About this audiobook

Edgar-finalist Rosenfelt's riveting sixth legal thriller (after 2006's Dead Center) brings independently wealthy Paterson, N.J., lawyer Andy Carpenter to the defense of a very special domestic violence victim, Yogi, a golden retriever alleged to have bitten its owner. Andy uses the court system to spring Yogi from an animal shelter's death row and adopt him, adding the dog to a small family that includes longtime pet golden Tara. But when the gang goes for a walk that leads to a joyful reunion between Yogi and a woman named Karen Evans, Andy learns Yogi is actually Reggie, presumed dead five years earlier after the conviction of Karen's brother, U.S. Customs Inspector Richard Evans, for the murder of his fiancée, Stacy Harriman. Suspecting Richard's innocence, Andy tackles the case like a dog on a chew toy, undeterred by an intricate web of deception involving a possible government coverup. No shaggy dog story, this puppy's alive with reliable Rosenfelt wit and heart.

I immediately loved the Andy Carpenter character when I first began listening to the audiobooks a couple months ago. It’s such a refreshing and “fun” read. The author is so witty and engaging in the story lines, and the audiobook reader is awesome! I feel like I know Andy as a friend! I wish I did!!!

I do love this series! Sharp, witty writing, lovable characters (especially Tara), and good plots. I would adopt a golden right this minute if circumstances would allow! Maybe someday ...

There are few things lawyer Andy Carpenter likes more than golden retrievers, so when he hears that one is in a kill shelter after biting his supposed owner, Andy is determined to save him. He doesn't expect to find out that the dog was once the beloved pet of a man convicted of murdering his girlfriend. When Richard Evans's sister sees the publicity about Andy saving the dog, she immediately comes to him because the dog was supposed to have been killed by Richard in the same incident when he killed his girlfriend. If the dog is still alive, what else about the night his girlfriend died and he tried to overdose isn't true? She's never believed that her brother could have killed anyone and asks Andy to look into the case again.Andy agrees to meet Richard and form his own opinion though he already has positive feelings for the man because of his dog. But as Andy begins to look into the case and especially the character of the woman Richard was supposed to have murdered, he finds he is disturbing something that some very powerful people don't want uncovered. Andy's shot at, has his home bugged, and hits all sorts of roadblocks including not being allowed to indicate that the girlfriend was in the Witness Protection Program. And even after he finds out about the conspiracy, someone is murdering the participants. This was another engaging entry into the Andy Carpenter mystery series.

I think I'm burned out on Rosenfelt. I remember originally liking his style but now it's kind of overly cute and not interesting. This plot was fair but disappointing.

murder, murder-investigation, conspiracy, contemporary, snarky, suspense Two trials, multiple deaths, governmental obfuscation, and a dog that appears and is later kidnapped. Very suspenseful and very good.

A dog that was supposedly drowned at sea spurs Andy on to represent its owner during a retrial for murder. Accused of killing his fiancée and trying to commit suicide, but having no memory of any of these actions, he is little help to Andy in determining what really happened. Author David Rosenfelt writes a compelling tale of subterfuge and murder, but Andy, being Andy, always brings a level of humor not often seen in suspense novels. That's what makes this series so great. That, and Tara, of course.

This is an author I have never read before and found him very entertaining. A lawyer who inherits a fortune so that he does not have to work, but gets drawn into interesting cases none the less. Plots are interesting, but less than stellar. However, the characters are charming and the dialogue is great with moments of incredible wit and sharp sarcasm. I am looking forward to backtracking on earlier books to catch up from the beginning.

Another fun one, although the back story slipped a little. Edna has suddenly worked there 15 years, gaining 7 or so. The rest of the story wasn't quite as tight as the previous ones, either. Still entertaining, though. I'm going to listen to the next.

This is another book which has been languishing on my TBR pile for about two years now and turned out to be a very satisfying B read for me. I have read nearly all of Maryl Sawyer's backlist, quite enjoying her romantic suspense titles, a genre, I don't favour all that much, usually.

The book's ratings on goodreads is quite low and even though I wouldn't declare it groundbreaking I find Play Dead to be an entertaining, satisfying read with a hero and heroine I enjoyed very much and who had some serious sizzle between them.

I am by no means a specialist in the gadget department, but what I always enjoy in Sawyer's books, is, that she conveys to me a good insight on various industrial sectors such as the publishing industry or, in this case, the mixed martial arts and surfing trade. Checking online I just saw that her site has gone offline recently, I think she maybe has retired from writing.

This is book #6 of the stand-up comedy/mystery/dog-related legal procedural series featuring lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever Tara.Andy is asked to save a golden retriever in the animal shelter “condemned” to “death row” since, in New Jersey, a dog which has bitten someone must be put down unless reprieved by the owner. But it is clear the alleged owner is abusive, and that this dog, named “Yogi,” is sweet and loving.Andy takes the case and saves Yogi, but “Yogi” turns out not to be “Yogi” at all, but “Reggie.” And that’s just the beginning of a conspiracy involving false identity, bribery, smuggling, money laundering, and false imprisonment.Evaluation: Once again, Rosenfelt provides laugh-out-loud moments with a good legal procedural story. If you need a diverting book, you can do a lot worse than the Andy Carpenter series.Rating: 3.5/5Jim adds: This is the second Andy Carpenter book I have read, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. Sometimes when the main character is a lawyer, the author takes creative license with the rules of civil or criminal procedure to enhance the drama of the situation. That is always annoying to lawyers (at least to this one), but even though these books are more comedy than deep drama, Rosenfelt avoids that kind of error. In this book, it was especially difficult to avoid that kind of error since one of the dogs in the story had to "appear" in court to "testify." The judge's ruling to view the dog's behavior as a part of the proceedings is plausible, if not entirely probable. In all, a fun way to pass the time.

Rosenfelt does New Jersey to a T. Attorney Andy Carpenter is a wise-cracking, dog-loving, not-very-brave guy who tries to be a misanthrope but deep down is a sweetheart of a guy. The plots are accessible but not simplistic, the characters are engaging, and you find yourself really caring about what happens. If you enjoy books featuring dogs or books set in New Jersey, don't miss this series.

A crime-and-trial mystery in which a golden retriever plays an important role. The dog's part enhances what is already a solid suspense. Original elements. Recommended, even if dogs don't ring your chimes.

Lover of golden retrievers, Andy Carpenter saves one from a death sentence at the local pound by taking him on as a client on court. Coincidently, Reggie (the retriever) was the witness to a murder five years before. The roller coaster starts. I couldn't resist picking up this book just for the cover.
