- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I pulled this book off my shelf recently because I was in search of holiday themed books. The cover of this one looked Wintery, so I tossed it in my pile. I discovered later that this book is set in the winter months but instead of Christmas is was closer to Valentine's. But, it was only 250 pages long and so I sat down last night and finished it in one sitting.Hester is a divorced single mom. She has worked really hard for nine years to provide a good stable life for herself and her son. She is content with her life until she meets her new neighbor, Mitch. Mitch wakes Hester's long dormant feelings of romance, but Hester is too afraid of putting herself and her son through another breakup or divorce, so she refuses to marry Mitch.Mitch on the other hand can't accept Hester's "one day at a time" philosophy and refuses to give up. Mitch is also crazy about Hester's son and wants to be the father the boy never had. Mitch was awesome. The perfect guy. I loved him. I also understood Hester's fears of having to start over again if things didn't work out. But of course we had our HEA.The only thing that took away from the book a litte bit was that it was published over 20 years ago. There were video arcades, VCR's , and video rentals. But, to me the worst thing was my own thought process. These days I just can't see a young mother allowing a grown man ( in this mid thirites) to baby sit her son without really checking the guy out first. I don't know what this says about me, but the first thought I had was, "Why would a guy his age want to spend so much time alone with a nine year old boy". I would have been wary of Mitch. But, that's the world we live in now and you can never be too careful. But, in 1988, daycare scandals were only just coming to light and neighbors did volunteer to watch your kids without having to pass a polygraph or give a blood sample. I thought Hester was too trusting in that area. But, despite the time period, the story didnt' suffer. I loved it!

Originally published in 1988, this is one of Nora Robert's earliest works and it certainly shows its age. The hero, Mitch Dempsey, is in pursuit and not in the least bit subtle about it. In fact, he is quite overbearing in his refusal to take no for an answer. The heroine, Hester Wallace, is exceedingly shy and reserved, and only exhibits a backbone when it comes to protecting her son.
Nevertheless, the romance itself is quite sweet, and Hester's intelligent and precocious son, Radley, is simply delightful. He and Mitch's dog steal the book.
Overall, not the best of Nora's works but a pleasant enough read to while away an afternoon.
