About this audiobook

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, she doesn't realize that paranormal forces are responsible – not until mysterious identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into her room and destroy a deadly spirit sent to kill her.

Kennedy learns that her mother's death was no accident, and now she has to take her place in the Legion of the Black Dove – a secret society whose five members were all murdered on the same night, leaving the Legion in the hands of the next generation: a misfit group with unique skills.

As the new members race to find the only weapon capable of destroying the demon, they use their individual talents to battle paranormal entities and earn their rightful place in the Legion – except for Kennedy. If she is truly the missing piece of the puzzle, can she stay alive long enough to find out – without losing her heart in the process?

Protect Yourself. What you can't see CAN hurt you.

I missed a lot of what was going on because I just can't focus on audiobooks that I haven't read in print before. I tried this one as an experiment. However, the parts that I did pay attention to I really liked. It had some similarities to Supernatural which I loved. I also enjoyed Candice Accola's narration. I

I enjoyed this book for the most part. It felt very derivative of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural (the character Jared sort of became Sam Winchester in my head). The characters were honestly the weakest point of the book. I felt that Garcia sort of worked off archetypes more than creating her own characters. None of the characters had their own unique voice which was a little disappointing having read her work on the Beautiful Creatures series. The plot of the book was not overly complex but was exciting and moved incredibly fast. I loved how great she was at describing action and moving the story forward without stalling out. I am actually looking forward to the next in the series. If it's anything like this one, it will be a fun weekend read.

I picked up Unbreakable by Kami Garcia because it was just that...it was written by Kami Garcia co-author of The Beautiful Creature series that I love. I was so excited to read something new by her and the this book did not disappoint. I was hooked from the first page and the life Kennedy Waters found herself in. After the tragic death of her mother secrets begin to come out that may or may not be the key to her mother's past and to her very own future. I adore everything paranormal and throwing in some interesting romance makes it all the better. Unbreakable is the first book in a series and I can't wait to read the next book.

Totally spooky premise without taking over the plot. Looks to be a great series, especially for teen girls who love both horror and romance. Audio reading was fantastic! Spooky music was a nice touch.

On the whole, a pretty decent read. I get tired of the self-absorbed angst-ridden low self-confidence teen, but I have to admit, Kennedy has pretty good reasons for it. Fast paced, ghost centered creepy adventure. A little romance, a little team spirit. I'm thinking if you dig Cassandra Clare, you will probably like this a lot, too.

Unbreakable is the first book in the Legion series. It was a good introduction to the characters and the problem that the main character, Kennedy, and the other Legion members face. Though the book does not have the depth of description and the gothic feel that Beautiful Creatures series had, it is fast paced and full of action that never stops. The characters are likable and interesting. I'm anxious to read the next book in the series to know what happens next.

I would give this 3.5. It was an ok story. I did enjoy it, but I don't see myself continuing this series either. It is about a girl named Kennedy who's mother was killed by a ghost. When the ghost comes for her next, this group of kids show up to save her and explain that she is part of this thing called the Legion that is meant to protect the world. There's a lot of ghost hunting and spooky aspects. There are definitely some creepy parts in the book. Like I said, I enjoyed it, but it just isn't my style. If you like ghost story books then you would like this.

I was hooked. It is one those books that you can't put down until the end. Also, the book was interesting the whole time, there wasn't a part where I thought that I was too tired to read it or that it was too boring. It kept me in its claws until the very end and beyond that. I can't wait to read more about what happens to Kennedy or the other four kids who came close to my heart during the book. It was just perfect!

One of the authors said it's romance was "to die for".
Not so for me but the rest of the story was quite good.
I loved the graphics!!! It enabled me to really see the described mark or drawing.

This was a fun, ghostbuster adventure that at times reminded me of how I felt the first time I watched The Goonies. I thought the storyline was great and just as impressive as Beautiful Creatures (which I loved)! The characters, however, could have been a little more developed for me. Overall, I think this was a great start to a promising new series and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Contemporary, Paranormal, Young AdultKennedy Waters never believed in ghosts. When Kennedy finds her mother dead she never thought paranormal forces were responsible. That is until she is almost killed by a ghost but is saved in time by Jared and Lukas Lockhart, mysterious identical twin brothers. They destroyed the spirit sent to kill her when they break into her room. Kennedy learns the truth about her mother, and the fact that her death was no accident. Now Kennedy needs to take her place in the Legion of the Black Dove. It is a society of ghost hunters that first came together to protect the world from a vengeful demon. It is society made up of five members. Though all the members died on the same night so now the society is in the hands of the next generation, a misfit group of five teenagers. Each with a unique set of skills. The new members are in a race to find the only weapon that is capable of destroying the demon. They need to use their individual talents by battling pararnormal entities so that they can earn their place in the Legion. Their rightful place. The only exception seems to be Kennedy. She needs to stay alive long enough to see if she is truly the missing piece of the puzzle. But can she do it without losing her heart in the process? This is a book that puts a unique spin on ghost stories. The plot is very different and makes for a book that is hard to put down. The world building is fascinating and unique. The characters are interesting and move the story line along very well and with plenty of action it makes for a great read. It is a young adult story that is great for readers of all ages. It will also have readers eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. It has a great mystery woven throughout the book. It does leave some of the story line hanging and with a somewhat of a cliff hanger at the end it still proves to be irresistible. If the other books prove to be this good this is going to be a series of books that will be worth taking the time out to read.

Thanks to Netgalley.com and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for allowing me access to this title.

    3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed the Caster Chronicles, and I was hoping for something just as unique here. This is an interesting supernatural story of demons and demon hunters, ghosts, both evil and benign, and a girl who thought she had a normal life that turns out to be anything but.

I think fans of Garcia's previous work will enjoy this as well.

Shortly after Kennedy's mother dies, she is attacked by a spirit. She is saved by twin brothers who inform her that she is part of a group, the Legion, who have been holding a demon at bay for centuries. So now she is on the run with a group of 5 teens, trying to stop this demon from escaping his trap. I have seen several reviews comparing this book to Supernatural, one of my favorite TV shows. I sort of get it, but in this book Kennedy is definitely the lead. She is the odd man out. The one who knows nothing of her strange heritage, if it even is her heritage (she has her doubts). As happens with first books in a series, there is a lot of exposition. But there is also action to make up for the slow parts. I expect the next book to be smoother, and I do want to know what happens next. I found myself getting attached in my own way to each of the ragtag team.

Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC!
This was a fun paranormal ride! Ghosts and demons, deception and mystery all wrapped up in one heck of a story.
My fave were the ghost scenes that gave me chills!
I cannot wait to see what happens to Kennedy in the next installment, not to mention Jared, Lukas, Priest and Alara.

This book sucked me in and kept my attention. It's about a girl who's lost her mother and is about to move and lose everything that's familiar to her. She's rescued from a dangerous ghost by a group of teens who say she's special and that she's one of them. How could she resist joining them and being part of something important? But is she really one of them and are they all doing the right thing?

I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.

Kennedy narrowly escapes the vengeful demon that possessed her cat and killed her mother. Now thrown into a group known as the Legion, Kennedy is fighting demons in search of pieces to a weapon of destruction against the demons. Kind of reminiscent of "Mortal Instruments" series.

Kami Garcia writes a novel about an ancient society whose sole purpose is to protect the world from a vengeful demon.Kennedy Waters has a pretty nice life cooking with her mother and hanging with her best friend. All changes when she comes home one night and finds her mother dead. The death is attributed to a heart attack. On her last night in her home, Kennedy convinces her best friend Elle to let her stay in her house one last night before leaving for boarding school instead of staying at Elle's house. She wakes up barely able to breathe with her cat possessed. Two twins burst into her room and rescue her, spiriting her away. Her house looks like a major crime has occurred and Kennedy has disappeared, so her picture is on the news and she is presumed kidnapped.Kennedy is now with the twins, Jared and Lukas, as well as other members of the Legion. She learns that they each descend from a secret society formed centuries ago. Each member selects a family member to carry on the legacy. Kennedy's mom was a member who refused to participate, so Kennedy has not been trained. The Legion explain that the demon was accidentally released and they have contained him for centuries. He's gotten clever and killed each of their family members on the same night, explaining her mom's death. He almost killed Kennedy as well. They now have to figure out how to contain the demon. You'll enjoy this novel. It is a book one, so it doesn't end. In fact, the ending is a bit of a cliff hanger. There's lots of action and interesting characters, keeping you interested throughout the novel easily.

Though I never actually read Beautiful Creatures, I did watch the movie, which I enjoyed, and when the opportunity to read Unbreakable came up I couldn't resist. This is the start of a new paranormal YA series by Kami Garcia featuring a group of teenagers who have inherited their position in the Legion, a centuries old secret society formed to fight evil. Kennedy Waters had no idea that the supernatural existed until a vengeance ghost killed her mom and then tried to kill her. Rescued by twin brothers, Lukas and Jared, Kennedy learns of the Legion inheritance they share, along with 'Priest' and Alara, and the demon, Aras, they must destroy.Unbreakable sets a good pace, with plenty of action and tense moments, as first Kennedy and her mom are attacked and then as the Legion is confronted by more vengeful spirits as they hunt down the pieces of an ocular device which may help destroy Aras.I like Garcia's world building, Unbreakable is set in a contemporary time period where the supernatural remains hidden. The elements of good and evil, the Legion vs Aras, are quickly established with simple detail in a way that mostly avoids any info-dumping. Aras is capable of influencing spirits who can in turn possess animals, objects and places and the members of the Legion are essentially charged with exorcising spirits using charms, symbols, holy water, salt bullets or cold iron - whatever works. The Legion members have grown up aware of their heritage, training and developing specialist skills, so Kennedy feels she is a liability, unable to offer the group anything. She can't believe her mother led a double life, nor can she see the value of her rather singular talent, and as such is convinced she can't possibly be who they think she is.A huge part of Kennedy's personality stems from being abandoned by her father at age five which leads to intermittent whining about not being special, everyone leaving her etc etc - the usual self centered teen angst. This being YA, a love triangle is (sadly) inevitable, with twins Jared and Lukas both smitten by Kennedy. Thankfully it is played down somewhat as the characters are usually too busy ghost busting to gaze longingly at one another, but Kennedy does have a preference, a kiss is shared and love all but declared within days.I do like the other characters in Unbreakable, particularly Priest who is the engineering geek and the youngest of the group at fifteen. Lukas and Jared are seventeen and gorgeous (of course). Lukas sees patterns in information (mathematics) while Jared is the weaponry expert. Alara, a trust fund baby, is familiar with voodoo, and the Legion's specialist in alchemy. There is a lot of fleshing out required to develop these characters but the potential is there to be exploited.Unbreakable is a good start for a new series and though I liked the plot more than the characters, overall it was a quick and entertaining read and I'm interested in what happens next.

I never read paranormal books, and started this one to do a review for a local book store. Never again will I question a genre. This was an awesome read and I stayed up until the wee hours to finish it. When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. The author, Kami Garcia, starts to introduce spirits at once and identical twins, Jared and Lukas Lockhart are there to protect our protagonist. A secret society is also involved, a gathering of 5 members who were all murdered on the same night. Can Kennedy take her mom's place int he secret Legion, and will the twins trust her to allow her to help them battle the deadly spirits? Suspense, romance, paranormal...what more do you want in an exciting and chilling book. This is the first book in a new series from Ms. Garcia, best selling coauthor of the BEAUTIFUL CREATURES novels. Don't miss getting this book, not only for yourself, but for all of your friends who like a book of darkness and light. I heartily recommend this book and suggest that you might want to start your Christmas buying now, .

I enjoyed this first book in a new paranormal series by Kami Garcia. The main character is Kennedy Waters whose world is shaken up when she finds her mother dead and learns that she was killed by a ghost. She soon meets four other young people - Jared and Lukas Lockhart, Priest, and Aleta - who also lost people close to them at the same time Kennedy's mother was killed. She first meets Jared and Lukas when they break into her house and save her life from the same revenge spirit that took her mother's life. They introduce her to a world of demons, spirits, and a society that is determined to battle them. They, along with Aleta and Priest, and the current members of the Legion and tell Kennedy that she is too. While the other four knew about the Legion and were trained to be the successors in this generation, Kennedy had never heard of it. This lack of knowledge causes her to make dangerous mistakes and to doubt that she really has a place among the others. Since she has already been abandoned by her father and lost her mother so suddenly, Kennedy has real issues with abandonment and with feeling any sort of belonging. This story has the group trying to reassemble an "ocular device" which they hope can be used to destroy the demon who is controlling the spirits who, besides killing the previous members of the Legion, are causing outbreaks of violence in the human world. In order to collect all the pieces, they have to travel to five haunted sites and battle the ghosts who are guarding the pieces. The descriptions of the various ghosts and haunted places were chilling. I can't wait to find out what happens next for Kennedy, Jared, Lukas, Priest and Aleta.
