This book captures all of the classic elements that you expect from a mystery. I found myself guessing who did it as each page and chapter got me closer to the end. An excellent strong heroine that inevitably is the only intelligent person who is able to solve this mystery. Well written and I'm looking forward to reading another book featuring Grace.

Grace Wheaton and several other new staffers have been brought in to catapult Marshfield Manor into the modern world. It’s a stately mansion with a luxury hotel on the grounds – a tourist Mecca filled with valuable antiques and artifacts. Grace is an assistant curator who hopes someday move into the top job now held by her boss, Abe. But when Abe is murdered, Grace moves quickly to fill the void his death leaves. The manor’s owner, Bennett Marshfield, isn’t so sure someone of Grace’s youth can handle the job, even on an interim basis. But no one else steps forward, so Bennett agrees. But he reminds Grace she’s still within her probationary period. The small police force in Emberstowne seems to be in over its head investigating a murder. Their putting the solution of Abe’s murder on the back burner doesn’t set well with Grace. She knows that until Abe’s murderer is apprehended, the future of Marshfield Manor remains in limbo. And she wants to get on to the business of proving she’s the one Bennett can trust with Marshfield Manor. But she’s saddled with the assistant from hell, Frances, who’s been at Marshfield Manor forever, and a staff that seems terrified of her. This new mystery series is authored by Julie Hyzy, whose White House Chef mysteries are among my favorites. Although I don’t believe Grace is quite as interesting a character as Ollie Paras, Grace under Pressure is blessed with a great cast of supporting characters, a terrific setting and a premise that promises to have “legs.” I hope so. I also like the secondary plots interwoven – a Ponzi scheme, a nasty hotel guest, Grace’s troubles with her own house -- into the main story. I especially like Grace’s rooting around in her own past to discover why her ties to Marshfield Manor are so strong.

Great book, but the fact that it didn't say where the manor was (Virginia?) drove me nuts! ;-)

I enjoyed this novel but perhaps because I discovered the Book Retreat Mysteries Series by Ellery Adams first, I chose "liked it" rather than "really liked it." There seemed to be many similarities in my mind between reading about Storyton Hall (the storybook resort tucked away in the rolling hills of rural western Virginia) as created by Ellery Adams and Marshfield Manor (part mansion and part museum in the town of Emberstowne, a quaint tourist town in the hills of North Carolina). Jane Steward is Resort Manager at Storyton and Grace Wheaton is Assistant Curator at the manor.

The supporting characters of Marshfield Manor are interesting to meet. Grace's roommates actually reminded me of Scarlett Parker and Vivian (Viv) Tremont's neighbors in The Hat Shop Mystery series written by Jenn McKinlay. Nick is a dentist and Andre is a photographer and they're always creating wonderful dinners for Scarlett and Vivian while Grace's roommates seem to care for her by ensuring she has their best glass of wine to relax after a stressful day at the manor.

I probably will not continue reading this series but truly it's only because I have so many new novelists to discover and I'll continue reading about Storyton Hall as who can resist a thoughts of a book retreat getaway.

Great start to hopefully a long series. I enjoyed the main character grace but felt that she should have been much stern with her "new" assistant, Frances. She was over the top rude and horrid behavior - I would never put up with it.

Their were a few open ended story lines including her younger sister and Grace's fiancé running off together and getting married, and of course the hunky Jack Embers. There always is a hunky young thing with a soap opera style name.

I will definitely read further into the series of this. Loved the setting of a beautiful mansion manor, however don't remember hearing where it exactly is in the US.

Grace Under Pressure (Manor House Mystery, #1) Julie HyzyGrace Wheaton becomes the Curator of Marshfield Manor after Abe (the Curator) ends up dead. Millionaire Bennett Marshfield is her boss and owner of The Manor. He gets threatening letters demanding money or else. Grace begins her own investigation as she tries to protect her Boss as well.A fast paced murder mystery with a classic who-done-it plot. There are many suspects, with plot twists, family secrets and well developed characters. Grace is very likable, she is devoted to her job and Boss. Overall I found Grace Under Pressure enjoyable and feel those who like a cozy murder/mystery will enjoy it as well.

Grace Wheaton’s lifelong dream has been to work at Marshfield Manor, the estate of millionaire Bennett Marshfield. Having returned to Emberstowne from New York to care for her dying mother, Grace is now the owner of a dilapidated “painted lady” Victorian and still on probation at her new job as assistant curator of the historic mansion. When curator and estate director Abe Vargas is murdered however, suddenly the new employee is tasked with organizing the mansion staff. And she also takes on some private sleuthing to help the police with the investigation.

This is a decent cozy mystery (first in a series). Grace is a likeable character – intelligent, resourceful, tenacious, and methodical. She does take a few unnecessary chances and doesn’t always recognize the dangerous situations she encounters until it is nearly too late. At least she gets herself out of any jams, rather than rely on a strong, handsome man to rescue her. There’s a hint of a developing romance, but that’s all it is, a hint. There are also stories relating to her family background and her contentious relationship with her sister that are bound to be further explored as the series continues.

This book was a lot of fun! I like Julie Hyzy's White House chef series and I believe I will be loving this series just as much.

Grace has gotten a job at her dream location, she is the assistant curator for a fancy manor house in her home town that her mother used to bring to her visit on a regular basis. When the curator is found dead Grace has to step up to the plate and try and run the house while trying to find the killer, keep her own house from falling apart, keep her renters solvent and recover from the abandonment of her former fiance.

This books just moves right along, I read it in two days which translates to two evenings during the work week.

I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

I loved 'Grace Under Pressure" by Julie Hyzy! It reminds me of when I used to go up to the attic when I was a kid and look for whatever I could find. I appreciated Grace Wheaton's love for love for the history and architectural richness of old buildings. The other characters were a delight too. Bennett Marshfield, the last male of a long line of Marshfields was very old school but also very understanding. One character by the name of Rooney Tooney was very quirky and bothersome but also very sensitive.A murder leads in the mansion leads to an investigation by two very incompetent investigators. Sometimes you wonder how they got their jobs. Grace realizes that they will not make any progress in the case in the manner that they were investigating and she wants to find the murder. She finds out that her family secrets, the Mansifield secrets and even the mansions secrets must be revealed. Which set of secrets are most useful to detect the murderer?I will soon be reading the next installment in this series, "Grace Interrupted" and really want to read her other series, "The White House Chef Series.I recommend this book to all cozy lovers.

In Hyzy’s mystery novel, Bennett Marshfield is wealthy and in demand—by everyone wanting a piece of his assets. Owner of the Marshfield Manor, he trusts no one. When his friend and associate, Abe is murdered things take a turn for the worst.Grace Wheaton has spent her life wanting to work at the Manor and now she is finally following in the footsteps of her grandmother who originally introduced her to the Manor, sparking her interest to begin with. In the wake of Abe’s murder, she steps up to the challenge of assuming his role and duties. When a stalker enters the picture, Grace and groundskeeper Jack Embers do their best to protect the place and the people they love.Grace is a strong heroine and very refreshing. A Manor House Mystery is a delight for lovers of mystery.

This was overall a very pleasant cozy mystery. I enjoyed my time reading it, but after I finished, very little sticks with me.Hmm.I liked Grace, the story's lead character. I particularly enjoyed her interest/obsession with the Marshfield Manor. On the other hand, I have mixed feelings about her family's history with the Manor and its inhabitants. I can't even say why, just that it didn't settle well.Grace's gung-ho approach to her job and the murder investigation were what made the book work, both as far as moving the story along and making i fun to read.None of the characters really popped to life for me. Grace had some texture and interest as a , but the rest of the characters seemed flat, amusing but not quite funny enough to be caricatures. The two gay roommates, the nosy office secretary, the good looking gardener (I mean landscape designer), the overworked detectives, the overzealous private eye... Everything fit together to make this a pleasant read. I'm interested in the way the pieces fit together to set up for future books, so I'll probably pick up the next one, and see how it goes.

The book begins abruptly, with a huge disturbance during tea time at Marshfield Manor. Grace Wheaton, still in her first 90 days of employment at her dream job, manages to smooth things over what winds up being a distraction while murder occurs elsewhere in the Manor. Turns out the owner of Marshfield Manor, millionaire Bennett Marshfield, has been receiving threats. I really liked the characters Hyzy included in this new series, it seems to be in the vein of a very classic cozy. I look forward to this summer, when the next one comes out!

Grace Under Pressure by Julie HyzyPublished by The Penguin GroupISBN: 978-0-425-23521-8At the request of Kaye Publicity, a PB was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion. Synopsis (back of book): Everyone wants a piece of millionaire Bennett Marshfield, owner of Marshfield Manor, and letters are coming in daily from those claiming to be poor relations. The elderly, reclusive heir trusts no one but his aged curator, Abe. But when Abe is killed in a case of mistaken identity, the tide changes... Although shaken by the murder, Grace Wheaton, whose lifelong dream has been to work at the manor, steps up to the challenge of assuming Abe's job. But now some of the letters arriving for Bennett have taken a nasty turn, demanding millions-or else. When an uninvited stalker shows up at the manor and at Grace's home, she and handsome grounds-keeper Jack Embers must protect their dear old Marshfield. But to do this, they'll have to investigate a botched Ponzi scheme, some torrid Wheaton family secrets-and sour grapes out for revenge. My Thoughts and Opinion: This is the first book of Ms. Hyzy's Manor House Mystery series and the first book that I read by this author. I thought that this would be a cozy mystery and that I would probably figure out the "who did it" person relatively early. But I was wrong on both accounts. From the first chapter, where assistant curator, Grace Wheaton, handles a disturbance that takes place in the Bird Cage Tea Room, while a murder takes place in the private living quarters. To the last chapters where the "who did it" person was revealed, flowed so smoothly but with a page turning suspenseful plot. Grace takes control, jumping into the head curator's position and also trying to assist the small town police department in the hunt for a murderer. Ms. Hyzy introduces a cast of characters with quirky behaviors, which any one of them could be the murderer, but was surprised as to who it was. Along the way she also discovers secret passageways, a Ponzi scheme, which the owner of Marshfield Manor is involved in, in some way and even some very personal family secrets. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading Grace Under Pressure and will look forward to the next book in this series. Ms Julie Hyzy was "Guest Author" on this blog on July 14th. Grace Under Pressure by Julie Hyzy was an impulse buy for me. I had not read any of her other books, but liked the cover and thought I would give this one a try. It was money well spent. Grace Wheaton has always loved Marshfield Manor, the 150-room mansion in her hometown of Emberstowne. After returning home to take care of her ill mother, she takes a job at the assistant curator at the Manor. The story opens with a wild man rampaging through the tearoom in search of a hamburger. Grace handles this situation with, well quiet grace, but she is soon rattled by the shooting death of the curator. Was the crazed hamburger man, just a coincidence or a distraction to give the murderer his opportunity to kill? With the curator gone and everything in an uproar, Grace steps up to the plate to keep everything running smoothly and help the authorities solve the case. Grace must deal with a staff that is not sure they can trust her, including an assistant who is not only convinced she can do better than Grace, but is also a top busybody. There’s a crazy private investigator who keeps sneaking in and out of the manor and a hotel guest who is not only out to stick the manor for an expensive hotel stay, but is intent on scamming Grace’s two roommates who own the local wine shop. There is a great deal going on in this book. Grace not only has to figure the secrets of Marshfield Manor but must solve some family secrets as well. Some reviewers have complained that the pacing in this book was too slow. I believe it is just right. It’s not an on the edge of your seat thriller, but it is a very nice cozy read. Things move along at just the right pace to keep the reader interested without moving so quickly that details get lost.I’m looking forward to learning more about Grace, Bennett Marshfield – owner of Marshfield Manor and the other residents of Emberstowne.

The first in a new series by Julie Hyzy (author of the White House Chef Mysteries) introduces us to Grace Wheaton. As a child in Emberstowne, Grace had always loved nearby Marshfield Manor, part home, part museum. Now, she's the assistant curator there, the job of her dreams. When a large young man causes a ruckus in the restaurant attached to the Manor, Grace is called to deal with the situation. Little does she know that his outburst is just a distraction to cover up the shooting of another staff member, the head curator. The small police contingent of Emberstowne is overwhelmed by dealing with the murder case and other problems in the tourist town.Grace realizes that she's the next-in-command and takes charge of the situation, dealing with police, staff and the Manor's owner, Bennett Marshfield. Marshfield recently testified in the trial of a Ponzi schemer, and she's sure the murderer mistook the curator for his employer. She enlists the private investigation agency that the Manor keeps on retainer. The rest of the staff, older and more staid, don't look kindly on the young woman taking over and as a result many of them deliberately hinder the investigations.Like Ollie, the protagonist of the White House Chef series, Grace is a well-drawn independent female. Other major characters in the book, like Bennett Marshfield and Grace's tenants Bruce and Scott, are more sparingly sketched, but still enough for the reader to get a taste of them, and want more.*Review copy received from the publisher.
