      This was my first S. D. Tooley book and I loved it! Ms. Tooley kept me on the edge of my seat and my brain churning. I definitely want to read more from this author. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know! 5 Stars!

      I received this book through the member giveaway program, and I wanted to first thank the author for giving me an opportunity to read it. So anyway, I haven't read any of the other Sam Casey Mystery novels so I had a little bit of a difficult time picking up the characters and their relations to one another and all of that good background info. (But normally when I read a series and in the later books when the author takes time out of the story to reintroduce characters it annoys me... so I didn't really mind not having that here.) So once I figured out who was who in the story I have to say I really enjoyed it. (I can even forgive some of the outdated pop culture references. Ie: a crack about Bill Clinton and a Whitney Houston reference.) I started reading it thinking it was going to be a task I had to do so I could review it in the end but I found myself wanting to pick it right back up every time I had to put it down. So I very much enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to go back and read the previous four books so I can get to know all the characters from the beginning. It unfolded like any good mystery novel will... some questions, some questionable people, some action thrown in. A very enjoyable read.

      Sam Casey is a former police who has an uncanny ability to communicate with the dead. If you start getting images of Jennifer Love Hewitt in your head, lose them. Sam Casey doesn't provide post-life therapy for wayward souls. She solves crimes, murders usually, with their nebulous help.Ghosts don't sit down at chat with Casey. Instead, they show her glimpses of their lives. Sometimes a bit more than that, but usually just quick flashes.I found myself introduced to Casey in What Lies Within, the fifth Sam Casey book. I found that after a few pages, I knew the characters well enough to pick up on their relationships, and get a feeling about who they were and what they felt.After chasing down a wayward cat, Casey's husband, an active police detective temporarily demoted to animal control, discovers a dead female body in a locked room. Through supernatural circumstances, the woman is found to have a connection with the chief of police, one of two major contenders for the upcoming mayoral election.Casey has strong negative feelings for the chief, but reluctantly helps him for reasons beyond her understanding. Meanwhile, a very knowledgeable reporter named Rafe is running around performing his own investigation.Journeying through political, social, and gang-related corruption, Casey works her way to the bottom of the mystery.I found this book to be surprisingly good, especially when held against the professionally published mysteries you might find at your local bookstore. S. D. Tooley manages to use the supernatural elements of this book as a way to set it apart from other mysteries, while at the same time, not using it as a deus ex machina to magically solve the mystery on the last page. Aside from the whole paranormal aspect, this is a completely believable mystery. Recommended for those who like a little paranormal fiction, especially of the mystery genre.

      I read this book after reading the first in the series. I was very excited about the idea of the series because I enjoy a good mystery, a strong female lead, and a bit of the paranomal thrown in for good measure. The characters are enjoyable, though slightly flat. The story was interesting and entertaining, but there were a few times that I had to flip back to a previous page to make sure I was following correctly. I think that if the characters were a little more unique and robust, it would help the story immensely. Overall, it was a decent read with an interesting plot and some good twists.

      With some series you can start at with any book and not feel as if you are missing anything. This is not one of those series. I felt as if I wanted more description on the characters and a bit more character building. I ran hot and cold with this book. Parts were amazing that I could not put down and others were just ok. There were no sections in the book which made me want to put the book down though.Some of the characters were a bit stereotypical but the plot was enjoyable. It was a quick read and a good light read but I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series as I plan on reading the first book next.

      The dead speak to Sam Casey, tell her secrets about the deads' life and death, and sometimes put her in danger. An old hotel is to be demolished when two homicide cops, who have been demoted to animal control, chase a cat into the hotel and up some stairs, where they find a dead body. The search is on for the killer. Some early facts about the hotel combine with current facts to help solve the murder. It starts a little slowly but picks up and becomes a good read that most mystery readers will enjoy.

      Loved this book. Kept me interested from beginning to end. Lots of twists and turns and a really enjoyable read, so much so I'm getting the rest of the series to read.

      As a series type book I found this harder to get into due to no "catch-up" information. The story line flowed smoothly and I enjoyed Mr Kendall (would love to lunch with him). Plan to pick up earlier books in the series.

      This is the fifth book in my Sam Casey series. I grew up in the Calumet City, Illinois area and had heard numerous stories about the notorious "Sin Strip" days. I used the history of those Sin Strip days as the backdrop for the plot. Our local paper had run a four-part series on this history during the time I was writing this book. I was surprised to find out that one of my uncle's cousins happened to be a cop during that era. Naturally, I fictionalized all of the events when writing my book. All names, places, and events are strictly from my imagination.
