage but leaves out a huge detail. SPOILER ALERT: the guy has no obvious reason personally to take the charter. The guy is packing a camp stove with fuel in it on a commercial flight? There's mountain lions and rabbits hanging around at 11000 feet during winter when they could move to lower elevations? i finished it because I started it and it's okay in the middle. But the story has a weird preachy-ness and, in the end, ghoulishness. that I found unsatisfying.

The Mountain Between Us is not your typical love story. Ben and Ashley got to know each other because they really had no other option and as soon as their snow capped journey, or battler to say the least, was over the two went their separate ways. The two find their way back together months later and decided to get to know each other a little more not just because they have to, but because they want to.

A chance encounter in an airport, during a snowstorm forever changes the lives of Ben and Ashley, when their chartered plane crashes in the mountains of Utah. Ben, a doctor and a mountain climbing hobbyist, finds the skills associated with both, necessary to rely upon if both he and Ashley are to survive. Throughout the novel, the theme of unconditional love shines through. Ben, though missing his wife Rachel, finds himself attracted to the woman he's decided will survive to see her wedding day.Charles Martin has written a page-turner of a novel. It is touching and sensitive, as Ben reflects his life with Rachel, the love of his life. The characters are well-rounded and nicely developed. The ending is both unexpected and a bit sappy, but rewarding after such a harrowing journey of survival. I enjoyed the book and would read another by this author.

At best, this story was unbelieveable. Seemed like the author was trying to be Nicholas Sparks. Pretty sappy story.

This is a story that unfolds another story and yet another story. I still cannot believe the ease with which the author was able to pull off the ending. I have read every book by this author and I think this is my favorite. This novel takes us back to the "voice" of the author again. THIS IS A MUST READ!!! I couldn't put it down - read it in 1 day. Interesting, complex, cinematic, redemptive.

This is a story of survival and so much more in my opinion. This is my first book by this author and one of the best I have read this year. Several twists at the end for the reader as well. Just an all around good read.

Beautifully written, this is the story of two people stranded on a mountain after a plane crash. Ben is a doctor who records messages to his wife about his experiences. Ashley is a writer who was on her way to her wedding. The story of the relationship between Ben and his wife is interwoven between the story of Ben and Ashley's fight to survive and get to help.

The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin has all the characteristics of a great summer read including disaster, romance, and a twist ending. Although I had the "twist ending" figured out a quarter of the way through the book, it was still a fun way to spend a few hours. This fast-paced book is a quick read and great for anyone who likes to mix adventure with romance.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but since it was a Charles Martin book I decided to try it out. I am so glad I did, of course! It was well worth it, probably in more ways than just for entertainment purposes.
