About this audiobook

Rachel Morgan is back! Bestselling author Kim Harrison returns with a new supernatural adventure that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris won't want to miss.

Some days, you just can't win. Witch and former bounty hunter Rachel Morgan has managed to escape her corrupt company, survive living with a vampire, start her own runner service, and face down a vampire master.

But her vampire roommate, Ivy, is off the wagon; her human boyfriend Nick is out of town indefinitely and doesn't sound like he's coming back, while the far-too-seductive vampire Kisten is looking way too tempting; and there's a turf war erupting in Cincinnati's underworld.

And there's a greater evil still. To put the vampire master behind bars and save her family, Rachel made a desperate bargain. Now there's hell to pay-literally. For if Rachel cannot stop him, the archdemon Algaliarept will pull her into the sorcerous ever-after to forfeit her soul as his slave. Forever.

Kim Harrison

The only girl in a large family of boys, former tomboy Kim Harrison invented the first Brigadier General Barbie in self-defence. She shoots a very bad game of pool and rolls a very good game of dice. When not at her keyboard, she enjoys lounging on the couch with a bowl of popcorn watching action movies with The-Guy-In-The-Leather-Jacket. She plays her Ashiko drum when no one is listening, and is hard to find when the moon is new.

The Algaliarept plotline leaves me cold, but the world and its inhabitants remain fascinating. Kisten and Rachel are hot together, and it's nice seeing Rachel feeling free to enjoy herself. David the were is an interesting addition to this world, as are the details about Rachel and Trent's joint past.

Forever. My Rating: Good ReadThis book was a lot more fun for me, and that's a relief since I had polarizing experiences with both book one and book two. I'm not only happy to keep reading at this point, but wondering how I'll go about catching up once I get through the last book I own, which is book five. Will I start downloading them on my Kindle? Get the mass markets through Paperback Swap? Who knows, but at this point, I'm happy to keep reading. Rachel's growing a bit, and while mistakes are made, the story is definitely captivating because the stakes feel a lot higher. Lots of action in this book, and if you're a reader of this series, not a book you'll want to miss.Spoilers, yay or nay?: Yay. Some interesting developments in this book that I want to discuss, so if you're not caught up through book three in this series, do not read the full review, which you can find at my blog, which is linked below. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. REVIEW: Kim Harrison's EVERY WHICH WAY BUT DEADHappy Reading!

I love to read a series that just keeps on getting better with each book. The characters in this book keeps getting better to Rachel, Jenks, Ivy, and all the others.

Ah yes, this genre of urban fantasy romance type book. We have one badass heroine, who is smart, fiery, and manages to get into a lot of trouble. Of course, there is the leading guy, and right now, the third book of the series there is 3 - Vampire, Mob Boss, and Normal Human. The plot is so-so, it revolved too much around Rachel's Date with Kirsten. Of course, that is par for the course, so I'm okay with it. The writing it tight, the story fun, and we have an interesting world. What more can you ask for in a book like this?

This felt like a transition book. It's a little less powerful than the first two books, but there's still greatness present in that I have fully invested in Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, etc. and will enjoy a lot with them in it. I was a little disappointed in the whole Jenks and Rachel fiasco, but that will turn itself around soon, I'm positive. Algaliarept is maybe one of my favorite villains. That could in part be due to the great narration by Marguerite Gavin. Highly recommend on audio if you're planning on reading this series. Here's to hoping that the series stays strong.

After the first two novels in this series being so good, this one disappointed me. I'm still not sure what was going on. The characters would be more appealing if I could figure out why they were reacting to things the way they were - they clearly had some idea of what was happening and why that I just couldn't get to.

Mind you, the sex was amazingly well written :) But I expected better of the plot. Hopefully the next one will make more sense.

I liked this audiobook but it was bit of a disappointment after absolutely loving the first two books in the series. This was a re-read for me but I actually didn't remember anything about it from my initial read years ago. I am actually pretty sure that this is the book that I stopped on when I started the series the first time. It was a good book but it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining as the first two in the series were for me.This book started out really strong with Rachel having to deal with Big Al. Things looked pretty bad for her and I had no idea how she was going to outsmart him. She ends up getting a bit of help from his familiar and a werewolf insurance agent. It was a close call for Rachel and while she is trying to recover a secret slips out and Jenks ends up mad...and leaves. I missed Jenks constant presence in this book. This book really seemed a bit more focused on the character relationships. I can't say that I really liked all of the developments in this installment. Nick can't handle being near Rachel so he leaves town. Rachel starts dating Kisten and while they have chemistry it seemed to happen way too fast. Ivy is having her own struggles with Piscary and staying in control. Jenks needs some time away to cool down. This felt like more of a transitional book that may be laying the framework for future books.I did enjoy the narration in this audiobook. Marguerite Gavin is really the perfect narrator for this series. She is Rachel in my mind but she also performs all of the different voices very well. I never have any trouble understanding who is speaking and her delivery really keeps my focus on the story.I would recommend this book to others. This is the third book in the series and I really do think that this series needs to be read in order since everything builds from the earlier books. Readers who try to read this as a stand alone will most likely be quite lost. I am looking forward to starting the next audiobook in this series very soon!

There's a new underground player in the Hollows, and he's putting his own brand of Brimstone on the streets. People are beginning to die. Both Piscary and Trent want the new competition out of their city, and Rachel is about to end up in the middle of it all. To make matters worse, every time she taps a line she risks calling Al across the ley lines. Rachel can't escape the demon forever, but she doesn't plan on becoming a tool for him either. Rachel is going to have to make some tough decisions, ones that will scar her forever.I confess the reason I love this addition to The Hollows series is Kisten. I need a Kisten in my life. He can be a royal pain, but deep down he knows that Rachel is broken inside from failed relationships. He's not about to walk into one with Rachel and expect her to change, or give him something she isn't able to. And while he can be pushy, he also knows the clear signs of when to back off and respects them. Being a living vampire, yes he wants blood, but he's willing to go without it for Rachel's sake. Though lately it's been hard for her to say no.Rachel is learning to toughen up in this novel, even if it has to be beaten into her. Each time she goes toe to toe with Al, it's nothing but page-turning action. Watching her try to outwit him and find whatever loopholes are exciting to read. She's also taking on increasingly harder runs allowing the reader to see how much she is beginning to change as a character. Even if it means some of her morals are starting to be compromised. The farther Rachel journeys down her path, the more involved the world-building becomes. We start to learn more about Rachel's father and what exactly happened to him. And the Ever After is no longer just something to be seen through second sight. It becomes a tangible area that begs to be explained in future novels. There is a rich history there, just begging to be tapped into.As always, The Hollows is an adrenaline filled ride. I can't wait to continue to the next!

I love the whole hollows series. Rachel, Ivy and Jenks pull it off time and time again. Magic, mystery and danger follow them where ever they go.Harrison just keepings getting better. Fantastic series for people who like urban fantasy but find the sexual overload necessary. I look forward to each and every book.

Another great book. Just missed the 5 star mark simply because of the 'chaos fatigue'. By that, I mean that it seemed there was a never ending onslaught of trouble, chaos, and near death for Rachel. It was exciting at first, but at some point it was a little too much and made me stop feeling the anxiety I'm sure that it was intended to make the reader feel. With that negative, I'll get on with the positive:Rachel is finally finding out that she can take care of herself (with the help of her friends) and that her decision to leave the IS was a good one. Her love life takes a more interesting turn - with some hot, steamy activities included! [ At the risk of sounding like a pervert, Harrison has my curiosity piqued - just what kind of anatomical differences are there between a witch, a human, and a vampire? ] I must say that I enjoyed the character development of Kisten - we finally see a side of him that shows just how 'human' he can be. Ivy still has some major issues, but I have a feeling that Harrison will delve into those as the books progress - at least I hope she does. Otherwise all of Ivy's angst will really be for nothing. I did miss Jenks for much of the book though. I can't wait for him to reappear. Thankfully, I have the next book on my nightstand:)

This was very good but having said that, there were scenes that just pushed me a little too far for comfort. Two in particular, were you were just reading the bad situation and waiting for the save. You knew the save was coming, whether from Rachel herself, the situation, or friends, and you were going, "OK, I get it she is getting hammered, pushed past her endurance, or losing her ability to think".

These situations happen when she is being attacked not necessarily by enemies. In the case of vamps, it can be Ivy being pushed too far. So, it is not that the situation happens, it is the length of it happening and her questioning herself then pulling the rabbit from the hat, well not so much because there always seems to be consequences. So there are several of these in this book and it pushed me to roll my eyes and know there was going to be pages of this before the resolution. I would skim except I'm too afraid that I am going to miss something quick but very important to the rest of the story/series.

So after get through the two big scenes that bother me, and several smaller ones, and completing the book, I was happy with the over all story and really wanted to go on with the series. I did and the next book starts with exactly the this type of situation. I'll have to see if it starts annoying me enough to quit but right now the story is so engrossing, I doubt it.

Very good story. We get to see how Rachel evolves and gets to know herself better. She learns more about how the genetic manipulation effects her and what part her dad played in the whole thing. Nick runs scared and Rachel feeling abandoned, takes up with Kirsten. She never thought she would get that close to a vamp but things change. And things further with Trent. She saves his life which give a respect that wasn't really there before. I suspect something will happen between Rachel and Trent sooner or later as his reasonings for bad behavior are quite compelling. Rachel herself has made many poor choices. I really didn't like Jenks' reaction to the knowledge that Rachel held the information of Trent's species from him. People are allowed to have secrets and vows that bind them from admitting things and it was way over reaction. Her making out that it was so awful a thing to do was idiotic. Perhaps she should have told him that she knew it, but not what he is. That is something that she agreed to keep to herself.. The story over all was very good but there were things that got in my way from giving it a 5 star review.

Rachel Morgan is very interesting. While this book didn't pull me in like I thought it would I still wanted to finish the book because the characters are interesting. The relationship between Rachel and Ivy is kinda weird still, but maybe soon it wont be so much. Kisten seems to be the relief between the two almost.. and Trent is a character that I find intriguing. Will be continuing with this series.

The Hollows by Kim Harrison is definitely one of my favorite series of all time. Every Which Way But Dead is the third book in the series and is another example of the excellent writing of Kim Harrison. I think I'd enjoy reading her grocery list.Rachel is in trouble. She's wrestling the demon Al to keep her freedom; trying to find her way in her relationship with Ivy, her roommate; getting hot under the collar for Kistan, the vampire; and arguing with her partner, Jenks. So, yah, everything's normal. While the story is great, the genius as always in this series is the characters. Harrison writes characters that can pop off the page and go out to dinner with you. As long as it's not Piscary, the vampire kingpin. You can read this book without reading the first two in the series, but I think it would be more enjoyable to start with the first book, Dead Witch Walking and read them in order. This series is a must read for paranormal/supernatural vampire, pixy, werewolf fans!

    Every Which Way But Dead
    4 Stars

There is a lot going on in Rachel’s life as she deals with becoming Algaliarept’s familiar, Nick’s aloofness, Ivy’s possessiveness, Kisten’s advances, Jenks’s hurt feelings as well as a possible Were stalker, a dangerous extortionist and last but not least, Trent Kalamack’s mysterious machinations. With all this, its amazing that she hasn’t lost her mind yet … or has she?

The majority of the book revolves around introducing new characters and developing existing ones. The actual storyline only puts in an appearance in the last few chapters, which is disappointing as I am more of a plot than a character driven reader. Nevertheless, the updates on Rachel’s past and her interactions with the different people and beings in her life makes for entertaining reading overall.

There is a great deal of focus on the men in Rachel’s life in this installment. The developments with regard to Nick are positive and I, for one, would be glad to see the back of him for good. While not exactly hero material, Kisten is growing on me, and his actions and motivations, although morally questionable, appear to be more straightforward than Nick’s (at least on the surface). More information is provided on Trent and his agenda that sheds light on his past actions and makes them more understandable if not completely acceptable. While he still isn’t trustworthy, he is starting to redeem himself a bit.

The two new additions, Lee and David, are both very intriguing. Lee is little more than pond scum and it was good to see him get his just desserts although something tells me that we haven’t seen the last of him. There is also more to David than meets the eye and it will be interesting to see where Harrison takes his unusual alliance with Rachel.

Ivy and Rachel’s relationship is as creepy as ever mainly due to the fact that Ivy is unwilling or unable to accept that Rachel only wants to be friends not blood buddies. Nevertheless, the angst is toned down somewhat so I’m willing to put up with her.

On a final note, Marguerite Gavin's narration is superb as always and she does an excellent job making each and every character come to life. Looking forward to the next chapter of Rachel’s adventures in the Hollows.

This book didn't really get going for me until around 300 pages in--not great, when it clocks out at ~450. The last action-packed bit was fun, though; I just wish that the beginning hadn't been so uninspiring. But I'm starting the next book right now, so obviously this wasn't that much of a deterrent.

Again better than the last one - the series is hitting its stride at this point. It's still a little unfocused, plot-wise, and there are several threads that don't really go anywhere yet - like Ivy's ex-girlfriend who apparently showed up just to remind Rachel that her roommate does, in fact, like chicks That Way. (And my ongoing objection to Rachel's unexamined homophobia is not diminished in any way - look, if she didn't want Ivy, why write her as continually almost reacting to her?) Despite that objection, Kisten is an infinitely better romantic interest than Nick, mainly because he's, you know, interesting. And the long-overdue development of Trent as an actual person and not just a paper target for Rachel's rages helps a lot.

I actually find the whole demon subplot sort of baffling and boring, because it's clear that she's never really going to lose to him. And the whole "which crime boss is going to take over the city" is also of minimal interest. So while the surface action holds up, and the characters are often engaging, the series still hasn't really revealed its major arc yet.

I keep making my way through this series, hoping that at some point I will really, really like it. So far, I've been somewhat disappointed. There is so much potential in the story lines and characters, but to me, there always seems to be something lacking. The characters and their relationships are not fully developed, and the story lines are often awkward, implausible, and seemingly hurriedly put together to just end the book already. For example, I don't feel that Nick and Rachel's relationship was ever very important in the story lines. There was no real connection established. Then we are expected to be upset when he is absent for most of this third installment in the series, and what's more, believe that Rachel herself is heartbroken by his absence? It's even less believable when it barely takes Rachel five minutes to end up in bed with another character because he made her feel pretty (well, maybe it was more than five minutes, but it wasn't a whole lot longer than that!). One of the highlights of the series for me is Jenks, and sadly, he was absent for most of this book as well. The ending was quite disappointing and unbelievable. That Big Al would do what he did (don't want to spoil it for you!) makes no sense, especially considering all the effort he expended on Rachel to get her right where he wanted her. I keep hoping that things will come together and I will actually like Rachel Morgan, but I'm starting to have my doubts.

I actually really enjoyed this book. Of the series, this has been my favorite so far. I was anxious to finish it, but I also didn't want to finish it because I didn't want it to be over with.I will say that I was disappointed by the climax of the story. I was hoping for more of the scene in the ever-after, or at least more than a 'oops, Rachel passed out and woke up with another mark' kind of thing.Overall, I did really enjoy the book and can't wait for more.

This was my favorite of the series... by far... it was very suspenseful, had some great character development, and the author even managed to make the relationship between Rachel and Ivy make more sense (I did not like where it had gone in the previous book in the series). The only complaint I have about the story, actually, is that the Jenks thread struck me as poorly justified (i.e. his behavior didn't really make sense) and as far as I can tell his overreaction played out the way it did because the author didn't need him in this story and it was easier to have him out of it, than to write some sensible reason as to why he wouldn't be accompanying Rachel. I liked how the romantic thread played out. I'm glad Nick wasn't a big player in this story (he's such a weakling and isn't nearly good enough for Rachel) and I even enjoyed the butt-kickings that Rachel doled out. I'm not completely sure what the whole demon scene near the end meant, but I suppose it'll play out in the next book in the series. Which, of course, I'm going to read.

Lets start by saying this is my favorite Author and Series! That said Rachel is back to give A1 a headache and change the rules of the game as always. In the process we get to meet a new character Ceri. I believe the future is going to be quite interesting where Ceri is concerned. She has some new tricks that Rachel can put up her sleeve. Kim Harrison has delievered another page turning action never stopping adventure through the Hollows.

In this book Rachel (main character) gets a giant bunch of problems thrown at her all at the same time. She deals with a distant boyfriend, a half-crazed vampire roommate, a pissed off pixy, a 1000 year old elf/demon familiar, and loads more. While reading this book I am happy about my common nothing overwhelming kind of life because if I had Rachel’s life I’d die of exhaustion. The author definitely has a key for keeping things interesting the whole way through the book but at the same time easy to follow. She’s very consistant with her other novels’ story line and keeps everything rolling smoothly. She doesn’t back track to cover lost ground from previous books like some authors do. Where you could pick up the 8th book in a series and know about everything that has happened the past books with no problem. I hate that. If you read a series, read it from the beginning or don’t read it at all. Anyways the author has done a good job so far of not turning her books into supernatural smut books which I appreciate. I’ve always been about the progressive of a story not the details of imtimate acts every other page. Kim Harrison is becoming one of my favorites. I love a flawed heroine that gets out of sticky situation only by the skin of her teeth. Can’t wait to read the next one to find out what happens next. I wish I lived in the Hollows…..

Just as much fun as the other books in this series. More complications in Rachel’s personal life, of course, and more difficult jobs. It’s nice to see the characters, especially Rachel, evolve and grow as they discover more about themselves, their relationships and their skill set. Waiting impatiently to get my hands on more!
