I can't say this book was excellent. It started out promising but then went blah blah blah boring stuff then SUPER fast at the end and left you hanging. I HATE WHEN BOOKS DON'T FINISH AND LEAVE YOU HANGING. each book in a series should be self contained and have an ending... ugh..

I had a difficult time getting into this book at first, but by the end I was hooked. I really dislike how this book ends. I despise it when authors end the book on a cliffhanger; as a reader and consumer I feel cheated....only getting a partially finished book.

Characters who pissed me off: Katelyn, Cordelia, Coredlia's entire weird psychopath family, Stephen (yes, I know he's part of Cordelia's family, but he gets to be named just because he's a douche), the Coach in the book, Kimi, Lucy, Basically every character in this book

Characters who didn't piss me off: Ed, Trick, and Jesse (Yes, he's part of Cordelia's family, but he's too adorable to hate)

Only 3 characters didn't make me want to bludgeon them, THREE. Although after I saw the "A new trilogy with the passion of Twilight and the grandeur of Fallen" thing, I wasn't expecting much. Twilight sucks. Fallen sucks even worse. Why anyone would want to model their books after them is beyond me, but whatever. I did not like this book. I did not like the characters, I did not like the plot (I use the term plot loosely because, well, there really wasn't a plot.) I did not enjoy this book at all. Katelyn is basically a judgmental brat who jumps to conclusions that are so far out of the realm of reasonable, that I often found myself either:

    1) Facepalming
    2) Head-Desking
    3) Saying "What the hell?!"
    4) A wonderful combination of all 3

I know we were supposed to feel sympathy for her Her mother died in an earthquake/fire trying to save her. Which was Katelyn's fault because she was acting like a fucktard and kind of just chilling in the smoke but she messed up right at the beginning. Later on I felt a little sympathy for her because Kimi sucks as a person, but she quickly lost it by being an idiot.

Justin is a cheating douche, that is all.

Kimi is a shitastic "best friend" who completely forgets about Katelyn a week after she moves. I mean really? If my best friend moved half way around the country, I would be calling her, and skyping* her (side note about this later), and making plans to visit her over breaks, and e-mailing, and im'ing and texting, and basically staying in contact with her 24/7. What did Kimi do? She found a new best friend within a week. A WEEK!

Cordelia is kind of self-centered, like at first I liked her, but then she was rude to Trick, and later she just morphed into this incredibly annoying person and her only goal was to let everyone know how badly her life sucked. Oh and Coredlia's family? They're all batshit. Like seriously, they're all crazy. When Cordelia brought Kat home, her sisters come out and go "It looks like a stranger, it smells like a stranger too." Like wtf? If I were Kat I would have hightailed it out of there. Cordelia's dad is just as crazy, but he's more of a sneak-up-behind-you-and-stab-you-in-the-back crazy, than a run-towards-you-with-an-ax-screaming-like-a-banshee crazy like Cordelia's sisters. But basically, they're all just crazy, just different kinds.

*Way to play into the podunk smalltown stereotype, Holder. I mean really? They have no internet? No cell service? Their school doesn't even have a librarian? She went way beyond the realm of reasonable and started treading in pulling it out of her ass territory. Personally, I live in Colorado, and i've noticed that people tend to do the same thing when they have the book taking place in Colorado. For future reference:

    1) It does not snow in CO every day
    2) There are not mountains everywhere in CO
    3) Denver is not a "small town." Neither is Aurora.
    4) Most schools in CO don't have ski teams.
    5) Not everyone in CO knows how to ski (I've lived here my whole 18 years and I've never gone skiing in any of those 6574 days.)

I know, I got off topic, but those things infuriate me whenever I see them. If you're going to write about something, do RESEARCH on it. Don't just buy into every stereotype you've ever heard and assume that they're true. Most of the time, they're not.

I read this for the first time last year when it came out and loved it, I love it even more this time! It might not be action packed but the book has so much suspense in it!! I liked Katelyn as the main character. She isn't kick ass but she also isn't a meek little thing. She losses her mother and has to go live with her grandfather in the middle of nowhere. She has to start a new school so her granddad gets someone to drive her there. Enter Trick whos hot, sweet but also mysterious. She makes friends with Cordelia Fenner whose family is very odd and from then on out something happens to Kat that changes her life forever.
I loved everything about this book, it has tons of mystery, suspense and also hot guys!! We get to see Kat grow up alot and deal with alot of heartache. I loved the myths and legends that Wolf Springs has and the mystery surrounding the town. There are so many shady characters and you just dont know "who done it". I highly recommend and look forward to reading more :)

I am conflicted when it comes to Unleashed. I am a huge fan of the Wicked series by these two authors. It is no secret that I like heroines who aren't perfect and Katelyn McBride is most definitely not perfect. She is a big city LA girl who fully expects the people in Arkansas to be wearing cut off jeans and overalls chewing on hay and there are various references to banjo (which I found funny). She is a city girl snob and I'm fine with it. Kat is a young woman whose life has changed drastically and traumatically. It's OK that some of her thoughts and actions aren't always PC or nice, give her a break. Really, perfect heroines are no fun. Let's get to the other characters. Trick (I love this name)...I don't know how I feel about him. His actions are all over the place and are never explained. He is sweet and cares for her sometimes and other times he is a class A jerk whom I wish Katelyn would punch in the face. Now on to Cordelia. I actually liked her at the beginning of the book, but by the end I felt pity for her and wanted Kat to punch her too. Justin, Jesse, and her grandfather were all good characters and I was perfectly happy with them. Now we get down to everything else. There is a lot of mystery in this book and along with that a lot of unanswered questions in the end. There is a HUGE cliffhanger, but I think a few of the mysteries should have been wrapped up. The massive quantity of unanswered questions going on in the book confused me in the beginning and left me confused at the end. There was just too much. Hopefully the next book will do a better job of wrapping some of this up. I actually didn't see the "big surprise" of what happens in the book coming.(Email me if you want to talk about this) Will I be buying/reading the next book? YES! Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie are just too awesome and this series has too much potential for me not to. I am torn between a 3 1/2 and a 4 rating. It was a good book, but could have used some tweaks.

Unleashed by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie is the first book in the Wolf Springs Chronicles. This is a paranormal story but honestly most of it felt contemporary because of the main character's emotional journey from losing her mother and reconnecting with her grandfather . The story starts off with the tragic death of Katelyn McBride's mother. She is then forced to move in with her estranged grandfather. Katelyn goes from living in California to Wolf Springs, Arkansas. You can guess from the town's name what supernatural creature is in this book. There is the werewolf aspect but there is also a mythical creature called Hellhound that supposedly dwells in the forest. I really liked the Ozark Mountains as the setting for this novel. It provides some history and mystery and is almost like another character in this book. The town is full of superstitions and legends. Katelyn and her grandfather live out in a cabin in the woods. This adds an eerie isolated feeling to this novel. The cabin is very rustic without many of the accommodations that most of us are used to. This adds to the feeling of isolation and vulnerability throughout the novel. On Katelyn's first day in Wolf Springs, she meets Trick, a friend of her grandpa and her ride to school. He's sort of exotic and mysterious but also really sweet. Through her new secretive BFF, Cordelia, she also meets Justin. He is hot and has a dangerous vibe about him. Katelyn is almost like a cat in heat around him. She seems to act not on her own whim but of some internal force, that she doesn't understand, driving her. She seems torn in two directions, thus the love triangle begins. However the phrase "It's complicated" doesn't seem to cover what's going on with them. Katelyn is an okay character. I got frustrated with her at times because she seems so inconstant with her emotions and actions. There's a lot of mystery surrounding the characters. The author(s) only reveal a little information at a time. Which left me frustrated but also wanting more. The story line is good. It's predictable at times but entertaining none the less. There are some aspects of this book that I really liked but for the most part nothing really stood out for me. I did enjoy this book but it left me with some unanswered questions. I think this is a good first book to this series but I hope the next book will flush out the story more. The ending to this book left me hanging and I really want to find out what happens next. I will continue with the series not only for that but because I think this series has good promise to turn into something really good.

There’s something that I noticed whilst reading this one and I think I knew it for quite a while, but it just came to the forefront of my mind this time around. One of the things unique about their writing is how the story is carried. The majority of it is held firmly aloft by the actual dialogue in the story. Now that may not seem like a truly surprising feat, but really….think about it. In today’s Young Adult genre, things generally go one of two ways; either the author creates a world so fantastical it’s hard to believe, or they step into a future version of our own world with realistic enhancements. These authors stay firmly planted in the present and let the story build out of the characters alone….with much success. After all, there’s no need for extensive world building when you have all you need right here and let’s not forget that it makes it all the more real when you can identify with what the characters are seeing, going through, or where they’re at. Anywho, I believe I made my point…moving on….Characters! Oh those crazy beautiful character…no really! Most are pretty faces, but there’s a lot more there too. Let’s see, hottie number 1: Trick; the Romanian-esque speaking, cowboy boot wearing, smoking in a oh-my-let-me-just-gaze-at-you-a-minute-longer sorta way. He’s definitely hiding something which is a no-no if you’re going to get anywhere with the girl of interest, but despite the reputation he has, acts the gentleman…for the most part (hey, even Prince Charming was a jerk sometimes I’m sure). Hottie number 2: Justin; the equally sculpted, relative of her newbie best friend Cordelia, with eyes that could penetrate your soul, and enough magnetism to draw the Earth’s core. He’s got that bad boy thing going for him and is hiding something just as much as the other “man” in question….but with heat like that, he’s hard to resist despite any wrong doings. Ah yes, so many guys…so big a decision to make….which leads me to our main character, Katelyn.Katelyn has been through heck and high water with losing her Dad a while back and now, the death of her Mom. Now, let’s say we ship her off to Arkansas away from everything else she knew and loved to live with a Grandfather she’s barely ever seen and expect her to be peachy-keen. Umm, yeah….not so much. She DOES her best considering the circumstances…..she even comes to like her knew home to a certain degree, if only she could stop being attacked by woodland creatures, and gain a little freedom because really does she need to be home before dark EVERY night? Let’s just say that her Grandfather has good reasons for what he asks (though I’m curious if he will ever verbatim say why)…reasons she finds out in good time on her own and through means she’ll possibly live to forget (not possibly forget….possibly live as in may not…you’ll have to read it to find out). Thankfully she has her new bestie Cordelia to help her out, right? Not exactly. It seems she’s hiding things too and they aren’t exactly what you might think either. Now as mentioned with the two hotties previously, there is obviously a romance angle to the story. The best way I can describe it without giving too much away is this….it totally fit the song “Love Me, Love Me” by Big Time Rush (whose recent CD happens to be in my car…I totally blame my coworker for introducing me to it). There’s energy, indecision, desire and passion all palpable straight off the page…and yet still demure enough to be a teen friendly read, albeit mid to older teens and beyond. *le sigh*There are many hidden truths to uncover in the small town of Wolf Springs. Some you may anticipate, some you may guess….others will take you by surprise as they turn up the heat but rest assured, this series is getting off on the right foot. Werewolves and legends and mysteries abound....

Katelyn McBride was at home with her mother when there was an earthquake. Because Katelyn had taken some medicine, she wasn’t as alert as normal. Her mother ended up dying and that is something that haunts Katelyn. Because of this, she has to move in with her only living relative: her paternal grandfather in Wolf Springs, Arkansas. Katelyn, who is later nicknamed Kat, isn’t happy about this move. She wants to stay in sunny California with her best friend, Kimi Brandao. She hasn’t had contact with her grandfather in a long time and doesn’t want to stay with him.On the flight to Bentonville, Arkansas, she overhears someone talking about Jack Bronson and his seminars in which they talk about embracing the “wolf side of your nature.” To Katelyn, this just brings back memories that she doesn’t want to think about. When she lands in “Banjo Land,” as Kimi nicknamed it, Mordecai McBride, Katelyn’s grandfather, is late to pick her up. Katelyn immediately dislikes her current situation, from her grandfather’s truck to his house.Trick is the boy who her grandfather has arranged to give her a ride to school. At school, she learns of a girl who was recently killed in the forest. She is warned to not go into the forest alone. On the way home, Trick and Katelyn (who was nicknamed Kat by Trick) hit a deer in their car. When Trick was taking the deer off the road, there appeared two wolves that scared Katelyn. This was her first encounter with the wolves, but it wouldn’t be her last. While studying with her friend, Cordelia, Katelyn learns more about the wolves. During one of the studying sessions, she meets Cordelia’s cousin, Justin. Now she has a dilemma. Not only is Justin taken, but he seems to have a spell over her when he is near. Then there is Trick… When she learns of another disappearance in the woods, things really start to get scary for her and makes her want to learn what is happening even more.I liked this book. It flowed nicely. You really feel sorry for Katelyn in the beginning of the book because she feels as though her mother’s death was her fault. Being the new person in a town of people who has been together for a long time is difficult. Then there is the grandfather whom she hardly knows. I Liked:▪Katelyn. Even though she is sure that she will not like it in Wolf Springs, she does make an effort in school to find friends. The disappearances of the kids spark her wanting to learn more about the history and the wolves.▪Trick aka Vladmir Sokolov. There are people in the school who do not like Trick and warn Katelyn to be careful around him. He has his moments where he acts like a normal teenager, but for the most part, he is a gentleman.▪Justin. Katelyn is enthralled with him when she first meets him and when she meets him thereafter. She doesn’t understand why she is drawn to him. In some instances in this book, I do not like Justin’s character. It was a hard decision which side to put him on, but the like won out because he does have some redeeming qualities.▪Mordecai McBride, Katelyn’s grandfather. As Katelyn’s only living relative, he takes her in because of a sense of duty. At first, you can tell that this is just as awkward and difficult for him as it is for her. He really wants to know her, and eventually warms up to her. He really is not a bad person and you can tell he thinks that it is in Katelyn’s best interest to be around family.▪Cordelia. Cordelia is Katelyn’s friend in school. She is on Katelyn’s side when nobody else is and helps her through some troubling times.I Did Not Like:▪Codelia’s family, her father and two sisters, Arial and Regan. They have an air about them that they are better than everyone else and it makes their characters less likable.

If you are looking for a story that is filled with tension and suspense, this is the story for you. Katelyn McBride comes to live with her grandfather after her mother dies in an earthquake. She has to adjust to a new home with a grandfather she doesn't know very well. She also has to adjust to living in a small town in the Ozarks instead of Santa Monica. She also comes to the town after a young girl is mauled and killed in the woods. Her grandfather insists that she not go into the woods or travel alone after dark. This is just one more for thing for Katelyn to get used to. She meets a number of the kids and begins to form friendships. But it seems that everyone has secrets that they aren't sharing. And everyone tells her to be suspicious of everyone else. She rides to school with Trick who is a hottie but she doesn't learn very much about him. She is befriended by Cordelia who really hates Trick. Cordelia also seems to blow hot and cold. She does some things that confuse Katelyn. Katelyn also meets Justin who is a cousin of Cordelia's who is also a hottie and who comes on to her even though she has a girlfriend. She and Cordelia are assigned a social studies project to investigate a local legend. They decide to investigate a lost silver mine which is supposedly guarded by a hellhound. Locals tell of visits by the hellhound every 40 or so years. After the death of a second young girl, the idea that the hellhound might be responsible adds to the fear and tension in the town. Cordelia is really conflicted about doing the project. At first she tries to convince Katelyn to choose something else, then she agrees to do, and then she is hesitant again. Katelyn doesn't know what to think. While I liked Katelyn and felt connected to her, I didn't feel much connection with any of the other characters. I found Cordelia especially problematic. She seemed so inconsistent in her relationship with Katelyn. Finding out that she was a werewolf explained a little of the inconsistency. In this story, werewolves keep their existence secret and have very strict rules about their behavior and especially about telling outsiders what they are. Cordelia doesn't let Katelyn know she is one until after Katelyn is attacked and bitten by a wolf and starts experiencing symptoms that indicate that she might be turning into a werewolf herself. We don't get to know too much about Trick or Justin either. Katelyn is attracted to both. She doesn't understand why she feels almost compelled to be with Justin. Trick is very interested in Katelyn but she can't talk to him about the whole werewolf thing. Justin knows about the werewolf thing because he is one himself. However, Justin shouldn't be involved with her because his mate has already been chosen for him. It is sort of a love triangle but the relationships aren't resolved. The story ended abruptly leaving most issues unresolved. It seemed that there was a really big build-up of suspense and excitement that all came to a very abrupt end when the book ended. Readers will be on the edge of their seats waiting for the next book in this trilogy.

After the death of her mother Katelyn is sent to live with her grandfather in Wolf Springs. It is a huge change for her from the life she has lived up until now. UNLEASHED for the most part is a set up book. It sets up the scene for the series, introduces you to the characters and gets you really worked up to leave you with a big cliffhanger at the end for the really awesome stuff that will hopefully be coming along in book 2. Having said that, I still really enjoyed it and didn't want to stop reading once I picked it up.The pacing was a bit slow on the start which made it take a bit to get into the story. I liked Katelyn. She of course was a bit miserable in the beginning but I had no trouble connecting to her character. She is from a big city so she of course is not really excited at the prospect of being in a small town. Trick is mysterious. I honestly still cant tell you what he is all about. I cant tell if he is hiding something about himself or trying to hide something about something else to try to keep Katelyn safe, hopefully some things will be revealed in book 2. There is also another guy in the picture, Justin. He is also a bit mysterious but also has dangerous added on top of it. Not sure who I'm rooting for but they both seem like they would be a good match after everything is thrown out there. There was a great cast of supporting characters. I enjoyed the small town set up and the mysteries of the town are still keeping me guessing. I'm excited for book 2!!
