Book 2 of the #1 New York Times bestselling This Man trilogy

Jesse Ward drowned her with his intensity and blindsided her with his passion, but he kept her away from his dark secrets and broken soul. Leaving him was the only way Ava O'Shea could survive. Ava is equally determined to get at the truth beneath this man's steely exterior. That means letting herself get close to the Lord of the Manor once more. Jesse and Ava have such an intensely passionate almost destructive relationship. It concerns me that Jesse uses sex to manipulate Ava and that Ava is so reluctant to confront possible areas of contention that she avoids the truth. In the real world not the book world a woman would be foolish to become involved with such a possessive man. Jesse exhibits several warning signs of a potentially abusive man. Yet, still I'm looking forward to Book 3.

What a story. I really liked the first story, This Man, but I absolutely loved Beneath This Man. The story of Jesse and Ava grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go. It's a bit of a roller coaster ride and not one you want to get off of. I'm looking forward to the final book, hoping all questions get answered.

And so the craziness continues...this time Ava was better equipped at handling Jesse. We finally learn more about him but I was shocked at how deep his issues were and his methods for dealing with them. Jesse gave me whip lash! He quickly bounced between sexy and seductive to crazy and irrational followed by broken and self destructive. "Laid back guy" my ass! More like a sneaky and manipulative sex god! We'll see how things play out for them in book 3. I'm hoping Jesse sheds the bad people in his life and the Manor for a clean shot at life with Ava.

You have to read this series in order. Beneath this man picks up where This Man ends. Jesse is not doing very well. He needs Ava but will not compromise or listen to what she has to say. Ava has to show by her actions and words that Jesse can trust her. I loved when Ava lets loose. It is only when she is over the top that Jesse can understand her because he is over the top. Ava struggles with Jesse's behavior but finally does get through to him after she behaves totally opposite of what he has come to expect of her. I applaud her for it. Jesse only understands by example. They are still an interesting couple but Ava puts up with a lot. I wish Sam or John would have told her what happened in Jesse's past but they all stand back and let her struggle with Jesse. Again the bonus chapter throws a lot of light on Jesse and his viewpoint and past.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I really liked this book. Maybe because I can see people being that stupid? Maybe because the number of lies these people tell each other makes me laugh in a "I've had people be somewhat that way with me," or maybe it was because this relationship is adorable in a messed-up sort of way. Again, I'm just not quite sure why. Anyways, I couldn't put this book down, though I was forced to at some point. Great read.

Ok, this book pissed me off in a lot of ways.

Firstly, Ava thinks all the time, but never speaks!!! She never once talks to Jesse, it's either interrogation, arguing, fighting, or fucking. There is NO communication at all!!! No wonder Jesse acts like a mother fucking moron, he's got no info to go on! She's drugged, and instead of freaking out and trying to find out what happened, she zips her lip!

Secondly, again, we have 98% of the book sex. I actually thought some of the sex scenes were good, but I found after a SHORT time, I just started skipping them, skimming for dialog to make sure the fucking twit didn't finally speak her mind while having mind melting sex. Nope.

Thirdly, there were an addition 46 references to 'lady' in this book. In the previous book I got so sick of 'lady' this and 'lady' that, that I went and edited out all references so I never had to read 'you drive me crazy mad, lady' or 'watch your mouth lady' again! There were 58 references to 'lady' in the first book!! Jesus Christ lady, WATCH YOUR word/phrase repeat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fourthly, if you keep your birth control pills in the same place (your bag) each time, and you lose them once, you think "oops misplaced them". The second time you think "what the fuck? I keep them here, where the hell are they?!" and you start thinking about what's happening to them. Third time you KNOW something is up. period. And you don't go around having that much sex and continue when you lose your pills! So irresponsible! I mean, I know it's easy to forget to take 'em for a day or two, but to go so long and not even to make an appointment to get more!

Fifthly, Ava has all these people she needs to speak with, and weeks go by and she doesn't! FRUSTRATING. She's the most uncommunicative person I've ever read about! I actually can't stand her! She's an idiot. Can't speak her mind, lets/encourages her lunatic boyfriend into acting like a brainless ape on crack, and then acts a fool herself.

Sixthly, that man Jesse is the biggest fucking hypocrite I've ever come across!!! For example, she can't talk to her ex, but he can not only talk to, but he finds it perfectly acceptable to have his come unchain him from the bed while he's naked. And when she FINALLY calls him on it, he's utterly clueless and pissed that she's full of shit. At this point, I really wanted to smash this book. Jesse is a moron. He's not 'bad at relationships,' he's a man who can't think/reason beyond the capabilities of a five year old!

Seventhly, Kate is not a good friend! She confesses at one point that she almost ditched Ava as a friend while Ava was with Matt because she had become a bore, then she's gone behind Ava's back time and time again doing Jesse's bidding. Add to that she's as tight-lipped with Ava as Ava is with everyone (except Kate). I can understand she wouldn't want to confess to her activities of late, but the degree of closed off she is makes for a NO FRIEND! She doesn't even give good advice! She's nothing but a sounding board that doesn't provide feedback.

I go back and forth between being able to 'buy' these characters and thinking they're way too over the top. And it's a good thing that I wasn't put in her situation, because I'd have serious trouble forgiving and forgetting the shit he'd done to, because, and regardless of her. I didn't like this book. I again think that the writing style is good, regardless of the word/phrase repeat ad nauseum. However, I am really fed up with their antics.

This book was not good. No, that's an understatement. This book was very bad. It wasn't the absolute worst book I've ever read, but it's pretty high up on the list of sucktastic books. There is a lot about this series that I just hate. I was hoping this book would be better than the first, but it really wasn't. The quality of writing was a bit better, but the story quality is still crap.Ava needs to get new friends. Seriously. This is a woman whose best friend is totally cool with a guy stalking her, forcing her to move in with him, and being an abusive and manipulative jerk. Kate knows that Jesse treats Ava horribly, but she's basically cheering him on with the abuse, stalking, and manipulation. I don't know why Kate hates Ava so much, but it is very clear that she does.Jesse blames his "not an alcoholic" behavior on Ava. She drives him to drink. Her leaving him drives him to spend four days downing shot after shot of vodka, so that's her fault. His sex with other women during that time period is also his fault. He's never felt like drinking so much in his life, but being with her makes him want to drink. He tells her this. His friends basically tell her this, too. This is not okay. He can't take responsibility for his self-destructive behavior, so he puts it on her. And she seems to be okay with taking the blame. It sort of makes sense, since she's also the one who is responsible for his forcible and coercive sexual actions on her. This kind of thinking is so horrifying that I just wanted to scream as I read it. That's probably why it took seven days to read this book. It isn't a hard read style-wise, it just sends the kind of message that victims of domestic violence and rape are responsible for the abuse that they face. You know, the despicable kind of thinking that we should be way past in the twenty-first century.Remember when I said the writing quality was a bit better than it was in the first book? That's true, but the writing quality is still pretty bad. There was a lot of repetitiveness. If you say that a character is dressed smartly in the first part of a paragraph, you don't have to say it again two or three sentences later. The same goes for talking about a character being in tight white boxers. It doesn't need to be repeated right away. The brand dropping was also pretty common in this book, which was very annoying. I get that she wanted to convey that Jesse lives a rather luxurious lifestyle, but mentioning all the brands was just so tacky. And the high fashion that was mentioned didn't sound very fashionable. It definitely didn't sound like the brands that were being described. The whole book was a serious disappointment. Between the tacky writing, the god-awful story, and the heavy use of tropes, the book was just not worth reading. Unless you were really into the first book, I really wouldn't recommend tackling this book. The only reason that I'm going to read the last book in the series is that I want to find out what things this group of social weirdos is going to do next. I'm guessing whatever they do, it will be horrible.

This is my second time reading Beneath This Man and I enjoyed it more this time than last time. Ms. Malpas does a fabulous job of combining drama and humor with great romance and plenty of bedroom scenes to tell a wonderful story. I totally recommend the This Man trilogy to everyone who likes a good book, but especially a great story!!

I will start by saying this: I loved it. I loved every steamy, hot, crazy minute of reading this book.

Having said that.... There are times when I wanted to reach in my kindle and shake both of them. Jesse for being so damn obsessed and Ava for giving in just because he "fucks sense into her". Their relationship is so warped, it's crazy. Even through it all, I loved it. I rooted for them, cried for them and cheered when they were good. I cringed when they were being crazy and loved them both for being so insanely in love with each other. They definitely blur the lines between love, desire and
obsession... leaning more towards obsession than the others. I am hoping that with time, they will figure out that their love for each other is strong enough for them to not have to be insanely jealous and obsessed and not have to "fix" every.single.thing with sex.

The burning question is: Is Ava pregnant? And if she is, will it strengthen or wreck their relationship? Obviously, he wants her to be pregnant, but I think it's only because he thinks that will keep her with him. Will the reality be as warm as the fantasy?

What can I say... this book was worth waiting for! Could not put it down. I just did an all nighter because I could not put it down!

You MUST read This Man first. Then, enjoy the continuing story of Ava and Jesse. This is obsession, love, madness, and very very sexy sex at its best. No spoilers here... you must read it and enjoy the discovery.

Now Jodi Ellen Malpas has raised her own "bar" of master story telling. When the last book is published later on this year, I expect a great conclusion full of romance and excitement.

    Jodi, well done!

Wow this book messed with my insides!
I couldn't put it down my heart was aching at every turn and let me tell you there were a lot of turns.
Jesse seems to have so many secrets you can't help but get worried and angry for Ava.
He seems to think what happened in the past is the past but at every turn the past is biting Ava in the ass. Every time Ava finally gets answers something else comes up that is brushed aside. I still love Jesse and I think towards the end things seem to be finally smoothing out. There is of course so much left to sort out I can't wait for book 3! Lots and Lots of hot steamy Sex.

    Quotes:

"Damn you, Jesse Ward, of an age I don't know."

"Snuggle? is he kidding me? After that? This man is like the sex version of Jekyll and Hyde."

"I crazy love you, baby. I'm glad we're friends."

    "I've trampled them all."

I am still enjoying this series, even though Jesse gets a little more controlling and domineering! For starters it's a book not reality. So I thoroughly enjoy getting tugged along in Jesse and Ava's little train wreck of a relationship. I was up until 4 this morning reading this book because I couldn't stop!! Then I moved right on to book three which I have also finished. All in all I feel it was a satisfying trilogy and one that I will probably read again and again. Most definitely one I will recommend!!

Okay, first and foremost let me just get this out there: I could not put this book down. Despite my issues with it, I was fully engaged, and actually had to wait (because I refused to put them down) until I was well into the third book in the series, before writing my review. The drama really had my breath catching and with each page turned, there was some new twist that literally had me squeezing my e-reader tighter. Yes, it was that angsty. That being said, I have a few issues with this (these) books. One, the relationship these two are in is completely unhealthy. I have never had a hero and heroine that I have disliked so much or frowned upon so much in my entire reading life. That’s saying a bit, especially since Fifty Shades wasn’t so keen on the healthy relationships either. These two did more destruction to one another, hurt, and brought out the worst in each other more than any other couple I’ve read about or known.Which leads to my second issue. One moment the heroine would be strong, standing up for something she believes in, and rightly putting the hero in his place. In the next second she’d be on her back, having sex, and nothing would be resolved. It led to another circle altogether with additional issues to arise. It was extremely frustrating and I again, a huge turn off. The last issue was the writing. There was a lot of repetition and telling in this book, and I felt as if the two took me out of the character’s heads and reminded me I was merely reading the book, not experiencing it. Outside of those issues though, again, I would say I had to keep reading, and had to see what was going to happen next. I really wish I liked these two characters more, but if I’m completely honest, the only reason I continued to turn the page was because it was like a train wreck and I couldn’t look away. I will check out more from this author in the future, although if the characters are like this, I doubt I’ll finish them. All in all, I enjoyed this read. 3.5 stars out of 5.
