This final volume charts the decline and dissolution of what was once the largest empire the world had known. From the first signs of decay in the imperial ambition in the Boer Wars, through the global shifts in power evident in the two World Wars, it offers a perspective that is honest, evocative and occasionally elegiac.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Brilliant. If this be prose it is only just. All aspiring writers should listen. The style is lyrical, the history sound and the story gripping. Start with volume I (this book is the third and final) and get the unabridged if you can. The audio book is beautifully narrated too. Uniquely, by today's standards, Morris covers the things that are to Britain's eternal credit along with the human failings. It might be unfashionable today, we are supposed to think them all wicked, but Morris captures the adventure of it all and a muscular kind of manly virtue now unfamiliar. The great and remarkable women of empire are all here too. You will cringe at times (guess what people were different 150 years ago) but find plenty to admire and, more importantly, come to better understand.
