- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In "Ever After High- The Unfairest Of Them All" the main characters are Apple White (daughter of Snow White), Raven Queen (daughter of the Evil Queen), and Maddie Hatter (daughter of the Mad Hatter). Apple is a Royal and thinks you should always follow your fairy tale destiny. Raven and Maddie on the other hand, are Rebels and disagree. The story takes place at a school called Ever After High. One day everything goes wrong. Apple and Raven have to contact the Evil Queen (Raven's Mom) to save Maddie from being expelled and banished from the town of Ever After. After all of this, will Maddie fulfill her destiny? "Ever After High-The Unfairest of Them All" is an extraordinary book, especially if you are an Ever After High fan. I gave this 5 stars because I love the interaction between the characters and the suspense at the end. This is recommended for 3rd- 6th graders. If you love the original fairy tales like Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella, you will love Shannon Hale's twist on the classics.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Pretty good. Again, it's Raven's choices working out for the rest of the school (and beyond), but this time it worked better for me. The POV is divided between Raven and Apple, with a few bits with Maddie (all talking to the Narrator...we learn a bit about him/her, too). Lots of secrets revealed - Cerise's, in particular, is blown to smithereens, with an elegant (temporary) solution to the matter. A nice trick with the spell, and Apple finds the advice she's been given isn't quite as pointless as she'd been thinking. Grimm is going to blow his top pretty soon - they keep blocking him. It will be interesting to see Baba Yaga dealing with the young one. All sorts of neat things going on - and Raven makes a few more choices and decisions, which will probably ripple out again, but they are much more positive than the simple decision _not_ to sign. Now she has some idea of what she wants, not just what she doesn't want. And a solid lead-in to the next story, because that's going to have to be dealt with...

I must have been in a different frame of mind with this one than the first because instead of being annoyed at the funny quirks and twists of fairy tales, I found them hilarious and clever. Favorite line: "It's about to get all nonfiction in here." I love where this is going and can't wait to deal with the Jabberwocky in the next book. He's always been deliciously chilling for me ever since the made-for-TV Alice in the 80's. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The famous offspring of fairy tale legends are back in the second volume of the Ever After High series. In this world, children of fairy tale characters like Snow White, the Evil Queen, and Red Riding Hood attend a high school where they are intended to learn the behaviors appropriate to their role in the story and embrace their destiny of reliving their parents' tale. In fact, in their second year they are expected to sign the Storybook of Legends, which operates like a contract guaranteeing they will fulfill their destiny. At the end of the first book in the series, Raven Queen (duaghter of the Evil Queen), refused to sign. She had no interest in becoming evil. Her decision came at the end of the last novel. and threw everyone into confusion. The students are still in disarray as the story picks up in this book. Raven and Apple White (daughter of Snow White) are awkward and angry with each other. The other students are equally at odds. Some of them are furious with Raven for potentially ruining their own happy endings. Others want nothing more than to break from their own prescribed roles, and applaud Raven as a hero. Fights are constantly breaking out between the rebels and royals. Tension erupts in a food fight in the castleteria, and another brawl breaks out in the forbidden treasury room. The consequences for the second squabble has a horrible consequence. Someone breaks a tiny glass unicorn figurine, which happened to be a prison for the fearsome jabberwocky, and Maddie Hatter (daughter of the Mad Hatter) is blamed. Headmaster Grimm declares that her punishment is banishment. Raven and Apple are united again by their indignant sense of the injustice of the whole situation. They decide to work together to help Maddie, and their joint mission helps them to heal the wounds in their friendship. The headmaster told Raven that the only way to save Maddie was with a spell of Irrefutable Evidence, but only high level sorcerers can perform those. With no other option, Raven reveals to Apple that her mother is still alive, and they go to the Evil Queen for help. Raven's mom is delighted that her daughter is disobeying the headmaster, and gives the girls riddles about the ingredients of the spell. Apple and Raven split the list in half, and work hard to solve the riddles and find the necessary components. They are racing against the clock: they have to untangle all the riddles, find the described ingredients, and learn how to cast the spell before Maddie's banishment the next morning.
