About this audiobook

For journalist Dylan Alexander, it began with the discovery of a hidden tomb, thrusting her into the center of a gathering storm of violence and secrets. But nothing is as dangerous as the scarred, lethally seductive man who rises from the shadows to draw her into his world of dark desire and endless night.

Fueled by pain and rage over a shattering betrayal, the warrior Rio has pledged his life to the war against the Rogues. He will let nothing stand in his way-least of all a mortal woman with the power to expose the entire vampire race. For an ancient evil has been awakened, and a stunning darkness is on the rise. Suddenly, Dylan is powerless to resist Rio's touch, even as she uncovers a shocking link to her own past. And now she must choose: Leave Rio's midnight realm, or risk it all for the man who has shown her true passion and the infinite pleasures of the heart.

After reading one of the reviews of this book here on GR, I was really worried that I wasn't going to like Dylan, but aside from thinking she asks too many questions (he didn't answer the first 20 so why does she think he's going to answer any of them? I know she's a reporter, but it got a little ridiculous), I liked her.

In the first book of Adrian's Midnight Breed series, Kiss of Midnight, the seemingly happily mated couple, Rio & Eva, meet a tragic ending. Eva betrays Rio and the rest of his brothers in arms, bringing about her own death and leaving Rio severely scarred- emotionally and physically.A short time later, where Midnight Rising picks up, Rio is tired of his miserable existence. At the end of a dangerous mission in the mountains of Prague, the Warriors discover an ancient, empty crypt which once hibernated a malevolent originator of their species. Rio volunteers to stay behind and blow away the evidence. Only the rest of the warriors don't know he means to blow himself up too. Weeks after they leave Rio alone with the purpose of destroying the evidence, both he and the crypt are still intact, but he's ready to do the deed that very night.Until an intrepid reporter stumbles upon the lair and snaps some pictures before escaping. Weak from starvation and madness, Rio pulls it together enough to go after the girl. Disgusted to find she's a reporter ready to tell all, he captures her only to realize she's already sent the photos off to not only her editor but also some family and friends.Taking her with him to a safe haven in Germany, she fights him tooth and nail yet something about this fierce, beautiful young woman draws him out of his pain. But when he discovers she's part of a rare group of women who have the exact genetic makeup to effectively mate with the half alien/half human Vampires known as the Breeds, things get even more difficult between them. The last thing Riowants is to be connected to another woman, and he means to leave this one behind- to get back to dying.Dylan cannot believe the world she's stumbled into, but part of her realizes what the scarred, tortured man before her is saying is true. She agrees to join him on a journey back to his home in the United States to clear up the mess she inadvertently made when she sent her pictures to her editor. In the end, she has o choice, for not only is Rio's world threatening her family and her very existence, but something about Rio makes her want to see him whole again.I was surprised Adrian came up with Rio's story so early on in the series. At the end of Kiss of Midnight he was utterly wrecked by Eva's betrayal. Rio starts off the novel suicidal and ready to give up, but before the climax even hits, he's telling Dylan he loves her and he's can't live without her?! Not that I read paranormal romance for it's basis on reality :-) - but this fantastical improbability is the very reason I had issues with Midnight Rising.Still, I liked Dylan a lot. She was feisty and not easily swayed, and she was ready to give up the love she had for Rio in order to be with her ailing mother. She had alotta heart and I adore that in a heroine.I also really liked Rio, considering his unlikely speedy recovery. A capacity to forgive and love again, so deeply-so quickly, is an admirable thing- if a bit far-fetched, in my jaded eyes. And, believe me, this one is all about the easy happily ever after- despite the blood sucking Vampire/Alien aspect.I'm also diggin' the whole Alien Breed progenitor bad guy aspect and the thriller plots it gives to this set of books. So, given the whole, I did enjoy this novel.

Summary Rio, is still shattered from grief and pain and the loss of betrayal from his mate. He has fought long and hard against fighting evil, and will do anything to protect the men he fights with. An ancient evil has been released, and Rio is in the process of destroying the chamber and the evidence, and also to bury himself in the rubble. Journalist, Dylan Alexander, is traveling in Europe with friends, and working on a story. Dylan has psychic abilities that are almost a curse, but this ability leads her to a hidden tomb with ancient writing and a sense of evil that permeates the room. She stumbles across a dangerous creature, a man that is scarred and full of pain and a being she can’t resist no matter the danger. Rio and Dylan are drawn together, by danger and passion. Dylan is the key to finding the answers in the search for this ancient evil, but also in the disappearance of breeds. But there is an enemy, an enemy that is hunting for Dylan and only Rio will be strong enough to protect her.The Hero Rio is a Breed Warrior, and to many of their kind he isn’t looked upon in favor. Rio is the most loyal and fierce of them all. Rio was mated, but his mate Eve betrayed him and his warrior brethren and Rio is bitter and angry and full of hatred. Rio is both scarred physically and emotionally. He hasn’t had it easy, and the pain is almost overwhelming for Rio. He has demons that he has to face. Rio has the who “tortured hero” down pat. Rio has really been struggling and we have seen this in previous books. Its been heartbreaking to see his character and the way he struggles with the pain and grief. Rio is a character that you just reach towards, he has a past that haunts him even before Eve. He is just about ready to give up on living until he meets our heroine who is like a breath of fresh air for him. We see a slow change in Rio, see him have hope and seeing his character heal. I admired Rio for his strength of character, his loyalty and devotion to doing the right thing no matter how much it hurts. The Heroine Dylan Alexander has a certain psychic ability. She can see ghosts of young women. Dylan has seen this since she was a little girl. They speak to her, but she can’t communicate anything with them. Her father left them when she was young, and her mother is the only one in her family that has stayed with her, accepted her, and loved her unconditionally. Dylan is a journalist, but she was betrayed by a source and lost her job. Her current work isn’t exactly what she has dreamed of writing about aliens and myths, but when she discovers a hidden tomb she knows she has something legit and really could make her career. Dylan was a different heroine that I was expecting. She is driven, but also compassionate and has such an open heart. I really connected with her character because she has such a down to earth personality that you instantly are drawn to. She is a fighter too and will do anything for her mother.Plot and Story Line Midnight Rising was such a wonderful story and ever since we see what Eve did to Rio in the previous books, I have been waiting for his story. Probably because Rio at first is such a carefree and fun loving warrior. Probably out of all of them, he is more lighthearted and fun. But then we see such a horrid change, where he is full of pain and hate. I have been so excited to see him get a happy ending and Dylan was everything and more that Rio needs. Midnight Rising follows a few months after Midnight Awakening ends. Rio has fallen off the map from his brethren, keeping secrets and keeping to himself. We also see a new and more dangerous evil that is in the works. And what is revealed in this book, was quite a shock and a new twist I was expecting. There is a thread left at the end of Midnight Rising that leaves us hanging just a bit but has a more “Happy For Now” type theme. Which I am okay with, because the ending feels more between a Happy For Now and a Happy Ever After type ending. Mostly due to the danger and the evil that is trying to undermine all the good these Warriors have been trying to accomplish. The actual romance between Rio and Dylan was so sweet at times, but quite a battle in other ways as well. At first their relationship is strained, but they have a connection with each other and that connection slowly builds in strength and in healing. Both Rio and Dylan help each other emotionally. You are pure flame. I touch you and I ignite. I kiss you and I burn to have more. You consume me… like no other woman before you, and, I am certain, like no other ever could again.Their physical relationship is quite intense and provocative and I loved seeing these two spark.I have to go to her, Lucan. For my own sanity, if nothing else. If I stay here, I’m not sure what good I’d be, to tell you the truth. She’s the only thing that’s held me together in a very long time. I’m a wreck for this woman, my friend. She owns me now. What I truly enjoyed most was seeing Rio and Dylan work through the hurdles in their relationship. Now the side characters were a blast and my favorite was Niko. Niko is best friends with Rio, and we see a strain in their friendship, but Niko never loses faith in his faith and defends him quite passionately in one particular scene that probably won me over for Niko instantly. There is such depth of emotion in Midnight Rising, and I can’t wait for more. The Cover I like the green gold and teal colors, with the scene of the city and the river. Has a more exotic feel to it.Overall View Midnight Rising is a passionate and enticing romance that digs deeper on darker emotions and how miraculous love can heal. It has a full range of danger, desire, emotion, and love. TRULY EXHILIARTING.

Nice little quandary to start of the story: Dylan (the girl, yes I know) is a reporter who takes pics of Rio and a super secret cave. Rio can't have those pics come out and now since Rio messed up he has to keep Dylan with him when all he wants to do is off himself (in the previous books he is betrayed by his breedmate and scared horribly from an explosion).
Their relationship happens/progressing at warp speed, not sure why they are in "luv".
This story is just kind of more of the same. The tone and set-up felt the same, the characters just have different names. Rio and Dylan didn't make a lasting impression on me or anything.
Once again the author finishes strong with an ending that was fast paced and exciting. Liking the continuation storyline of the Ancient (original gansta', sorry, Vampire) being alive and breeding new Gen Ones.

    Synopsis:
Fueled by rage following a devastating betrayal, Rio, the most tortured of the Breed warriors, is about to succumb to his darkest thoughts when Dylan Alexander crosses his path. With the power to expose the vampire race to humanity, Dylan must ultimately choose between the life she has always known and her destiny...

    Review:
A good story but not as suspenseful or intense as Kiss of Crimson or Midnight Awakening.

Rio and Dylan are a sweet couple. Rio is the epitome of the tortured hero (for which I have a weakness) and Dylan is feisty and definitely has a will of her own. I liked how she doesn’t let Rio or Lucan walk all over her, and is wonderfully accepting of Rio’s physical and emotional flaws. Nevertheless, their romance feels a bit rushed and their chemistry is not as forceful as in the other books.

I also appreciated the differences between Dylan and the other Breedmates. While she is not as sensitive as Tess or as kick butt as Elise, she is special in her own right. To begin with, her ability is darker than those of the others and the manner in which she copes with it reflects her determined spirit. Second, she has connections to the human world that the other mates lack. Unfortunately, Adrian’s methods for severing these ties feel contrived and even predictable.

Another issue I had difficulty with is the fact that Rio seems to overcome his trust issues and fall in love with Dylan far too quickly. This is inconsistent with his characterization in the previous books where he has an intense distrust of women following Eva’s betrayal.

Perhaps it would have been better if Rio’s story came later in the series after more time had elapsed.

The plot revolving around the villain’s plans for the ancient is developing in an interesting and exceedingly diabolical way. This villain is seriously evil and in this respect surpasses those in the previous books. I look forward to seeing how this aspect of the series develops.

Overall, I enjoy the way the series is developing and will definitely continue reading.

What a lovely HEA Rio got. Out of all the warriors he so totally deserved it. His history was so tragic. And that was before Eva's betrayal. It's a wonder he didn't have more issues! This book had me tearing up more than once. When Rio swore he would wait for Dylan while she went to be with her sick mother...gods I wished he was real so I could've hugged him. His loyalty and dedication really shined through. I never ever really warmed up to Dylan. She was ok. I liked her and her bond with her mother was sweet. I'm happy she was the one to bring Rio out of his darkness, but she didn't touch me the way Elise did.

Two main things keep this from getting a higher rating. First, Adrian really has to stop with the Breedmates getting kidnapped every time they leave the compound. It's getting soooo predicatable. As soon as Dylan got in the Volvo I wondering how long it was going to take for the Big Bad to snatch her.

Secondly, I didn't like how the situation with Dylan's sick mother was resolved. It was a cheap ploy just so Dylan could go live in Boston without any attachments. Sharon deserved better than that. Even if Tess couldn't cure the cancer, she should've been moved to the compound or a nearby Darkhaven where she could be cared for and be close to Dylan for her final weeks. I'd really like to see a heroine in this series that has a life that's impossible to just break from so easily. Like a child from a previous marriage.

Even with those flaws I still found this a satisfying read. Loved Rio. Andreas is still a sexy GQMF and I can't wait for his story. In the meantime weapons expert Niko is next.

I think there's always going to be something in these books that'll keep me from rating them five stars. Here was the relationship progressed to its 'go' point and how things just sort of smoothly happened for Rio and Dylan from that point on. Oh sure, that was the bad man that went after Dylan and all that, but there wasn't a moment in this book for me that made me think 'now things are going to get all kinds of interesting'. Still, good book and I like the characters.

This is Rio’s story or should I stay the story of him finally starting to live and forgive himself. As any of us know that have read the first three books in this series Rio was injured in the first book. He and the rest of the order were betrayed by Eva, Rio’s mate at the time. Rio’s injuries were bad enough that he is left with some very bad scars on his face and torso. He also suffers for PTSD and some brain trauma. I was heartbroken when Eva revealed her duplicity. Rio was already in such misery and pain. I am surprised that he survived the whole ordeal. He is a warrior so I guess that his commitment to the others in the Order helped pull him through. This is probably the hardest book to get through. Rio is determined to end his life in the beginning of the story. He thinks that there is no place for him in the Order and he has no other purposes in his life. Even after Dylan invades the hibernation chamber he still thinks of ending his life when he has cleaned up the mess she has started. Most of Rio’s problems are from his childhood which is very dark and wretched. For so much of his younger life people called him a monster and other horrible names. He has never really gotten over that and now with the scars he feels he really is a monster. I was really happy that Dylan was able to pull him back into the land of the living and show him he still had a purpose and that someone could love him.Dylan Alexander reminds me very much of Chloe Sullivan from Smallville. Dylan is tremendously curious and inquisitive. She is always asking questions which drive Rio nuts sometimes. She is also the loving daughter that has cared for her mother most of her life. Dyaln's younger life is only marginally better than Rio’s. Her father was a drunk that was always looking for a fast buck so he could get drunk again. Her brothers left her and her mother to deal with life all on their own. Dyaln has worked as a reporter and she is very good but she has never really fit in with the rest of the world. This is one of the traits of a Breedmate. Dyaln sees dead Breedmates that are trying to get absolution. It is an interesting twist for a Breedmate power and one that I am sure leads Order to the villain that gets away in this book. This is the start of a new arc and I am sure there are going to be some wonderful stories leading up to the finale. I can’t wait to see if the Order finds that villain and all the ones that he has been gathering. I am hoping that some of the new generation will join the order and help to find the evil that is lurking in the shadows. As always there are some wonderful secondary characters in this story. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see more of the other mates and only small glimpses of the rest of the order. There are also a number of very hot love scenes. Rio and Dyaln steam up the pages with their passionate encounters.

I knew this Fasso creep is a mean mofo. Just knew it.

Great story, started off a little slow, but picked up towards chapter 10. Rio is a good one, and Dylan is freakin' awesome with her smarts and unique talent.

I did not care for this book. I wanted to; I totally did. Rio's story intrigued me, but in the end, the entire book fell flat. The basis around the whole thing - basically kidnapping when you come right down to it- followed by Dylan's growing attraction for Rio didn't sit well with me. Besides that, I found Dylan to be annoying and strongly disliked her as the heroine.

I thought I was going to hate this book, especially after the butchering of German translations that made it obvious that the author didn't bother to seek out a reliable source for authenticity's sake. Aside from that I already had an aversion to the female heroine, Dylan, who is a reporter for a cheap newspaper that prides itself on publishing stories about paranormal activities and the supernatural. In the beginning the sense one gets from Dylan is that she's only concerned with furthering her career by means of the big break. The discovery of the hibernation chamber, which was discovered at the end of Midnight Awakening, seems to be her golden ticket to fame. I have nothing against serious journalism, but it's the sensationalism of journalists who will go to any length, not caring who they hurt along the way, that really irks me. For that reason I didn't warm up to Dylan until very late in the story.
I was looking forward to Rio's story after reading about the painful tragedy that was dealt to him in the first story. The betrayal of his Breedmate, Eva, left deep scars both emotionally and physically. Then in Awakening, Tess tried to help him heal and overcome most of the damage but it seemed he'd never recover. You can't help but feel for him in this story. Not because of the fictional character but by extending the compassion to real life people who know pain and isolation because of disfiguration. Underneath scars there is always still a human being with feelings, and I think that comes across.
As for action in this story, we learn more about what happened to the mysterious Ancient that was freed and what the bigger plans are. The author doesn't shy away from mentioning some pretty gruesome themes, like rape. Though it's not detailed and graphic, be forewarned that it is implied.
All in all, this wasn't my favorite story but Dylan redeems herself in my view and Rio learns to trust again. Even Eva plays a significant role in this and I feel that lose end was wrapped up appropriately. I'm not surprised that the ending battle was a little anticlimactic. After all, the battle must continue.
I'd give this 3 stars for Dylan's involvement in the story but 4.5 just because of Rio and his strong will. He really came out as the hero in this book.

I was looking forward to this story of Rio. Midnight Rising is the fourth novel in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed vampire romance series. From the opening pages, where tabloid reporter Dylan first discovers the mysterious secluded cave half way up a Czech mountainside with its half-mad vampire occupant, Midnight Rising captures the attention and imagination of its readers and refuses to let go. Rio has a lot of problems. He was cruelly betrayed by his breedmate (Eva) during the events that occurred in Kiss of Midnight, the first novel in this series. She sold out the Breed warriors to their enemies and Rio was very badly injured in an explosion as a result. Eva took her own life when her duplicity was discovered. Rio was left with terrible physical scars and head injuries that left him prone to blackouts and bouts of rage, not to mention his emotional pain after Eva's betrayal. Half-mad with hunger and the pain of his past, Rio is a vampire on the edge of losing his will to live. Dylan soon gives him reasons to live as she shakes up his world when she discovers the ancient's hibernation chamber and tries to write a story about it and the "blood drinking demon" that locals claim is haunting the mountain. With Dylan threatening to expose the entire vampire race Rio has to concentrate on finding out what she knows and eliminating her story. In the process he must fight his own demons and rejoin his warrior Breed brethren in their battle for the future of the vampire race. I definitely think this is one to put on your "must-read" list.

Dylan Alexander shouldn't be on this trip, it should be her mother. However she's now in the Czech republic and exploring a mountain. She finds a cave with a strange man and stranger symbols, one of which is the same as her birthmark. Rio is scarred, both emotionally and physically. He's decided that life isn't worth living any more. He's failed to do his last task and it's the last bit where he wants to hold on to life that's stopping him from doing it.He does have occasional moments where I seriously wanted to tell him to get help, talk to someone, anyone. She's also going to have no fun helping him reconstruct some sort of interest in actually living, and I'd say he could be prone to serious depression. It's pretty typical of this series and this genre, nothing standout here but not a bad read.

WHOA! Another great read for my keeper shelf from Lara Adrian. I just finished this book and my heart is still racing.Dylan Alexander is on vacation in Europe. Her mother is dying and it was her wish for Dylan to take her place on this fabulous trip. Dylan's always been a little different...she can see ghosts. But they're always young and always female. She sees one while hiking on her trip and it guides her to a dark cave while whispering, "Save him."Rio is ready to die; no, he wants to die. He's tired of existing after the betrayal by his wife that left him scarred, in pain, and sometimes out of his mind. He just can't think of anything worth living for...until she walks in.I loved this book! At first I was mad, because I wanted one of the other warriors to get his breedmate. But oh, the great story of a love worth waiting for, worth sacrificing for, worth LIVING for. If you like dark, sexy, brooding heroes and saucy, self-efficient heroines...then go get this book NOW! You won't be sorry.
