    Mark Shulman

    Mark Shulman has been a camp counselor, a radio announcer, a maitre d' in a fancy restaurant, a New York City tour guide, and a creative advertising guy. He's written many books about many things--sharks, storms, robots, palindromes, gorillas, dodo birds, Star Wars, Ben Franklin, how to hide stuff, how to voodoo your enemies, and how to make a video from start to finish. He's written picture books for Oscar de la Hoya (the boxer) and Shamu (the whale). Mark is from Rochester and Buffalo, New York, but he has lived in New York City for so very long that he tawks like he's from da Bronx. So do his kids. His wife Kara, a grade school reading specialist, has perfect diction.

      This book is an action packed, a million miles a minute thrill ride of wish fulfillment. Most of it is a lot of fun and they manage to squeeze a lot of educational facts in. It can be repetitive at times and the twin tirades are a bit much when you're listening to it on audiobook; I suspect that they're less irritating on paper. The kids aren't super well developed but with such a crazy plot it's not a huge deal provided that they do some character development in future books.

      I'm not going to lie that I found the lack of grief on the part of the kids who believed that their parents are dead really disturbing. It just seems to me that there should be a little bit more gravitas regarding all that or a time jump that allows for the processing of grief or something just to accommodate the feelings that they should be experiencing.

      This is a fun children's book about four children whose parents are treasure hunters. Their parents go missing and the children, using clues that their parents have left them, must find missing treasures that will help them rescue their parents. It's funny, cute, and action-packed! I'd recommend it for 3rd-5th grades. It has about 450 pages, but lots of cute pictures and a very fast read! It would be a lot of fun to read with your child or grandchild!

      Very disappointed in the "fat shaming" in this book. Way too much of it. Calling one of the sisters "Chubba-Wubba", "Shamu", and "the fat chick" really felt like the wrong type of dialogue for a children's book. Especially the age of the children that this books seems marketed too. Pretty offensive.And those “Twin Tirades” were very annoying! Really, most of the book is annoying. I get that it would be cool for four kids to be on their own on a treasure hunting ship, but this was so unbelievable and non-sensical, that it felt like a dumbing down of every kid's adventure book every written. I will say, this is definitely geared to Patterson fans, as the chapters are extremely short, and simply written. 70 chapters? I guess he has to get this fan base ready for his "adult" co-works. p.s. - I know this is a children's book, but it could easily be used for a drinking game! The author(s) use the name of "The Room" more often than the "f" word is used in the movie "Midnight Run"! If you drink when you see those words, well, you ain't making it very far in these pages!
