About this audiobook

From New York Times bestselling author Jeff Abbott... Everyone has a memory they'd like to forget. For federal witness Miles Kendrick, it's the shootout that left his best friend dead--and Miles a hunted and haunted man. While helping his psychiatrist with a mysterious favor, Miles stumbles upon an illegal research program that could free him--and millions of others with post-traumatic stress disorder--from crippling memories. But when his doctor ends up dead, Miles must run for his life from a murderous conspiracy that gives new meaning to the word "fear."

A guy in the witness protection program has psychological problems. He hooks up with two other patients of his shrink, and they have an action adventure. Main character is haunted by his best friend, whom he killed. Their "conversations" are very funny. Plot had too many details about things we didn't care about tho.

The story keeps moving, which is good. The characters are multidimensional, which is also good. And, they almost all are 'crazy', suffering from PTSD, which is cleverly used to smooth the edges of the characters' motivations, and to justify their shared devotion to the drug being illegally tested on them. The doctors are all shady, whether they turn out to be good guys or bad guys, most of the rest of the non-patients are also shady, or not present in the story for long enough to care, and the list of actual 'good' guys becomes vanishingly small by the end of the book. I found the character motivations unconvincing, though, and there were so many dead bodies stacking up that I was quite surprised there was not a heavier police/FBI presence after about the first quarter of the book. The bit about why the pill the hero cut open was empty was glossed over, as if it was a mistake to have left in that scene, if Flood was not supposed to work, or maybe one or more of the characters were supposed to be getting a placebo but the rest of that thread didn't make the editor's cuts.
In short, there was plenty of action, and so long as I just kept reading non-stop, it was ok, but if I took a break it was hard to buy in to the story again once I returned to the book. I liked the twist at the end, but it seemed to be just tacked on at the end, rather than built in to the story all along.

Not a great read. I finished it but can't recommend it.

good writing and character protrayal. convuluted plot is complex to point of confusion due to many names (and aliasis) plus double crossing by some of them. there is action on virtually every page.

Miles was a private investigator in his past life – life before he was taken into witness protection program. Celeste is a gifted programmer that had some truly traumatic experiences. Allison is a psychiatrist that is treating both of them (of course unknown to them both) - after her office is bombed, chain of events is triggered that will bring Miles and Celeste together while they try to figure out why are there being followed by a sociopath killer bend on finding missing data – presumably stolen from the top secret facility by their therapist. Now, all this seems as a rather standard “thriller” story, am I right? But wait, there is more - catch here is that both Miles and Celeste are suffering from severe trauma, PTSD, and have some serious issues to deal with. They need doctor’s help and they need it quick because placed under stress of being hunted down they themselves do not know what their reaction will be like. From the first page to the last action is non stop. Great thriller – second Abbott’s book I read so far (and made me hunting for the rest :))Recommended.
