About this audiobook
In the New York Times bestseller that the Washington Post called "Lean In for misfits," Sophia Amoruso shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world.
Sophia Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school-a job she'd taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.
Flash forward ten years to today, and she's the founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal, a $250-million-plus fashion retailer with more than four hundred employees. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she's written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.
#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn't about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It's about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I have mixed feelings about #Girlboss. Like many other reviewers have said, there were large swaths of the book that I was not a huge fan of; at times Amoruso's advice seemed platitudinal and repetitive, if not obvious. For example, haven't we all already heard, time and time again, about the value of risk-taking, tenacity, determination, hard work, and attention to detail? Her perspective was unique in many cases, because of her various "counter-cultural" tendencies (as she puts it, her contrarian nature), and it was empowering to hear about her success from such humble beginnings. But the farther I got into the book, the more I began to feel that I, as a twenty-something-year-old, was simply not the right audience after all. Perhaps if I had read this at sixteen, it would've been fresher.
In the end, I'm not sad about having read it--there were a lot of nice quotes from Amoruso and others that I will gladly take with me--but I'm just not sure if I would readily recommend it to others. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book that was all at once aspirational and inspirational. I especially loved Sara Jess Austell's voice--it was perfect narrating a book like this one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5great book highly recommended
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I only finished this because I’m not a quitter. But I learned absolutely nothing. Great title and great confidence, but please turn to other books for real business guidance or self-help. This is more blog material than book material.
