About this audiobook

Seth Weinstein always knew Tina was way, way, way out of his league. Which is why he's still astonished that he's on a plane heading for their wedding in Florida. The Groom Posse has already pulled an airport prank on him-and he's survived! It should be easy going from now on.

But Seth has absolutely no idea what he's about to get into. A simple drink or two with the boys sparks a series of events that will pit Seth and his friends against everything and everyone imaginable, from his very powerful, very disapproving soon-to-be father-in-law to the federal government to a love-struck orangutan.

Seth's hope for smooth sailing is turning into a trip on the Titanic. And the water is getting deeper by the minute…

I guess I have outgrown this type of slapstick humor.

This book is a very pleasant read, with a lot of comedy and a happy ending. Dave Barry is back in form.

This was... ok. I don't like Dave Barry's fiction as much as his non fiction. I think he tries way too hard. The book was a bit nuts, it reminded me some of A. Lee Martinez's work, but less polished and less entertaining. I think I was supposed to feel for the main character, but I disliked him pretty intensely. This is a good beach read, though. Nothing earth shattering and easy to put down and pick back up.

What fun! The story revolves around a destination wedding taking place n Miami. An out of control groom posse, an orangutan named Trevor, marijuana brownies, and other zany things contribute to wedding planning mayhem.

Insane City, by Pulitzer prize winner Dave Barry, is a madcap adventure that will leave you in tears from laughing so hard. We begin our adventure with two young people the night before their wedding...and end it the next day at a wedding. You choose whose wedding it is though. And in between there are adventures galore as we follow our heroes and snakes (yes a real snake!) throughout their Floridan hijinks. If you need a good laugh make sure you pick up this book. You won't regret it.

I've missed Dave Barry. No doubt about it. And there's no doubt he loves his city, even when he dresses her up like an overweight tart in spangles and a spandex dress a size too small.Imagine the most meticulously planned wedding, even down to the creation of the cake topper (hand-crafted in Italy and costing more than some college tuition.) Now imagine the bachelor party from hell, rolling like a perfect strike down the alley, toward that wedding. That's Insane City, where Dave Barry takes his reader through a different sort of south Florida than the tourist boards depict: Run-down tourist traps, characters that just might have to look up to see the underbelly of society, illegal immigrants, thugs, pimp-mobiles equipped with porn videos in the dashboard. It's even got millionaires, magic brownies, and the governor of Florida. With typical raunchy humor, Barry describes a wedding weekend like none other, and a groom on a quest to retrieve the ring needed for the perfect wedding. Did I mention that there's a horny orangutan involved?

This is Dave Barry's version of the Hangover movies. Dave's wit and humor is laugh out loud fun and the story is fun. I enjoyed the read and would recommend it for goofy laughs.

I won this through First Reads, I was surprised and pleased to come across it. Usually I listen to Dave Barry on cd - if you are going to laugh out loud, it's easier to be in your car alone. And I did laugh out loud reading this one too. A very clever, very funny story, that moves right along and does not lapse into predictability. Hope he keeps them coming. A great read for the beach or while traveling, or as a palate cleanser in between heftier works. Definitely recommended.

I am sure that most Dave Barry fans will just love this book but it was all a little too much for me. There were just way too many zany complications and addled confusions that I wanted to scream "uncle" by the end. The book is based totally on Murphy's Law. It involves the days leading up to the marriage of a young man whose future wife is out of his league in terms of beauty and wealth. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong but yet by the end everything is wrapped up with a neat bow. Too Much.

I am a big Dave Barry fan. While I tend to enjoy his columns more than his novels, and find Big Trouble to be the best of his novels (not including those he co-wrote with others), I was still entertained by this story of poor Seth and his mixed-up wedding weekend. Barry's novels tend to have characters and events like a jumble of tangled string, sometimes crossing each other, sometimes veering away, but eventually getting sorted out to make a nice bow of a happy ending. This book was no exception. After getting separated from both his friends and his suitcase on the night of his arrival in Miami, and then happening upon a Haitian refugee and her two small childre on the beach in the wee hours of the following morning, groom Seth spends the rest of the weekend attempting to retrieve his suitcase (which contains the wedding ring), help the Haitians, and appease his high-powered, filthy rich fiancee and her family. Of course the weekend also includes marijuana laced brownies, a lovesick orangutan, and chicken nuggets fired from a shipboard cannon.Lots of fun!

Seth has just arrived in Miami, a couple of days before his wedding. The bride -- a rich, beautiful, and extremely strong-willed woman -- is bound and determined that everything is going to be perfect on her perfect day. But almost immediately, Seth begins to have an, uh, interesting time, starting with arriving at the wrong hotel, getting drunk and misplacing his luggage, and moving on through a cascading series of increasingly wacky hijinks involving, among other things, some Haitian refugees, an orangutan, a pirate ship, and rather large quantities of pot. It's very funny stuff, which is unsurprising, as I don't think Dave Barry is capable of not being at least moderately hilarious. I gotta say, though, I kept finding myself cringing a bit for the poor main character, even as I was laughing. As with many of Dave Barry's works, fictional or non-fictional, I think the moral here is: Stay the heck out of Miami. That place is nuts.

South Florida captured at its worse. Seth is going to get married on Key Biscayne. But added to the mix is one hilarious situation after another beginning with his grooms party placing a fake vagina in his luggage for the TSA to find at the airport. It begins there. Not a deep book, but laugh out loud funny complete with illegals, pimps, the rich and the snobs. Very funny. A light read.

Dave Barry produces another absurd, hillarious, action-packed triller. I'd rank it it above Tricky Business, his previous solo novel, as the plot threads come together very early in the book and it feels much more cohesive. I'm not sure it's quite as good as Big Trouble, but it could just be that I'm becoming used to Dave Barry's fiction, and although I'm highly entertained I'm no longer as surprised. Besides fans of Big Trouble and Dave Barry's columns about the weirdness of Florida, I would recommend this book to fans of Carl Hiassen.

When I picked up the book I thought it was going to be one of Dave Barry's nonfiction books and was caught a little off guard by what was clearly fiction. That being said while it came across as kind of dumb at first it was actually very funny. Some of the end results relationship wise were predictable, but some plot twists were just so completely off the wall that it leveled out in the end. A fun, quick, over the top read. Good for when you need a little silly.

“Insane City” is the perfect title for this insanely funny romp through Miami. Billionaires, Haitian refugees and an orangutan are part of a cast of characters that will make you roar in laughter. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to escape reality and spend a few hours laughing.

I received a free advance review copy of this book from the publisher. My first impression is that this reads more like a movie instead of a book, given the way that the dialog is written and the scenes described. In fact, this would probably make a great summer movie for people who enjoy films such as Bridesmaids and The Hangover. There are so many wacky things taking place throughout the book and the plot moves constantly. Throughout the book Dave put his characters in some hilarious, not to mention embarrassing, situations. While some of the general plot is predictable, most of the specific (and often bizarre) situations are not and the book is full of one liners that will make you laugh out loud. While this isn’t great literature or a book with thought provoking insights, it continues to do what Dave Barry does best: makes you laugh.

Destination wedding hijinks and misadventures abound as Seth Weinstein, a laggard Twitter marketer, heads for Miami where he and debutante Tina Clark are planning to be married despite the disapproval of her wealthy parents. Seth and his Groom Posse stumble from one misadventure to another, leaving the groom to wonder if he’ll ever find himself standing at the altar beside his bride.Filled with Dave Barry’s typical mayhem, plot twists, and humor, the story doesn’t offer much in the way of surprises, but this whacky conglomeration of oddball characters is well-drawn and all seem supremely suited to the chaos of the tale.

One would not call Seth Weinstein a high achiever. No matter. Much to even his own surprise, he becomes engaged to Tina who is beautiful, successful and the daughter of a billionaire. Insane City, by Dave Barry, opens with Seth and his "Groom Posse" traveling to Miami for an over the top destination wedding. He has no idea of what is about to befall him.All that is really expected of him is that he shows up for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding ceremony bringing the custom made wedding band. These are not unreasonable expectations. However, he encounters a few obstacles. Through a series of events, his social group grows to include a stripper , her pimp, a man with an eleven-foot albino Burmese python, a frightened Haitian refugee and her young children and an orangutan named Trevor. With the addition of each character the story becomes more complicated and funnier. It is amazing how quickly things go from bad to worse. Mr. Barry has written a novel that skillfully deals with serious social issues while being hysterical at the same time. The characters, for the most part, are unique and endearing in their own way. Some not so much. The end- well, it is a surprise. This is a laugh out loud read and I really enjoyed it-so much so that I am going to Miami.I received this book for free through LibraryThing and I give this review of my own free will.
