About this audiobook

The acclaimed national bestseller that is “old-school horror at its best” (Stephen King) follows a scout troop as it is unexpectedly caught up in an isolating and utterly terrifying fight for their lives.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

Narrator did a great job, but it felt like it was gross just to be gross.

The premise of the book made it an ideal read for me: isolated location, interesting protagonists and slow paced. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real effort to finish listening to it. Honestly, although the very detailed description throughout the book are meant to drawn you in into what is happening in a given moment, I really think that they were a little too drown out at times: not every single description has to be 20 never-ending minutes of words, when a paragraph would have probably been enough.

John Carpenter's The Thing meets Lord of the Flies. This book shook me to my core from start to finish. Cutter's writing of the grotesques and horrors the Troop faces on the island is nothing I've ever read before. A must-read for any horror buff!

Author over used the word “Flesh”, so much so that every time it was said it took me out of the story. The plot was super weak, most likely because all the time spent writing this book was put into making it gruesome just to be gruesome. Which honestly made this book corny. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

I absolutely loved this book. Nick Cutter is a genius in his descriptions and details. I was genuinely freaked out while reading this story! I could not put it down ! I finished it in a couple of days and have started another of his books. Highly recommend this one to anyone who loves a classic horror story!

One of the few books that made me very uncomfortable. Not for the faint of heart. Very well written!

Wow, what a great book to gear up for spooky season! The Troop is horror at it's finest. The writing was so atmospheric, it gave me chills multiple times and I could see the vivid imagery being described. It's definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of horror, or if you are looking for a truly creepy experience. I'll definitely be checking out other works by Nick Cutter.

It was ok. I had originally heard it was a horror book. It would have been better to include the word parasite. That would have cleared things up.

This was so creepy and disturbing, and made me feel uncomfortable...

The Troop is a beautifully written, original story with excellent narration, and is well worth the listen. My Only qualm is that it was never exactly “scary” to me. Gross? Yes. Disturbing? Very. Creepy? You bet. But scary… nah.
This was more like ultra descriptive “body horror” and is reminiscent of 80’s/90’s Stephen King (though the writing supersedes anything SK has ever done) and would almost be better categorized as sci-fi/horror.
I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to horror, and unless the story wakes up the ol’ existential dread, or leaves me with a fear Ive never sat alone with before, I’m rarely ever truly impressed.
This is a fantastic story that you should most certainly listen to, but it definitely has a major science fiction lean and is NOT for those who are sensitive to extremely graphic descriptions of physical violence, animal abuse, and gross bodily harm.

felt like it was written by a twelve year old trying to be gross and scary. also the author has a wierd fascination with a 14 year olds penis so if ur into that give this book a listen

This book was effed up.  I finally found a book that people said, "It's disturbing," and it actually was.

A scount master takes five scounts to a local island for the annual weekend camping trip.  The scout master is just done, and the kids are just the worst.

Without spoiling, the scout master made bad decision after bad decision, one scount qas very into testing his limits with adults, anf another had anger issues... This is just thenperfect storm for bad things.  I've never had a desire to read Lord of the Flies, and this just solidified that lack of want.

Very good (bad) book; check your trigger warnings. There were things I was prepared for that I was still not prepared for.

I loved and hated this book. My anxiety went haywire during certain parts. The kitten and Sea Turtle made me cringe and cry. This is a wonderfully horribly written book.

I never thought a book about Boy Scouts would mentally scar me. I find myself thinking about the descriptions over and over. The Troop left me feeling uncomfortable, but in the best way.

This is a very gruesome and sad book but well written. I cringed while listening to it and had to fast forward some parts but I was able to finish it.

The author has a talent for describing things in a way that made me want to throw up. The book is incredibly gross, so if you like that kind of thing, read it! The narrator is also talented.

Lord of the Flies meets the Island of Dr. Moreau. Descriptive multi-player POV writing is punctuated by scientific breadcrumbs of dread as the story builds to a disgustingly terrifying climax. Except now…I’m hungry.

The book was written well, largely in the style of Stephen King. However the The detailed descriptions of torturing animals much for me. I stopped with three hours and 30 minutes of audiobook left and had already suffered through the torture of a chimpanzee a kitten a sea turtle and several people. I really did not care what happened to anyone in the book anymore at the point of the sea turtle.

It might have been alright if I had read it, but I have at least two hours of commuting every day now, so I listened to it instead and the excellent narration disturbed the heck out of me. Disgusting, depressing, vivid, visceral. Totally awesome, I loved it. Probably never read or listen to it again ?

Animal abuse is a deal breaker for me. It’s a personal choice. Nick Cutter is such a great writer but I find myself skipping large parts of his books to prevent hearing about animals being tortured.

I really liked this. Very disturbing like the other Cutter books, but the characters and story seemed to be a bit more focused and fleshed out.
