About this audiobook

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck-impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence "Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I'll shut up about it?"

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you've come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door-not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

My daughter asked me to pick this book up for her at the library. While I had it, I decided I would read it. I really did not know who Mindy Kaling was before I started this book, yes, I am old.

This book felt like I was sitting with my daughter and her friends talking about their lives, or as another reviewer said, it felt like sitting in an LA coffee shop and chatting with Mindy for a few hours, hearing a bunch of funny anecdotes, and getting to know her a little better.

I read this book in a few hours and it let me know what this group of writers and actors went through. I really must watch "The Office" and perhaps The Mindy Project. It is funny that as I read these memoirs from this 30 something group, they all seem to have grown up with the same problems and issues and become comedy writers. Interesting.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is a collection of humorous essays from comedian/actor/writer/director and sometimes producer Mindy Kaling, most famous for her work on The Office and, more recently, her own show The Mindy Project.

I will admit that I have never actually watched The Mindy Project and only made it through about 20 minutes of an episode of The Office before turning it off. I literally cannot watch situational humor; I'm not misusing the word literally, either. Whenever a character enters an embarrassing situation, I am compelled to cover my ears and close my eyes and hum until it's over. (As an interesting note, this is apparently genetic - my brother and father to do the same thing, something I did not find out until I was 20). Unfortunately, much of Mindy Kaling's humor seems to be in line with this, as evident by the fact that Will Ferrell makes three of her top funniest moments.

So why did I pick up this book? I've seen several .gifs of the Mindy Project and thought they were funny, and in interviews, Mindy Kaling seemed admirable.

Unfortunately, I just didn't find this book funny. It wasn't bad, but it only managed to make me really crack a smile once during the entire thing. Most of it was somewhat humorous, but nothing laugh-out-loud. This is fine when you're writing a fiction book, but less so when you're writing a collection of comedic essays.

I added that caveat at the beginning because it may be that I just don't get her humor, and fans of her show and work on The Office will be rolling in the aisles, but it seems to me that the problem was a perennial one: most comedians just cannot make the jump between visual, face-to-face humor and prose. Ellen DeGeneres, whom I adore, wrote a book similar to this one, and I felt the same. It was random and disjointed. Kaling at least makes the attempt to give her essays some kind of linear progression, but it just never quite coalesced.

Overall, the parts that were the funniest were her asides, the actual writing itself, and her experiences during childhood. The first half of the book was actually fairly engaging, but then it just petered out toward the end, when it should have been getting more interesting.

For fans, you might check it out. If you're only passingly familiar with Kaling and thought you'd give it a try, however, I would skip it.

I've never been a big watcher of "The Office," but the episodes I've seen didn't make me a huge fan of Kelly Kapoor. I know it's stupid to assume that a character is similar to the actor playing them…but I do. I think most people do, honestly - who doesn't automatically think Michael Richards is Kramer? But I digress. The only books that have held my attention lately are humorous essay collections and memoirs, so when I saw Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, I decided to give it a chance. I'd previously flipped through the book in bookstores and chuckled at the table of contents, but that was the extent of it.

Now, though. Now I am in love with this woman. We need to be best friends. It started when the book opened with her joking about her weight and love of diets. I love when women are up front about not being anorexic, because 'fessing up to that is something I have trouble with, for no good reason. As Mindy goes through her life, I learned that she used to write sketches for Saturday Night Live characters with her friends, or go through an event pretending to be someone else or a random made-up character. So many chapters made me think "I did that, too!" and feel pleased with myself.

Towards the end of the book, she reveals that she is a size 8. Not to get all size Nazi, but I was furious. She spent a whole book saying she was a big girl but happy with it, and she's a size eight? I understand you're dealing with skinny ladies in showbiz, but come on!

Then I read the next page and was in love with her again. So much made me laugh. A truly fabulous book.

This was a very enjoyable book, full of stories of Mindy's childhood, and early professional life. It was fun to read and I can't wait to read her next book.

Not quite a memoir but also not quite a collection of essays, this feels a bit like delving into Mindy's brain into a curated tour of the bits she thinks are funniest or most interesting. It's entertaining and if you're a fan of hers, you'll enjoy it but not a must-read.

Hilarious. I wish it had been twice as long. Mindy's high school experience - of freskishly close female friendships, and telling ghost stories or learning dance routines together rather than dating (or even talking to) boys - is so similar to my own, I was like, "Wait, did I know her in high school?" It's great to see a classy broad like this take the comedy world by storm.

Disclaimer: I'm a big (relatively recent) fan of Mindy Kaling. So my review is probably biased.I found this book very funny - lots of great stories about her early life and her start in television, and her 'voice' really translates into her writing style. It was a quick read; I kept going back to this book instead of the other 5-6 sitting on my "unfinished" list. Looking forward to reading the newer book too.

Compilation of essays from Mindy Kaling, who you may know better as Kelly Kapoor from TV's "The Office". Kaling writes about everything from landing (and keeping) her job at "The Office" to the difference between dating men who are really adults and men that are still enjoying adolescence. I found it very funny; and because it's a series of essay's you do not have to read them in order.

If you've ever watched her show, The Mindy Project, the humor in this book is very similar. So of course, I loved it. Kaling borders on self-deprecating and overtly cocky (so does that just mean normal?) as she reminisces about her childhood, tells of her rise to comedic gold (by way of The Office), and discusses random anecdotes that keep you laughing. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? furthers my want to have a friend like Mindy Kaling.

First of all, the amount of praise that went around this book was pretty big. Mindy is kind of a big deal. I figured I would be in for a funny little ride.
In actuality, while I did find it amusing, I was not as impressed as the rave reviews led me to assume I would be. Kaling did a phenomenal job with the dry humor, but the book as a whole was really disjointed. Maybe it is because I read so much (and so little of this style) that I had a hard time with how random the book was... the chapters were individually funny, but the book just didn't flow. This turned out to be good and bad. The bad was that it annoyed me... I just hand a hard time getting going with so many different little anecdotes. The good was that it broke the book up and I was able to read it by sections. I kind of appreciated the humor more in a sense because of that.

Overall, I giggled and did enjoy the book. My favorite chapter was Best Friend Rights and Responsibilities. I laughed and totally related to it... then promptly emailed the chapter to my best friend. I gushed over how much it fit us and how different parts of the chapter focus on different parts of our long friendship (including that awkward part where we didn't hang out for a few years).

I would recommend this one to those who are looking for a giggle and some really light reading. It is definitely for those who aren't easily offended and enjoy dry witty humor. Oh, and if you're interested in Mindy at all, totally get this. I feel like I know everything about her now. Not to mention the awesome pictures scattered throughout the book.

I literraly did not put this book down. I finished it in a day, which I don't think I've done ever. This girl is great! Funny and smart! She has a lot of great things to say behind the guise of being silly. Definitely worth picking up for a good laugh and a little heartfelt truth about life in general.

This is such a fun book!Sometimes sincere, sometimes uncontrollably humorous, this is a very good book. I love Kaling's confidence. And her writing style was relaxed and casual, like listening to a good friend. I also loved all of the book references from everything from Jane Eyre to Harry Potter. From silly antidotes to some serious topics such as being judged on one's weight, Kaling keeps it light and entertaining, while still portraying her fabulous self-esteem. A great book that is a quick read but a load of fun nonetheless.

Honestly, I've never seen The Office or The Mindy Project, but when I see Mindy Kaling, I think, hey, she's kinda funny. So, I decided to give this book a try. There were parts that made me laugh out loud, several parts, actually. There were snippets that I shared with friends immediately. However, there were a few places where I just kind of rolled my eyes and skimmed through the essay. Since it was a mixed bag, I gave it three stars, though, honestly, I wish I could've given it more like 3 1/2 stars.

Mindy is funny, and her path to fame is pretty interesting. But, we all knew that first bit. The book is pretty random and pointless, as can be expected. It is a great beach or short plane read.

Mindy Kaling comes off just as likably on the page (or audiobook, in my case) as she does onscreen - my only criticism would be that she's too self-deprecating, as accomplished and hardworking as she is! I still say pick up Bossypants (Tina Fey) first if you're looking for a great memoir-by-a-comedian, but this is currently my 2nd place pick.

I don't want to start playing the "comedienne memoir favorite game" but I have read exactly two, and the other one was Tina Fey's and this is my second favorite comedienne memoir I've ever read. I don't feel bad about that either, because I kind of feel like Mindy herself would think "yeah, that's fair".That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy reading this book, I genuinely did! I love Mindy Kaling so much. You have no idea how much. But strangely we have very little in common. She is very big into things like fashion and makeup and dropping comments about how not a big deal her weight/body size is two chapters after off-handedly talking about exercising. These are things I've never really understood, this kind of conspicuous femininity. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's just not something I can identify with. I think I might have been called a "tomboy" once or twice as a kid but mostly it's always been a case of "I don't give a fuck". I'll wear a skirt if I feel like it (I rarely feel like it) and I'll dress like I only shop at Walmart if that's the kind of mood I'm in. Sometimes I wear makeup to work, sometimes I can't be bothered. I get the feeling like Mindy Kaling would have trouble with these things. But I digress. The thing is, I enjoy Mindy's comedy, and I think that's the reason why she wrote this book. To showcase her brand of personal comedy. And I really enjoyed that. I also noticed she is working on a follow-up book and I will be first in line to buy it (or on the reserve list at the library, I don't know, it depends if I'm a poor student again by the time it comes out).

After reading and enjoying Tina Fey's Bossypants, as well as watching every available episode of The Office, I was super interested in reading Mindy Kaling's book. I can tell you now, she did not disappoint. Before reading Kaling's book, I had read a few varying reviews and was nervous to move forward. But to be honest, I don't see why anyone would view this book negatively. No, it's not a story that makes you feel changed or enlightened. But it's not supposed to, because it's not a story. It is the life of a successful comedy writer and actress. I don't know what was expected of this novel by other reviewers, but I went into it with an open mind and came out having enjoyed the few hours it took me to read the book. Kaling begins the novel as expected, reminiscing on her childhood and presenting stories relevant to who she is now and what she has accomplished. The book is laid out much more like a collection of essays on her life and experiences rather than a chapter book, which I think is very effective. We don't want to read a day-by-day account of Kaling's life, nor do I think she would want to write such a book. She presents us with anecdotes and lists that allow her comedic voice to shine, and make us feel like we've gotten to know her a bit better. She's not shy about liking or disliking her coworkers. She presents her life as it is, without trying to convince us of some kind of glamourous and shiny Hollywood facade. And now, if I could just find a way to spend a night out of the town with Mindy. Let's be honest: she'd be fucking brilliant.

It was fine I guess. I didn't know much about Mindy Kaling and I honestly still don't. I'm happy for her that she's living her career dreams. But I picked this up to meet my need for a "funny" book in my reading challenge. I laughed once....in 219 pages written by a comedian...just once. Oh well. Moving on.

Listened for Fun (Library)Overall Rating: 4.00Audio Rating: 4.00First Thought when Finished: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling was a fun and delightfully refreshing listen.Note: I have never seen The Office or her show but this was recommended to me by a friend. That friend was right! I found Mindy to be delightful and oddly identifiable. She is not at all what I expected of someone who made it in Hollywood. She was super down to earth, loves her family, and sounds like the kind of person I would want to have in my friend circle!Overall Thoughts: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? was a fun "not in my normal reading sweet spot" read. Mindy was super easy to like. She does have an incredible life but she totally has the same concerns as the rest of us. She never comes across snobbish, instead I wanted to be her BFF. She seems like she would be delightful to hang out with and talk about the normal stuff all of us go through. I dare you not to like Mindy after reading this! I just don't think it would be possible.Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Mindy Kaling, Michael Schur / Length: 4 hrs and 37 mins Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur did an awesome job with narration. I actually prefer biographies to be narrated by the person because they bring their emotions to their voice. It made me love Mindy more!Final Thoughts: If you are ever in the mood for a fun biography then pick up Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling
