      In Evening Stars, the third installment of Susan Mallery's heartwarming Blackberry Island series, complicated family dynamics are almost impossible to overcome when Nina Wentworth and her visiting sister Averil find themselves trapped in the roles that have defined them since childhood. Averil is happily married but the prospect of beginning a family leaves her contemplating exactly what she wants out of life. Nina is still taking care of everyone, including her irresponsible mother Bonnie, and when two men from her past unexpectedly reappear, she is forced to re-examine her past choices and take a good hard look at what she wants for her future.

      As a child, Nina was thrust into the parental role for both Averil and Bonnie and years later, nothing has changed in that respect. She let go of her dream of becoming a doctor and in the process she also lost her first love, Dylan Harrington. Now Dylan has returned to Blackberry Island to work in his father's practice and Nina begins to re-evaluate her past. Further complicating her life is the sudden reappearance of Kyle Eastland, a young Navy pilot who has never forgotten his teenage crush on Nina. Now stationed at a nearby base, Kyle is hopeful that he can convince Nina to give him a chance now they are both grown up.

      Averil's unexpected visit is the last thing that Nina needs as she tries to deal with the latest evidence of their mother's irresponsibility. Averil and Nina love one another but their interactions are laced with misunderstandings and Bonnie's return just adds more tension to their relationship.

      I really liked the contrast in Nina's relationships with Dylan and Kyle. With Kyle, Nina could just let go and live in the moment. Carefree fun with no expectations or demands which really fit in with Kyle's personality. He reminded me of a puppy-playful and enthusiastic but lacking maturity.

      On the other hand, Dylan is a painful reminder of all that Nina has lost. Their first encounters are uncomfortable and filled with tension until they finally discuss the elephant in the room: their failed youthful romance. It is through these discussions that Nina gains a new perspective on her role in their break up and provides her the opportunity to revisit childhood dreams.

      Evening Stars is a beautiful journey of self-discovery for the Wentworth women. Nina and Averil undergo a great deal of soul searching as they contemplate their pasts and in doing so, they are able fully embrace their futures. A lovely conclusion to Susan Mallery's delightful Blackberry Island series.

      Good story revolving around two women and the changes that come to their lives. Nina is almost thirty years old and has lived on Blackberry Island most of her life. She has spent most of her time, since she was twelve, taking care of her flaky mother and younger sister. Averil is now married and Nina's mom also has someone special in her life, but Nina is still stuck where she is. She isn't happy, but she isn't miserable either. Then some things happen that really shake up her life.Nina's high school boyfriend comes back to the island to help with his dad's medical practice. It's been ten years since their breakup and she's pretty sure the old feelings are dead. She opens her door one day to find Kyle, the older brother (but still younger than her) of a girl she used to babysit. He had a crush on her then, and is now interested in pursuing a more adult relationship with her. Averil shows up, needing a break from her life, and the chance to actually try writing the book she keeps talking about. And mom is there, avoiding anything she doesn't want to deal with, leaving it all up to Nina to take care of.The relationships between Nina, Averil and their mother were very complicated. Bonnie (mother) had Nina when she was just a teenager, and Averil a few years later. Bonnie never really took to mothering, leaving the responsibility to her mother, who died when Nina was twelve. Nina took control of making sure things got done, and ended up being more mother than sister to Averil. Nina had her own dreams of going to medical school, but couldn't leave her family, so she gave them up and became a nurse instead. Continuing to take care of everyone, she put Averil through school. When Averil comes home for an extended visit, there's strain between them. Averil whines and complains that Nina is bossy, but Averil doesn't take responsibility for any of her actions. Nina snipes at Averil about how she has left such a perfect life, and what is wrong with her, etc. Bonnie flits through the days, creating problems that Nina then has to fix, but getting mad at Nina for doing it. The relationships that Nina had with the two men were also complicated. Kyle showed up and his intensity was pretty flattering to Nina. He's a few years younger, very good looking, and she is actually attracted to him. He's not going to be in the area long, and Nina figures that he's looking for a fling to pass the time. They definitely have some chemistry going on, but that really seems to be it. When he's not off flying, he comes to Nina, takes her to dinner and then to bed. There isn't much in the way of conversation, and what there is seems to be mostly centered around his flying. Dylan's reappearance is a bit more stressful at the beginning. Nina remembers what they had together, and how heartbroken she was when they split. Dylan is friendly, and once they get past dealing with their history together, their old friendships resurfaces. Dylan is there for her when she faces a couple family issues, and when she comes down with the flu he really steps up. What she didn't expect from him were some hot kisses that bring her old feelings roaring back to the surface. She isn't sure what her feelings really are for the two of them, but she's going to have to decide.Nina's sister Averil has her own problems that she's trying to deal with. She's very much in love with her husband, likes her job writing for a magazine, and has the urge to write a book. They are also thinking about starting a family, but that has Averil suddenly starting to panic about her life. An argument with her husband has her headed home, but that has problems of its own. I thought Averil was pretty immature. She never really accepted responsibility for any of her actions. When she first arrived I thought she was pretty selfish, expecting Nina to take care of her. She also had quite an attitude problem with almost anything Nina would say to her. She did start to change pretty quickly. I liked seeing her get involved in the antique store, and how the things she did there started her looking at her life differently. When an unexpected treasure is found it forces all of the women to look at their lives and the choices they've made in the past. I especially liked seeing Nina take her courage in hand and go after her dreams. I really enjoyed the visitor she got at the end and the result of that visit.

      Having read the other two books in the Blackberry Island Series, #3 “Evening Stars” did not disappoint. I especially enjoyed #2 and enjoyed catching up with Nina, which we met in Three Sisters (#2), a nurse working for Andi, the pediatrician.

      A sweet story of two sisters, Nina and Averil, who lives in California and decides to come to the island to work on a book with a dog, escaping her husband and is not ready to start a family. Nina which has always taken care of everyone, has two guys fighting for her attention, plus juggling her career and her crazy mom, her mom’s antique shop, and her self-centered sister.

      Likeable and realistic characters, a book about relationships between mothers and daughters, personal growth, and two sisters with some fun guys in the mix in this small island town. Lots of tears and laughter from this cast of characters….Evening Stars can be a standalone; however, you will want to read the previous two, as they were delightful!

      Looking forward to the Mischief Bay series where Averil will be the link to a new series in 2015 with lots romance and friendship.

I loved the feel Ms. Mallery set up in this small town, the chemistry she created, and the laugh out loud moments throughout. You’ve got Nina who has had to step in ever since she was a teen to play “mom,” not only to her own mother, but also to her younger sister. Fast forward a few years and suddenly things are falling into place and troubles are falling left and right. She tries to keep control of it all, yet finds herself in the mist of attention from two very hot men who want her, and won’t stop at anything to get her.The path she takes is visible as the reader goes through the book. It all pieces together very nicely and the chemistry is off the charts. The secondary love story running at the same time was also a nice touch, and goes to prove that just because two people get married, doesn’t mean that they have to stop working for their happy ever after.If you want a romance with a small town feel, that still leaves you needing a cold shower, and laughing so much your eyes water, get this today. Great read!

      In Evening Stars, the final Blackberry Island novel, Nina Wentworth is overburdened with her daily responsibilities. She is at ‘standing room only’ capacity and the last thing she needs is another burden added to her already complicated life. She only has herself to blame - it seems to be mostly her fault; due to the fact she has the tendency to be a control freak. Nina is determined to handle every situation herself but she quickly learns that she cannot control everything. Starting with the fact her car leaves her stranded on the side of the road, in the pouring rain. To make matters worse she gets rescued by her high school sweetheart, Dylan Harrington.“He’d been her first boyfriend, her first time, her first broken heart.”The author puts a unique twist on the typical relationship between mother and daughter. Since Nina was twelve she has overcompensated for her mother’s inability to handle even the simplest tasks, like calling the repair man to fix the roof. It is that unreliability that leads to her falling off the roof and into the arms of another man from her past, Kyle Eastland. At sixteen Nina had babysat for the Eastland family and Kyle, then twelve, had an enormous crush on her. He was completely enamored with her, following her around, confessing his undying love – she was humiliated by his infatuation. “So fourteen years ago. I was sixteen. I was saving money for college.”“I know. I kept telling you to wait for me, but you didn’t listen.”To complicate things even further her sister, Averil, has return to Blackberry Island with a dog in tow. “You’re my queen, Neenie. You’ll always be the queen.”I was impressed by the author’s ability to allow the heroine to wallow in her regrets without putting a damper on the story. I was especially awestruck with how Susan Mallery handled the ‘my life did not turn out as planned’ scenario. As a bonus the reader follows alongside Nina as her character matures – each choice she makes toward reclaiming her life is well-thought out. The author creates a nature flow that is engaging.       Evening Stars by Susan Mallery This book in the Blueberry Island saga is about the 3 girls that used to live next door. Now Nina lives there and rather than finish her nursing degree to go into practice with her love Dylan they split up and he left. She now works for the pediatrician, Andi next door who is pregnant.She also helps her mom run the antique store along with her lover Bettie. Her sister Averil who's with Kevin and she runs the Girl Magazine in CA but she needs time away from him. They had planned to start a family but she's using on the pill...The antique store has its problems and Nina doesn't spend as much time there as she should-not much is even inventoried and the latest person running it while the elder ladies were going to estate sales had robbed from them... Nina thinks she might find an honest salesperson in Casey who now has children in college.Andi is married to the contractor Wade and they now raise his teen daughter Cassie. Kyle, whom Nina used to babysit is now back in town for a visit and wants to take her to dinner. Dylan also wants to take her to dinner...Interesting to see how this all plays out for everybody because of all the twists and turns. So many emotions and love what the evening stars title really stands for. Hot steamy sex scenes.I received this book from Net Galley via Harlequin MIRA in exchange for my honest review.

      Evening Stars is the last book in the Blackberry Island trilogy. And Susan Mallery does it once again by incorporating the reader into her small town settings with her charismatic characters that keep you coming back for more. I have continuously been caught up in every series that I have read by this endearing author, who makes each book seem like a trip back home. And as with every other book in the series, I found myself sad to see the book end.This book brings us the story of Nina Wentworth, who we met previously in Three Sisters. I found myself quite charmed by this story of a woman who gives up her dreams to handle the daily operation of her impulsive and frivolous mother's business, as well as providing her sister with the opportunity to leave the island to pursue her own dreams. Evening Stars was the perfect ending to yet another entertaining series by an author that readers have counted on to take us to places we want to return to and people we want to know more about.I always can count on Susan to provide me with another new adventure with each new book! If you enjoy the series of such authors as Joann Ross, Jodi Thomas, Jill Gregory, Emily March, and Brenda Novak (just to name a few....), I think you would definitely enjoy the books of Susan Mallery!
