      What a complex story, of the constant struggle between good and evil in our troubled world! Well done!!!

      Remains of Innocence is an interesting book that took seemingly two different plots with two different story lines and united them. In the story there were many good and kind people who help abused women to find a new life. It is nice to know that such kindness exists. The book was given a solid four star rating in this review. It is highly recommended.

      Synopsis: A young woman, who is estranged from her mother, finds thousands of dollars in the house after her mother dies. This sets in motion a series of murders aimed at the family and going back to the actions of her father. A disabled man is found in a 'glory hole' along with some mutilated animals. In this case, the question is did he harm the animals or was he a victim, as well.Review: This is totally absorbing on both fronts. Although the stories are not interwoven, you don't know that until fairly close to the end of the book.

      Jance tells two stories that intersect with Sheriff Joanna Brady, as she investigates two homicides that happen back-to-back but are unrelated. Liza, a waitress in Great Barrington Massachusetts who has overcome an extremely dysfunctional upbringing, discovers $140,000 in bills when cleaning up her deceased mother's hovel. When she realizes she is in danger, she fleas to Arizona where her brother, her only remaining relative, is a medical examiner. She leaves a wake of murders behind her. Meanwhile, Brady is trying to get to the bottom of two murders that are particularly disturbing and seem unrelated. As usual, the outcome is a satisfying resolution.

      This is my first read of a J A Jance work. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is action driven with two plots containing serial murder, animal mutilation, arson, mob money, nudists, the witness protection program, dis-functional families, and a female sheriff who proves to be "Wonder Woman" in a job and family balancing act. My thanks to the author and Goodreads for a complimentary copy of the book.

      Two mysteries intertwine in this strong entry in the Joanna Brady series - one with its roots in Great Barrington, MA and one in Brisbee, Arizona, the setting for the series. Joanna investigates and discovers what connects them...a lot of dysfunctional families are involved.

      If you are a JA Jance fan you will enjoy this story that starts as two distinct stories, one taking place in Massachusetts and one in Arizona where Joanna Brady does her diligent work as sheriff. J A Jance novels are comfortable reading for me. I turn to them when I need some relaxing (if murder can be relaxing) reading. I look forward to her next book.

      Remains of Innocence by J.A. Jance is latest in the Sheriff Joanna Brady mystery series. From the beginning I have liked the entire concept of a woman taking over in her husband's stead when he is killed in the line of duty. She has always embraced the challenges, got herself educated and does a great job for the citizens of Cochise county. The writer's characters are so believable and her story lines are always fast-paced. This story will also keep you guessing till almost the very end as to who the real bad guy is. With 16 books in the series her fans have a great selection of books and will enjoy reading how her characters evolve, move through life's changes and come out stronger in the end.

      Really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. Lisa Matchett is cleaning out her mother's house after her death and discovers money hidden in books all round the cluttered house. She uses the money to fix up the house and then tragedy hits by someone burning down the house, a break-in at her apartment and ransacked and more deaths. She heads out of town via a battered wife underground railroad system that uses long haul truckers heading to her brother Guy Matchett in Arizona. Meanwhile in Arizona, Sheriff Joanna Brady is investigating the murder of a mentally handicapped man and is trying to get in touch with her medical examiner, Guy Matchett, who as it turns out as been tortured and murdered.

      Liza Machett cleans out her mother’s home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts when she finds money hidden everywhere. All she remembers that they were poor growing up. Soon, the house is burned to the ground, her landlord is murdered and she is on the run to her brother is Bisbee, Arizona. But in Bisbee, the Sheriff, Joanna Brady is dealing with the death of a local who was found at the bottom of a hole. When Liza reaches Bisbee, Joanna hands her hands filled with more than the Sheriff’s department can handle. This story is riveting filled with enough suspense to keep me guessing. And situations that move quickly and efficiently that I didn’t want to put the book down. I though the characters were well developed and the mystery of the money satisfactory. It is an enjoyable summer read.

      There's nothing quite like reading one of Jance's Joanna Brady books while staying in Bisbee, Arizona. All I had to do is step outside the door to see I was right in the heart of these books. Having grown up in this old mining town, Jance's setting is pitch perfect and one of the reasons why I love these books.Another reason I love these books is the characters. Joanna is brave, intelligent, and compassionate, and these books have shown her growth from grieving widow to sheriff to sheriff at the beginning of a second marriage. Joanna can also be opinionated and stubborn, and her relationship with her mother is anything but harmonious. In other words, she's human.The people Joanna lives with and works with have become like friends as I've made my way through this series. When Junior was diagnosed with dementia in an earlier book, I got tears in my eyes. Yes indeed, I am invested all the way to my eyebrows in this series.A perfect setting and characters that wind themselves around your heart are all well and good, but they need a good mystery to show them in their best light. In the case of Remains of Innocence, one mystery is stronger than the other. It didn't take me long to deduce what had really happened to Junior, but Liza's part of the book kept my interest from beginning to end. Jance has a way of knowing just how to make a character so sympathetic that you want to invite them in for coffee and a long talk. She's done her usual excellent job with Liza and those $100 bills.Innocence is a theme that runs strong throughout this book. People who never lost their innocence; those who lost it much too early. People who should be innocent who aren't; and those who look guilty... but aren't. There's good food for thought in Jance's latest Joanna Brady mystery-- yet another reason why I love this series.

      Although there are quite a few Joanna Brady mysteries, this was my first. I never thought I was missing anything so I can say that this is a good stand-alone book.There were two stories going on at the same time that later merge into one. The storyline were never confusing, although there were quite a few characters, and I sometimes had trouble remembering who they were. I liked most of the characters and the very normal family life Joanna has with her husband and children. The story takes a few odd twists and turns and the Liza’s story isn’t very believable, but I am quite able to overlook the wild adventure and just enjoy the story. I normally do not like long prologues or intros, but in this case the prologue gave a good background to one of the main characters. I enjoyed Remains of Innocence very much and I look forward to picking up some more of the Joanna Brady series.I received this book from the Partners in Crime blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

      You start a Jance book and before you notice; you are well into it. A very good story teller who has created a continuing cast of interesting characters. An Underground Railroad, using long haul truckers, for battered women? Do it exist? One would hope so. Two apperently disparate stories come together for a very satisfactory conclusion

      Liza Machett walked away from her mentally ill and verbally abusive mother the day after her high school graduation and never looked back. Ten years later her mother enters hospice and she’s requested to go into the house to retrieve a cookbook. The house is a nightmare of highly stacked garbage and vermin—and a heck of a lot of moldy money stuffed in books; Liza had grown up dirt poor, even having to use an outhouse, so where did it come from? Spending that money to fix up the house so it can be sold brings unwanted attention, and she’s not safe. She decides to find her successful older half brother that bailed out of their lives years before she left, hoping between them they can figure out what to do.At the other end of the country, Sheriff Joanna Brady really has her hands full this time, beginning with an early morning call to find Junior, a mentally challenged man of about 60 who went missing from his bedroom overnight, which evolves into an unrelated crime. Her department works with the Bisbee PD in trying to solve a number of things that come to light.This story is jam-packed with things going on and various avenues to investigate with some surprising results. The story is told from 2 points of view. Obviously we have Joanna, but a good chunk of the story follows Liza, what she faces and learns, as well as her interesting escape across country to reach her brother. Outside of the genre I normally spend money on, I’ve only read one other book by this author years ago, and jumped at the chance to get an ARC via Edelweiss/Above the Treeline. I’m going to have to go back and pick up other books in this series. The fast-paced mystery is tightly written and easily kept me absorbed. The characters and situations are interesting, as is the area and terrain, although at times the number of characters felt overwhelming to me. I don’t believe that would have been the case if I’d already been familiar with them from prior books. But it didn’t stop me from enjoying this story.
