About this audiobook

As a reporter for his high school newspaper, Tom Harding was tracking the best story of his life - when, suddenly, his life turned very, very weird. He woke up one morning to find his house empty...his whole town empty...empty except for an eerie fog - and whatever creatures were slowly moving toward him through the fog.

How did it happen?
Is it real?
Is he dreaming?
Has there been a zombie apocalypse?
Has he died and gone to hell?

Tom is a good reporter, but no one has ever covered a story like this before. With the fog closing in and the hungry creatures of the fog surrounding him, he has only a few hours to find out how he lost the world he knew.

Excellent book! Andrew Klavan is a tremendous writer and orator , this was honestly not a book I'd have chosen had it not been for the sample.

Well written. Well narrated. Easy to follow and gets you interested fast.
I feel like this audiobook is akin to Fight Club, meaning there are curious things through the entire story, and when you get to the end, they all make sense.
    Well worth it!

Thrilling! I loved the way imagination & reality danced in tandem, sometimes moving so quickly I wasn't sure which was which. Highly recommend!

(This review can also be found on my blog The (Mis)Adventures of a Twenty-Something Year Old Girl).

When I read the blurb to Nightmare City by Andrew Klavan, I knew it was a book I had to read! While it wasn't a fantastic read, it was still decent enough.

I think the title of this book suits it quite well. What the main character is in is a city made from his nightmares!

At first I wasn't sure if I liked the cover, but it's kind of grown on me. Now I do like it. I like how we see the monsters coming out of the fog. Definitely creepy!

I thought the world building was done really well. It has a super creepy and sinister feel about it. In fact, the world felt so real at times, it was like I was Tom.

The pacing does let the book down somewhat, I felt. For the first three quarters of the book, I felt that the pacing was a bit slow. In fact, there were times when I would just skim paragraphs as I became bored. However, the pacing did pick up in the last quarter of the book, of which I was thankful. From there until the end, I couldn't put the book down!

I thought the whole idea for the plot was interesting. It's not an original idea, but Klavan put his own spin on it making it a bit different. I'd go into more detail, but I don't want to give any spoilers away. Oh, and as for the mystery part of the book, I would've never guessed who the culprit was! There's no cliff hangers, so I believe this book may just be a stand alone.

I thought all the characters were written superbly! Though most of the book, the only character featured is Tom. Tom seemed to me like a typical 17 year old male. He likes cars and girls, but he also quests for the truth which puts his life in jeopardy. I liked how down to Earth Tom was and how he couldn't be intimidated when it came to letting the truth be known. Even though she isn't featured very much, I did like the character of Lisa. I liked how friendly she was, and I felt like she was just a very warm person. There's also the character of Marie, Tom's crush, which I liked to begin with, but I'm not going to say anything due to spoilers.

The dialogue flowed very well, as did the character interactions. Nothing felt disjointed or awkward at all. There's no swearing in this book and only mild violence.

Overall, Nightmare City is a decent read. The pacing does let it down a bit, but I think most people would like the book.

I'd recommend this book to those aged 14 who are fans of horror or those who want to be a bit creeped out.

I'd give Nightmare City by Andrew Klavan a 3.5 out of 5.

Would be a good book for a boy who does not like the typical horror book, but likes some suspense. Also deals with peer pressure.

Aha, yes I got this book the day it came out...yesterday...and searched for the one and only copy for thirty minutes in the bookstore.. :]Tom Harding, journalist for his school's paper, wakes up from a peaceful dream--about Heaven--when he hears his phone ring. The connection is bad, full of static, and there's a familiar voice on the other side. The female caller tells Tom she has to talk to him. It's important...please. And then he loses the connection. But things are only starting, now. His mom clearly is out of her room, but nowhere to be found. The kitchen hasn't been disturbed. The newspaper is still at the driveway. But what's worse is the fog. Dense whiteness is creeping down the road, blanketing Tom's vision. There isn't a sound outside--no birds, no cars, and no people. And something is out there, behind the mist, and it's coming for him. Andrew Klavan's new book is a fresh adventure of terror and a longing for truth in this surreal novel. It took me less that 24 hours to read this thing. Even with the business at school, I hardly put it down. As I read it, I felt as though I was watching a Doctor Who episode. Things were normal, but completely terrifying. Nothing made sense, and in my head, I kept telling myself: There's a logical explanation. There's got to be something I'm missing. Tom and my mind became one as we both set out on a terrifying scavenger hunt for answers, all the while being chased by hunched things in the fog, shadows, and that face in the computer. Read this at night, if you dare! His plot was so well done! He really SHOULD write a Doctor Who episode! There were so many twists in this story, it felt as if the book was bending backwards over itself. Although, after reading six of Klavan's novels, I was able to guess a little more of his surprises, it still held onto me and would not let go. Even though I was able to see some of the answers before I got there, Klavan kept the big ones in the mist.Klavan's writing style was a little different this time too. When his other six novels were in first person, this was in third. Only that hardly makes a difference. The way he wrote it, you felt as if Tom was telling you the story. I wonder if Klavan forgot sometimes he had switched to third person. The book was great, and I look forward to anything else Andrew Klavan comes up with.Things to watch out for:Romance: Two characters kiss; Tom seems to think a lot about what one girl thinks of himLanguage: A few sentences like "it was a hellish scene"Violence: Creatures in fog attack and try to kill Tom; death; semi-graphic scene with "pools" of bloodDrugs: Tom writes a newspaper story about how a football team used drugs to cheatOther: Character wonders if God is deciding whether a character would go to Heaven or Hell; surreal moments and scary concepts
