Reason for Reading: Son read aloud to me as his reader. The first book in the Frog and Toad series and a Caldecott honor winner this book introduces us to the now classic characters with the familiar format of five short stories of their friendship. Of two different natures, they bring out the best in each other and enjoy life and nature to the fullest. The simple stories will delight young and old alike. My son, now on the old side for these books, but just at the perfect reading level for him, still enjoys the simple, honest humour found within the pages. He enjoyed this book and wants to read the last one we still have left in the series to read. A perennial favourite and a keeper for my shelves!

This book characterizes the friendship of Toad and Frog. Toad is awaken by Frog because it is springtime. Toad wants to go back to sleep until May. Frog will be lonely without toadso he rips off the calendar until it reads May and wakes up Toad. The two skip off happily. Frog wasn't feeling well in summer, so Toad made him a hot cup of tea. Frog wants Toad to tell him a story, but Toad doesn't have any in mind. He stands on his head, splashes himself with water, and and bangs his head against a wall; now Toad lies in bed. He asks frog to tell him a story, but falls asleep. Toad loses his button. He asks sparrow and racoon, and they show him different buttons than his own. He goes home and finds the button he was looking for, and sews on the button for frog. They go for a swim. Toad wears a bathing suit and is embarrased, while frog freeballs it. Turtle, snake, dragonfly, mouse, and lizards meet up and all stare at Toad in his bathing suit, laughing. Toad gets embarrassed and goes home. This book is quite hillarious. The pictures reveal the date which the book originally was published, but the stories and jokes are timeless.

My first grader students really enjoyed this book because they felt like they were reading a chapter book. This book includes 5 short stories. In the first story Frog really wants Toad to wake up for the season. Toad does not like this idea at all. Frog then decides to change the calendars in Toads house so that when he wakes up he finally thinks that winter is over. The next four stories tell about their adventures together. in the next story Frog is sick and Toad spends time telling him stories so that he feels well. Toad ends up getting sick and Frog repays the favor of telling him stories. In another story Toad looses the button on his Jacket and Frog helps him find it. My favorite story (and my 1st graders favorite) was when Toad and Frog go swimming. Toad wears a funny bathing suit to swim in and Frog has a hard time containing his laughter. Younger readers will love Frog and Toad and will have fun reading about their friendship and adventures. The illustrations are only in green and brown but they add to the story and create the humor and feeling that is needed to show Frog and Toads unique friends ship. The vocabulary in the book challenges beginning readers but also contains many words that can be sound out as well as many of the common site words.

Truly a classic children's book. A Caldecott winner for good reason and the lessons in these simple stories are wonderful.

Frog and Toad agreed: it was a perfect day for a swim. And Frog was kind enough not to look at Toad in his bathing suit, per Toad's request. But when the swimming was over, a crowd had gathered to see Toad in his funny-looking suit, and neither Frog nor Toad could make them leave.

Another installment of Arnold Lobel's classic characters stands the test of time. Frog and Toad can be a bit different in some aspects - notably, Toad's cranky attitude versus Frog's cheerful one - but they are still the best of friends. Simple adventures show off their ability to be there for each other, whether it's Toad trying to tell a story when Frog is sick or Frog writing a letter for Toad when he learns the latter has been sadly waiting for mail every day. This 64-page book contains five chapters that are more like five self-contained stories. This is great for emergent readers who may not have the patience / ability for actual chapter books yet but want to graduate from easy readers. It also worked out wonderfully in my toddler classroom. I originally intended to read only one story for them, thinking that was all the attention span they would have as well as all the time we would have after our other curriculum activities. But when they sat down to eat lunch, I ended up reading the remaining four stories to them in succession and they listened in rapt attention. (I actually had to remind them to keep eating because otherwise they were just staring at the book!) They loved the stories and the characters, laughing at some of Toad's silly antics and even completing a simple character chart later. I also found a coloring page of Frog and Toad for them and they were delighted to see the characters again. There are so many other activities to go along with these books that they are perfect for the classroom or homeschooling parent. Even without other activities, these books are great stand-alone tales of everyday things with a fun twist; children of various ages are sure to fall in love with Frog and Toad!

This series is a great way to get children to start thinking about the dynamics of friendship. They illustrate the ways that friends help each other out as well as the ways that friends can upset one another.Frog and Toad Are Friends invites beginning readers to celebrate friendship in these happy stories. An important thing about this book is that students can read them by themselves.

Tiffany Warren is able to craft a compelling story. I received the book as an LT Early Reviewer and I'm very much not in the book's target demographic--I'm an atheist who doesn't read romance or chick-lit but likes erotica--and I'll admit that I was eager to find out what happened to the characters.Unfortunately, I couldn't give the book higher marks because there are some structural problems with it. The ultimate conflict of the book was minimal and was almost immediately resolved. Also, the characters felt very two-dimensional. Darrin's conversion felt very rushed and I found it hard to believe that an avowed player would immediately change his ways after a few church visits.Ultimately, this is an adequate light read but it isn't very taxing.

Frog and Toad is a chapter book in which two best friends named, frog and toad, go on adventures together. Each chapter is a different story with the first chapter being about toad not wanting to awaken from hibernation and frog tricking him, the second is about Toad trying to think of a story to tell Frog, the third is about Toad losing a button on his jacket and Frog helping him find it but eventually finding out he had the button the whole time so he sows Frog a jacket with many buttons, the fourth chapter is about toad wearing a bathing suit when they go swimming and not wanting anyone to see it but everyone waits around the water till he gets out, and the final chapter is about Toad never getting mail so Frog writes him a letter to make his friend happy. This is a good fantasy chapter book because the story is split up into chapters and Frog and Toad are personified and live in houses and wear clothes. I would read the stories individually to primary students and as a chapter book for intermediate. illustrations: watercolor

This book is a modern fantasy with personified animal characters, called anthropomorphic characters. A classic read for kids, the Frog and Toad books teach valuable lessons while bringing students along on the adventure. I would keep this in my classroom library.

Frog and Toad are indeed, friends. This book shows a comfortable friendship and the things friends do for one another. The text is large and easy to read, and the words are simple, but the story is so full of elegant wit. I would recommend this so much more over so many of the more contemporary early reader books which have so little substance. Granted, some children may find the book a little old-fashioned, but I think if they give it a chance they will quickly get engaged and find themselves laughing out loud.
