James Maxwell

James Maxwell grew up in the scenic Bay of Islands, New Zealand, and was educated in Australia. Devouring fantasy and science-fiction classics from an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at the age of eleven. Inspired by the natural beauty around him but also by a strong interest in history, he decided in his twenties to see the world. He relocated to London and then to Thailand, Mexico, Austria, and Malta, developing a lifelong obsession with travel. It was while living in Thailand that he seriously took up writing again, producing his first full-length novel, Enchantress, the first of four titles in his internationally bestselling Evermen Saga. Iron Will is the fourth and final novel in his latest series, The Shifting Tides. When he isn’t writing or traveling, James enjoys sailing, snowboarding, classical guitar, and French cooking.

A great beginning to a series that starts out with so much to try to understand, but by the end of the book it nearly wraps most of it together. The rest left to be foretold in the next book.

A true epic fantasy, with the length to match. Love the complexity of the world building. Just wish the character development had been as thorough. Otherwise very enjoyable read.

I choose this because of Simon Vance and eagerly listened hour after hour. I am elated there is more story awaiting me.

Loved it. It was very well written and the narrator took it to another level. The story was intense and there is a lot of fighting with some graphic descriptions at times. I would give this audiobook a try if you are thinking about it.

Great story but very obviously written by a male author - and one who ascribes to traditional fantasy world creation. If you’re after something refreshing and new then probably best look elsewhere.
If you’re after typical patriarchal societies where women are more property than person, and only men are warriors, gods, teachers and authority figures then go for it. Sure there are a couple of exceptions (including protagonists) but they’re made out to be different to the norm.
Anyone else sick of ‘not like other women’ stories?

I was surprised to see so many low-star reviews on here, complaining about amateurish writing and copying Rothfuss, among other things. I don't agree. I've read a lot of fantasy books, The Name of the Wind among them, and this book isn't a poor copy. I like the characters, too, even if Miro is some sort of super hero. He still has his weaknesses, as does his sister Ella. I can't wait to read the sequel.

    Enjoyable read

Great characters, interesting magical use, good versus evil - what more could you want in a fantasy book? Kept me reading.

4.6 starsThis is the first book in what looks like it'll be a wonderful fantasy series. I love that it is an actual series rather than a trilogy or stand alone (which are good too, but I just love a series I can really sink my teeth into). This book does take a little while to get going, but I still enjoyed that part. The characters are all well developed and interesting. It is mostly told from the perspective of 2 characters, but there are a few other perspectives thrown in, all interesting and relevant. The magic system featured in this series is believable and is also one of my favorite magic systems in any series. It works in a very interesting way. I liked other aspects of the world building as well. And there weren't any real infodumps that I can recall! I loved seeing a bad guy that had good intentions. Very refreshing. Overall a very solid start to a traditional fantasy series.
