I'm so glad this wasn't the first KGI book I read because I never would have read any of the others. The premise of the story was good; woman running with her half brother and sister escaping their abusive father and end up getting help from Rusty and Donovan. The problem with the story comes when it both moves too quickly, but also drags along way too slowly. Donovan and Eve fall in love and into bed way too quickly, but at the same time, the story slowly winds its way through unbelievable and underdeveloped plot points. Maybe Maya Banks' publishers are pushing her to do too many books at once, but whatever the reason, this story wasn't up to her usual standards. I've been anxiously waiting for Donovan's story and wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't.

    Beware! Rant ahead!

OMG! What in the name of all that is holy was that?!

It is virtually impossible to associate this book with the rest of the KGI series. The writing is simply appalling with repetitive scenes and word choices, the characterization is completely incomprehensible and the plot is one of the more ridiculous out there.

Donovan, the sexy, geeky Kelly brother, who had such amazing potential in the previous books, is barely recognizable in the borderline psychotic and obsessive hero of After the Storm. He takes one look at Eve and decides that she's "the one" and proceeds to take over her life whether she's interested or not. Granted Eve is in an awful predicament and in desperate need of help for herself and her traumatized siblings, but Van's controlling attitude is simply creepy.

Speaking of Eve, while emotionally scared and/or physically abused heroines are the norm for KGI, Banks has gone overboard with this one. Ostensibly a strong willed fighter, Eve is actually passive, compliant and detached. Even though she has ample opportunity to stand up for herself, her solution to every obstacle it to run. This is particularly apparent in the contrived conflict toward the end where instead of confronting Van, Eve chooses to leave her siblings alone with a man who apparently betrayed her and go on the run alone - TSTL much!.

As to the suspense plot, it is virtually non-existent with a villain who barely puts in an appearance and a motive that doesn't make much sense If Walt were a pedophile he would have molested Eve as well.

As for the Kelly clan, why has the family turned into a simpering pile of goo? Yes, the men are besotted with their wives but is it really necessary to go on and on about it ad nauseam. The only bright spark in this otherwise travesty of a book were Rusty Sean. Of course, we are going to have to wait for their book because Swanny and Hancock come first although I might just skip them.

After the Storm by Maya BanksDonovan works with his brothers who all cater to the needs of a few. The government calls on them to retrieve kidnapped people where they can't go.Rusty Barnes Kelley has been adopted by the Kelley's and she' s grateful for being part of a large safe family. The company would right another wrong. getting a woman out of an abused situation or relocating them to a safe place.Rusty has hired the boy, Travis who lives with his sister, Eve and her daughter, Cammie. Van notices how thin and starving they are when he and Rusty go to visit. The house is deplorable and he tries to help them.Love bantering with the Kelley family at gatherings. Kind of confusing to take all 6 of the brothers in with their spouses and kids but after a while you get used to them all.Eve has her secrets and keeps them to herself to protect her brother and sister from harm. After the tornado the brothers move in to help them out. What I like is that excitement and action knowing the father is going to find the family and want them back. We learn why they are on the run...Love the total family connection throughout also, steamy sex scenes. Telepathic abilities enhance this book.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

I had so many problems with this book, I don't even know where to start. I'll try not to give too much away, but WARNING: HERE BE MILD SPOILERS.First of all, if I never read the phrase "soft spot for women and children" again in my life, it will be too soon. It was way, way over-used in this book, even if they tried to use it as a plot point later. We get it, Donovan gets emotional. It was used 3 times on one page at one point. Later in the book we are told that everyone constantly saying that Donovan has said soft spot makes Eve freak out about her place with him, but barely anyone said it that I can remember--it was almost always in exposition. Second, this woman just left a super controlling and abusive step-father behind, and then Donovan comes in and tries to take over her life. We see this mostly from Donovan's perspective so we get that he is just trying to help--but he does nothing to gain her trust, really, and within 2 days of meeting her is trying to take over her life JUST LIKE HER STEP-FATHER DID. Hello, she just got away from this. Telling her not to worry about it, big ol' Van will take care of everything, didn't really cut it with me. But Eve lets him! She just goes with it other than a token protest, and suddenly she is living in a compound surrounded by people she doesn't know. It really didn't read correctly to me. Next, my least favorite tension-building plot device is when authors set up a conflict that could be resolved with a conversation. Eve wants to be in on the plan to bring down her step-father, so after Van sends her off with the women-folk to do some shopping while he and the guys do the plotting (which also pissed me off), she comes back. However, for whatever reason she feels the need to sneak in the kitchen door instead of the front door and--despite us being told how she isn't afraid to stand up for herself, isn't afraid to stand up to her step dad, etc--when she hears something she doesn't understand and freaks out about, she doesn't speak up. She doesn't even stay to hear more. She just sneaks back to the women and pretends to be sick. So then, of course, Van doesn't tell her the Big Plan because he is worried about her, she doesn't ask because she is afraid of what she over-heard, and he leaves in the morning to start the Plan without even telling her that is what he's doing. Eve jumps all over the crazy conclusions she's made and runs away. And about the conclusions she jumps to: it circles back to her being "told" that Van has that epic soft spot for women and children--but especially children. So, after they jump in to bed with each other (I'll get to that in a minute), he tells her he wants a future with her. That he wants her and her siblings to be his family. But apparently that goes out the window after hearing a fraction of his plan and she decides he only wants the kids, so she runs and makes a series of bad decisions. Which honestly, her running away was more believable than half the other stuff that went on.Like the fact that she sleeps with him after knowing him maybe 4 days. And surviving being outside during a tornado. The first night she is at his house, he has to give her a shot of pain medication so she can sleep and she is described as one giant bruise. But the next night it's bring on the sexy times? Um, no. And lastly, her step-father, the big bad. We are told that he is all sorts of evil and that he is rich and powerful enough that he apparently stopped her from getting any kind of decent job. But we are never told how any of that happens. I grant you that rich people can probably get a lot of things to swing their way, but unless he is super great friends with every single business owner in that town, how is he going to make that happen? And he also had false documents about her supposed mental health issues that he showed to the police when she brought them--but no one ever checked with a doctor or anything. He just charmed the cops like crazy and they bought it. If cops were that dumb, we'd all be in trouble. There were just so many things that didn't ring true for me about this book. I've read other books in this series and they were so much better, but this one just fell short. Nothing made sense and about 75 pages could have been saved if all the repetition of his soft spot and how tight-knit and/or badass the Kelly's are was removed. Honestly, I was more interested in the pretty obvious sequel bait set up between Rusty and Sean than I was in Donovan and Eve's story.

I'm so sorry, but I didn't like it :( Sorry Maya! After Steele's story this one is a huge disappointment. There is no mission, Donovan is not credible not to mention the rest of the family. What happened here? Who falls in love in a minute? With a family that he doesn't know?Ok, so the others fell in love quickly, yes, but is sort of credible and acceptable but in this story is not. Donovan act like a fool and worse, his brothers are sappy too (I know that now that they found love and all things have changed but still!). Eve was right in being in doubt, but bam, suddenly she wakes and is in love too....I confess that I was more interested in Rusty and Sean. :)This one didn't do any justice to the other books and I really hope that Joe's and Swanny story or even Rusty/Sean and maybe (I hope) one for Skylar and Egde, are way better that this and that they bring back the wonderful stories from Maya Banks.

I have read all of Maya Banks' books and have been a fan for a long time. But, this one disappointed me. So much repetition and unnecessary dialog. It seemed clunky and not Maya's usual style of writing. Van deserved a better book, being the nice guy of KGI. Sorry, this was not up to par.

This romantic suspense had a dramatic beginning and exciting ending plus I liked the hero pursuing the heroine but I think it lagged some in the middle too heavy with characters ruminating on the situation. Donovan is determined to help Eve and her siblings escape from their trouble.
